Just before going to “How and why Balarama killed Rukmi (in dice game)“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

Aniruddha’s parents were Pradyumna (Sri Krishna and Rukmini Devi son) and Rukmavati (she was the daughter of Rukmi).

On the occasion of the marriage of the Aniruddha (Krishna’s grand son and Pradyumna’s son) and Rochana (Rukmi’s grand daughter),

Lord Sri Krishna Paramatma and Balarama along with many Yadavas arrived at the kingdom of Bhojataka (Rukmi’s Kingdom).

During this time, some of the rajas (kings) who were friends of the Rukmi gave ill-advise to Rukmi to invite Balarama to play a game of dice.

Balarama was addicted in playing the game of dice, instead he himself not being good at that game.

All the rajas (kings) wanted to defeat Balarama and wanted to humiliate him.

For this, even Rukmi agreed and invited Balarama for the game of dice.

Rukmi and Balarama started to play the game of dice. The first game was for the four thousand gold.

In the first game itself, Balarama lost.

Again the second game was played. In this also, Balarama lost lots of gold.

Similarly in the third game also, Balarama lost lots of gold.

After this lose, the king of Kalinga and Rukmi started to make fun of Balarama and they both laughed at Balarama in the humiliating way.

On this Balarama felt insulted and he got lot of anger.

In the next game Balarama placed four crores of gold as the bet.

In this game Rukmi threw the dice and finally Balarama won.

Balarama got lot of excited and said, “I have won, I have won”.

But Rukmi said that you have not won the game, since I have not yet agreed on this game.

But an akashavani (words from the sky) came from the sky and said that:

“this game was eventually won by Balarama, since Rukmi had threw the dice, even though he may have not agreed upon the game.”

“Since he threw the dice, this means mentally Rukmi has agreed upon the game”.

On hearing this Balarama killed Rukmi.

Also Balarama broke the teeth of king of Kalinga using the gadam (club), since using those teeth he had laughed at Balarama.

Balarama also killed many of the kings who were present there and who were also the friends of the Rukmi.

While all this was happening Lord Sri Krishna Paramatma didn’t uttered a single word.

He knows if he would had talked favoring Rukmi, then his brother would had not been happy.

While on the other hand if Sri Krishna had supported Balarama,

then Rukmini would had felt really bad as her brother was killed on the occasion of the marriage of their grandson Aniruddha with Rochana.

PS 1: The game of gambling is always bad and results in the worst of the situations.

We know the game of dice between Pandavas and Kauravas also, and the result of that game was also very-very bad.

Gambling shouldn’t be done in any situation.

Also getting marriage in blood relationship is incorrect according to our Vedas, puranas and sanskriti.

Here the marriage is being arranged by Sri Krishna only because, Rukmi was wanting to do some favour to his sister Rukmini.

Otherwise in the present Yuga (Kali Yuga), the marriage within blood relationship is strictly prohibited, since the children born may not be in healthy condition.

Also we need to understand that the avatars of Sri Krishna and Balarama has been taken on this bhoomandalam (earth) for this below reason:

To wipe up all the ill minded people and rakshasas and thus they did the same thing here also”.

PS 2: You can also read these two stories, for better understanding.
