Just before going to “Why Dronacharya asked Ekalavya (Eklavya) for his thumb | Why Dronacharya refused to teach Ekalavya (Eklavya) | Why Krishna killed Ekalavya“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

We should always remember that, our Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) has always given right reasons for everything.

Be it doing pooja, doing shraddha (श्राद्ध / śrād’dha), what to eat, what to wear, where to go & not to go, what to talk & not to talk, who should be our friend, who is our enemy, etc.

Now, let us know one such very good example from Mahabharata and Srimad Bhagavatam about the story of Ekalavya (Eklavya) and Dronacharya.

Why Dronacharya asked Ekalavya (Eklavya) for his thumb | Why Dronacharya refused to teach Ekalavya (Eklavya) | Why Lord Krishna killed Ekalavya (Eklavya)

We all know that Ekalavya (Eklavya) had made the clay statue of the Guru Dronacharya.

And we also know that, he was practicing the Dhanur Vidya (archery) and was also had become master in some of the Dhanur Vidyas (archeries).

After some time, Dronacharya comes to know about the Ekalavya (Eklavya) practicing Dhanur Vidya by keeping a statue of himself.

Once Dronacharya meets Ekalavya (Eklavya) and asks him “why are you practicing Dhanur Vidya (archery) by keeping my statue in front“.

For this Ekalavya (Eklavya) replies that, “Guru Deva, I have accepted you as my Guru and I have been practicing Dhanur Vidya (archery) since then“.

Later Dronacharya after few days again meet Ekalavya (Eklavya) and asks him right hand’s Thumb finger as the Guru dakshina.

Ekalavya (Eklavya) without any hesitation cuts off his finger to give his Thumb as the Guru dakshina to his Guru Dronacharya.

We should think why Guru Dronacharya asks for the thumb (finger) of Ekalavya (Eklavya)?

Was Guru Dronacharya too jealous of Ekalavya (Eklavya) that –

one day Ekalavya (Eklavya) will become a much better Dhanur Vidyashali (better archer) than the Nara Shreshtta (one of the best among humans) Arjuna.

Why Dronacharya asked Ekalavya (Eklavya) for his thumb?

Why Dronacharya refused to teach Eklavya”

Why Krishna killed Ekalavya (Eklavya)?

There are multiple reasons for this as given below:

(Let us know this reason and also some of the other reasons too.)

Ekalavya (Eklavya) was a close friend of Jarasandha

Ekalavya (Eklavya) a terror to Pandavas and Yadavas

Reason for asking thumb

Ekalavya (Eklavya) and Lord Krishna cousin brothers

Ekalavya (Eklavya) father Vyatraja Hiranyadhanus friend & supporter of Jarasandha

Jarasandha biggest enemy of Yadavas and Kurus

Ekalavya (Eklavya) father’s brother was Vasudeva (वसुदेव)

Ekalavya (Eklavya) father never like Vasudeva (वसुदेव) and his family

Main reason for asking thumb

Ekalavya (Eklavya) was a messenger of Jarasandha

Rukmi wanted Rukmini Devi to married to Shishipala

Reason is Ekalavya (Eklavya) was an enemy of Lord Krishna

Ekalavya (Eklavya) was a wall in between Lord Krishna and Sri Rukmini Devi

Now, let us know more information about “Why Dronacharya asked Eklavya for his thumb” | “Why Dronacharya refused to teach Eklavya” as given below:

1. Ekalavya (Eklavya) friend of Jarasandha : Ekalavya (Eklavya) and his family were friends and supporters of Jarasandha, the arch rival of Yavada clan, that is –

Jarasandha was one of the biggest enemy of Bhagavan Sri Krishna Paramatma.

2. Ekalavya (Eklavya) a terror : And Guru Dronacharya knows that, in the future if Ekalavya (Eklavya) learns the mastery of archery,

then he may be a terror to Hastinapura, whose people were the worshippers of the Bhagavan Sri Krishna Paramatma.

3. Reason for asking thumb : This is the reason that Guru Dronacharya instead of harming or killing, asks Ekalavya (Eklavya) only his Thumb as the Guru dakshina.

4. Ekalavya (Eklavya) and Lord Krishna cousin brothers : Also we should note that Ekalavya (Eklavya) and Bhagavan Sri Krishna Paramatma are the cousin brothers.

5. Ekalavya (Eklavya) father Vyatraja Hiranyadhanus friend & supporter of Jarasandha :

Ekalavya (Eklavya) was the tribal prince of the place called Magadha

And the leader of that tribe was the father of the Ekalavya (Eklavya) called Vyatraja Hiranyadhanus.

This Vyatraja Hinranyadhanus was a huge supporter of Jarasandha.

6. Jarasandha biggest enemy of Yadavas and Kurus :

Jarasandha was the biggest enemy of the Yadava and Kuru vamshas / families.

7. Ekalavya (Eklavya) father brother of Vasudeva :

Hiranyadhanus was the brother of the Vasudeva, the father of Bhagavan Sri Krishna Paramatma.

8. Ekalavya (Eklavya) father never like Vasudeva and his family :

Hiranyadhanus never liked Vasudeva (father of Bhagavan Sri Krishna Paramatma) and his vamsha / family.

9. Main reason for asking thumb : This was the reason that, Guru Dronacharya asked for the thumb of the Ekalavya (Eklavya),

so that, Ekalavya (Eklavya) would not be able to harm either Yadava vamsha / family or the Kuru vamsha / family.

10. Ekalavya (Eklavya) messenger of Jarasandha : After many years, Ekalavya (Eklavya) had become full supporter of the Jarasandha

and was a messenger in the court of Magadha, where Jarasandha was the King.

11. Rukmi wanted Rukmini Devi to married to Shishipala :

Both Bhishmakha (father of Maata Sri Rukmini Devi) and Rukmi (brother of Maata Sri Rukmini Devi) wanted Maata Sri Rukmini Devi to get married to Shishupala.

(Shishupala was the son of Damaghosha, king of Chedi, by Srutadevi, sister of Vasudeva.)

12. Reason is Ekalavya (Eklavya) was an enemy of Lord Krishna :

Therefore he was not only cousin of Krishna, but also Krishna’s implacable foe.

13. Ekalavya (Eklavya) wall in between Lord Krishna and Sri Rukmini Devi :

When Bhagavan Sri Krishna Paramatma kidnaps Maata Sri Rukmini Devi.

(Remember, this happens with the acceptance of Maata Sri Rukmini Devi and this is in accordance to Dharma also.)

Ekalavya (Eklavya) comes in front of Bhagavan Sri Krishna and becomes a wall in between Bhagavan Sri Krishna and Maata Sri Rukmini Devi

and asks Bhagavan Sri Krishna Paramatma to fight with him.

Because of this Bhagavan Sri Krishna Paramatma hurdled a rock on the Ekalavya (Eklavya) and kills him.

PS: Here Ekalavya (Eklavya) should not be taken into consideration as a mere human.

But as same as Jarasandha, means as Rakshasa and Bhagavan Sri Krishna Paramatma’s main purpose of the avatar on this earth was to destroy all the Rakshasas.

And also to make Bhoomaata (mother earth) free from the Rakkasas (Demons).

There shouldn’t be any sympathy for the Ekalavya (Eklavya), as he and his father were the enemies of the Yadava and Kuru vamshas / families.

Please always remember, anyone who is against Dharma has to face the same consequences.

Whether it was Ravana, Duryodhana, Kamsa, Hiranyakashipu, Shishupala, etc. or even Ekalavya (Eklavya), all have to face the repercussion.

More information will be added to this on regular, please visit after some time to know more information.

The story is a method adopted by people who were well off during mahabharata to maintain the status quo by cunningly using the concept of dharma. It has 2 effects 1. it reinforces belief in dharma of upper varnas 2. it discourages other varna people from embarking achievements which was restricted to them by dharma. For more info refer http://www.caste-india.com/art-of-caste-hijacking- conversion-of-lower-caste-icons-and-symbols-into-higher-varna/

  • VisH

The article is trying to justify killing of eklavya. Drona believed in chaturvarna hence he asked for his thumb. If eklavya was a rakshas as article says he would have never given his thumb as guru dakshina to guru who never considered him disciple. He would have killed him instead. Please do not try to instil your broken derivation of mahabharat to others.

Yadhava community should be protected ? great! caste-sim should always exists. Good do Brahmins mingle with Yadhava community by marriying girl or boy ? Great ! Also when Lord, who is sarva sakthiman Sri Krishna, can change a hunter into a epic writer as Valmigi, why couldn't he change Ekalavya as a saint or good hearted man ? Is God wekk in this matter ? So killing is the great solution for all these things ? Good Hindu path ? Yadhava was cursed by Dhurvasa Rishi and the entire community was destroyed because of liquor.. So, Is it a bad thing by Dhurvasa.. ? Why Sarva sakthiman bhagwan couldn't change the mind of Karna? ok ok, Let the upper caste flourish at the cost of downtrodden's life. ? Above all Sri Ramanuja must be killed as he wanted to uplift downtrodden. Long live Sanathan Dharma !

Yes u r right. God can change Ekalavya , Duryodana, and also Karna. But then what is the purpose of their existence, god creates people they by their wisdom go in a right path if they are going in a wrong way god creates situations to change them even though when they didn;t get realised they experience their karma. Now they remained as an example for us to know how we will get destructed when we have evil / impure thoughts and actions. (if god can do anything he can also stop global warming that is happening today even when we destroy the nature, deplete its resources and pollute it . but it is not correct because we should realise our actions and change our selves).
      2. Warring is not just about shooting an arrow accurately. It is about strategy & control of mind/emotions. This is the reason why Arjuna was provided the teachings of Bhagvad Gita on the battlefield. Also, Drona and Bhishma provided a lot more Dharma teachings to Arjuna and others, to make sure they use their powers the right way.

Think of the greatest generals in history. Were they the sharpest shooters or strongest warriors they have in their armies? Not necessarily. What matters is the ability to lead their men to victory.

Eklavya was an unknown quantity. While Drona greatly appreciated his learning skills, having such a person is also dangerous without knowing his motives, mental composition and loyalty. Think of your comfort levels when you see a random kid on the street getting supersmart with an AK-47. While you might appreciate his skillset, you might also be leery of where his motivations/ambitions lie.

It is plainly unfortunate that on Mahabharata turned it into a mere caste issue. Drona had to make a spot judgment on whether Eklavya was a risk to the society or not.

we call somebody lord because of his/her karma. in shri krishna's case it is bhagvat geeta. he was polotician too.

  • Unknown

sorry to say but shri Krishna played with every one, sure eklavya was great archeror than arjuna & karna, who had support & training of Krishna & parshurama, same thing was done with Veer Barbarik.

  • Unknown

even i said krishna and arjuna both are colpits more than karna beeshma dhrona he killed for own causes not for dharma. we all know about kandava dahanam. who did it for what reason. lord krishna and arjuna dhan the kandava vanam. in that many small creatures and trees were killed for no purpose except his enjoyment.

  • Unknown

Originally born to Vasudeva's brother Devashrava (which by the way makes him Krishna's cousin!), Ekalavya got lost in the forest and was subsequently brought up by the Nishada king Hiranyadhanu. He was killed by Krishna during Rukmini's abduction. However, to honour the great sacrifice Ekalavya made as guru dakshina, Krishna blessed him so that he can reincarnate and take revenge on Drona. Hence, Ekalavya was reincarnated as Draupadi's twin Dhrishtadyumna.

  • Unknown

But Sri krishna give a boon to Ekalavya by seeing his courage to reborn as a warrior that's why he as a drustadamya and he killed Dronacharya in the war

What’s the source of this story? Don’t say imaginary stories Prodice your proof from scriptures else don’t write anything

    • It’s nothing imaginary.
Bhagavan Sri Krishna and it’s different avatars are mainly because of three reasons:
      1. To free this earth from the Adharmis, and
      2. To save the Dharma followers.
      3. To re-establish the Dharma.
In Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavan Sri Krishna very clearly says that:
      परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम् |
      धर्म-संस्थापनार्थाय संभवामि युगे युगे || 4.8 ||
What more proof do you need?
Ekalavya and his family were adharmis. We should come out of the TV serials and movies stories.
We need to understand the reality.

I think some in the above comments never ever read the actual Mahabharata text, they just uttering pure opinion based on what they read online or the TV serials they watch. We seem to forget the author of the Mahabharat Rishi Vedavyasa, his mother Satyavati was a fisherman King daughter who was also the ancestor of the Pandavas and Kuruavas.

Secondly, Guru Drona promise Arjun he will be the best archer in the world so asking for Eklayva thumb was not based on caste but because he want to keep his word to Arjuna.

Thirdly, Ekalavya death at Shri Krishna hands was a blessing cause it’s known those who die at the Lord hands obtain his abode or moksha.

Fouthly, God is a witness of our karma, he does not interfere in our actions cause he give us free will. If he did, he become a part doer of our actions and the whole law of karma will apply to him which is imbalanced the whole of creation. He can guide you but it’s up to you to make a choice. That’s why in the Gita he said whenever he incarnate, prakriti or nature is under his control meaning he is not subjective to karma nor time. He does actions yes, but his actions is selfless cause it’s for the welfare of the universe.

    • Namaste,
      Dhanyavad for your comments.
As said above Bhagavan Sri Krishna (Vishnu) takes avatar for mainly three reasons:
      1. To slay down the Adharmis.
      2. To save all who follow Dharma.
      3. To re-establish the Dharma.
      Keep in touch.
      Shubhamastu!
