Just before going to know about “What is Pururava and Urvashi (marriage) story (full and correct)“, let’s know few basic information about Pururava and Urvashi Devi.

In Sanskrit and originally Pururava is called as Pururavas (पुरूरवस्) (purūravas).

Pururava (son of Budha, the Mercury planet and Ila) was a very strong king who ruled the earth very well.

Pururava performed one hundred divine ‘Ashvamedha‘ yajnas.

The three goals of human life are ‘Dharma‘ (righteousness), ‘Artha‘ (wealth) and ‘Kama‘ (that which is desired).

[Usually, a fourth goal is called as ‘moksha‘ (Salvation – A permanent place in Vaikuntha) is added.]

These three goals (Dharma, Artha and Kama) wished to see which of them Pururava (Pururavas) revered the most. They therefore adopted human forms and came to visit Pururava.

Pururava treated Dharma, Artha and Kama with utmost respect and gave them golden seats to sit on.

Pururava offered Dharma, Artha and Kama all sorts of offerings. But in the process, Dharma received more of the offerings than Artha and Kama.

This angered both Artha and Kama.

“You will be destroyed,” Artha cursed Pururava. “You will go mad over Urvashi,” Kama cursed Pururava.

But Dharma blessed Pururava like this: “You will live for long and you will never deviate from the righteous path,” he said. “Your descendants will rule for ever.”

Having thus cursed and blessed Pururava, Dharma, Artha and Kama disappeared.

On one particular occasion, Pururava was driving his chariot through a forest. He suddenly found that a demon named Keshi was abducting an ‘Apsara‘ (Dancer of heaven).

This Apsara was none other then the divine Urvashi. Pururava defeated the demon and rescued the divine Urvashi.

Pururava (Pururavas) restored Urvashi to Lord Sri Indra Deva, the king of the Devatas (Demigods).

Lord Sri Indra Deva was delighted at this act and Lord Sri Indra Deva and Pururava became very close friends.

The Sage Rishi Bharata taught mankind how to sing and dance.

(Note : This Sage Rishi Bharata is different from the Bharata Chakravarti of Kuru family and Lord Sri Rama’s brother Bharata.)

To celebrate Urvashi’s return, Lord Sri Indra Deva asked Sage Rishi Bharata to stage a performance.

As artistes, Sage Rishi Bharata chose three Apsaras. They were Menaka, Urvashi and Rambha.

Menaka and Rambha danced as they should. But Urvashi was attracted by King Pururava and kept looking at him. The result was that the divine Urvashi fell out of her step.

This angered Sage Rishi Bharata and he cursed the divine Urvashi that she would have to spend fifty-five years on earth.

Thus on earth, divine Urvashi married Pururava and stayed with Pururava (Pururavas).

Both Pururava and Urvashi Devi had eight sons namely:

Ayu, Dridayau, Ashvayu, Dhanayu, Dhritamana, Vasu, Shuchividya and Shatayu.

Birth story of Urvashi is as given below:

Urvashi’s birth is narrated in Srimad Bhagavatam (Sri Vishnu Purana).

In the legend as given in Srimad Bhagavatam (Sri Vishnu Purana), the divine brothers Nara and Narayana were performing penance to please the creator Lord Sri Brahma Deva.

(Here we should note that, Nara is Lord Sri Adishesha Naga and Narayana is Lord Sri Narayana / Vishnu.)

(Lord Sri Narayana was performing this penance for ‘loka vidambana‘, that is, to teach people the lessons on how to do penance to please Lord Sri Brahma Deva.)

But this made Lord Sri Indra Deva (the king of all the Devatas / Demigods) feel insecure about his position and throne.

And Lord Sri Indra Deva does not want the sages Nara and Narayana to gain the divine powers from Lord Sri Brahma Deva.

Thus, Lord Sri Indra Deva created several illusions to shatter the penance performed by both Nara and Narayana.

But who can stop Lord Sri Narayana (Vishnu). Thus, all of his ploys of Lord Sri Indra Deva failed completely.

Then, finally Lord Sri Indra Deva orders his Apsaras like Rambha, Menaka and Tilottama to go to Nara and Narayana and divert them through seduction.

All the three, that is, Rambha, Menaka and Tilottama accompanied by Lord Sri Kama Deva and Goddess Sri Rati Devi went to Nara and Narayana.

And all of the above stated Devatas (Demigods) started to dance in several seducing ways in front of Nara and Narayana.

But who can seduce the Supreme and Ultimate Lord Sri Narayana (Vishnu).

Both the sages Nara and Narayana remained totally unaffected by these acts of these Apsaras, Sri Kama Deva and Goddess Sri Rati Devi.

And finally both Nara and Narayana decided to break the pride of the Apsaras, Sri Kama Deva and Goddess Sri Rati Devi.

Lord Sri Narayana (Vishnu) taps his own thigh (In Sanskrit thigh means ‘Uru’ – उरु).

From Lord Sri Narayana’s (Vishnu) thigh (Uru) the divine Urvashi Devi emerges, that is, she took birth as the daughter of Lord Sri Narayana (Vishnu).

[Note : Here Urvashi = Uru + Vashi = Thigh + Born from = Urvashi is someone, who is born from the Uru (thigh) of Lord Sri Narayana (Vishnu).]

Urvashi Devi’s beauty leaves all the Apsaras matchless and they completely become ashamed of their evil act.

Both, Nara and Narayana ensured to Lord Sri Indra Deva that they wouldn’t take his throne away from him and they also gifted Urvashi Devi to Lord Sri Indra Deva.

Urvashi Devi occupied the place of pride in Lord Sri Indra Deva’s court, that is, in ‘Svarga Loka‘.

[NOTE : We should always remember that, these Apsara strees (divine ladies) are not ordinary people. They are Devis of the higher planets.]

[These Apsara strees (divine ladies) are not there to seduce anyone, but in fact to break pride of the ill-minded demons, these Apasara strees work on.]

[In Hinduism there are over fifty million Apsara strees (Celestial maidens). In these, the most dignified and most beautiful is Sri Urvashi Devi.]

[The divine Apsara strees like Menaka is the mother of Chandravansh ( Chandravanshi) (Chandravamsha) (Lunar Dynasty).]

[Many of us know that, the great and divine Brahmarishi Sri Vishwamitra married this Menaka Devi.]

[This divine Brahmarishi Sri Vishwamitra and Menaka Devi’s son is Bharata (Bharat) Chakravarti of the Kuru dynasty.]

[Many of these Apsara strees were born as Gopikas during the Mahabharata period. All these Gopikas were great devotees of Lord Sri Krishna.]

[Please think 1000 times before talking and thinking any ill about these divine Apsara strees.]

Birth and early life of Pururava (Pururavas) information is as given below:

Pururava (Pururavas) was born as the son of Budha (Mercury planet) (father) and Ila (mother).

Budha (Mercury planet) was the son of Lord Sri Chandra Deva (Moon God) and thus Pururava (Pururavas) becomes the first Chandravanshi (Chandravamsha) (Lunar Dynasty) King on Earth.

Since Pururava (Pururavas) was born on a mountain called as ‘Mount Puru‘, and thus he is known as Pururavas.

Information about the reign of Pururava (Pururavas) is as given below:

As per the Puranas, Pururava (Pururavas) reigned from a place called as ‘Pratisthana‘ (प्रतिस्थान) (pratisthāna).

This place called Pratisthana is nothing but today’s Prayagraj.

Earlier this place is also called as Prayaga (Prayag). Here Prayaga means the confluence point (sangama) of three rivers, that is, Ganga, Yamuna and Sarasvati.

Pururava (Pururavas) performed a tapasya (penance) to please Lord Sri Brahma Deva. Thus as a reward, Lord Sri Brahma Deva made Pururavas the sovereign of the whole earth.

Pururavas successfully had completed a hundred Ashwamedha Yajnas. The asuras (demons) had become Pururavas followers, and similarly the Devatas (Demigods) had become Pururavas friends.
