Just before moving towards to know about “What is Lord Krishna, Upamanyu (milk), Lord Shiva story“, let us know few basic information.

The Rishi (Sage) Vyaghrapada had a son named Upamanyu. When Upamanyu was very young, he wanted some milk from his mother.

But Upamanyu was not at all happy with the milk that his mother gave him. Upamanyu complained that it did not taste like milk at all.

Let us know what Upamanyu mother gave instead of milk to Upamanyu.

“Naturally”, said his mother. “I did not give you milk. How can we afford milk? We are not rich.”

“I powdered some rice and mixed it with water.” Upamanyu’s mother continued, “That is what I gave to you as milk.”

“Unfortunately, you have tasted milk in your uncle’s house and you could make out what the difference is.”

Upamanyu’s mother began to cry as she was not able to provide milk to her Upamanyu.

But Upamanyu consoled his mother. “Don’t cry mother, please”, he said. “I will pray to Lord Shiva and get milk for myself.”

Upamanyu’s mother taught him the mantra that was to be used for praying to Lord Shiva.

Mother also taught Upamnayu another mantra which would summon up a terrible divine weapon named aghorastra (अघोरास्त्र) (aghōrāstra).

This was just in case there was any danger. Upamanyu went to the Himalayas and started to meditate.

Upamanyu lived only on air and chanted the incantation that his mother had taught him.

Upamanyu prayed in front of an earthen Linga.

Demons came to disturb his meditation, but Upamanyu paid no attention to them.

Lord Shiva himself was impressed by Upamanyu’s difficult tapasya. But he thought that he would test Upamanyu first.

Lord Shiva arrived in front of Upamanyu in the disguise of Lord Sri Indra Deva and asked, “Upamanyu, what are you doing?”

Upamanyu said, “I am blessed that the king of the Devatas (Demigods) has arrived before me”, replied Upamanyu.

Upamanyu continued, “But I am praying to Lord Shiva.”

“Shiva! Why pray to that useless fellow?” asked Lord Shiva (In disguise of Lord Sri Indra Deva). Upamanyu could not stand this insult to Lord Shiva.

Upamanyu summoned up aghorastra (अघोरास्त्र) (aghōrāstra) by means of the mantra and let it loose at the person he thought was Lord Sri Indra Deva.

Lord Shiva then manifested himself in his own form and aghorastra (अघोरास्त्र) (aghōrāstra) was repelled by Nandi, who had also turned up.

Lord Shiva himself taught Upamanyu all sorts of sacred knowledge, and arrangements were made.

This was done, so that Upamanyu need never suffer from a lack of milk.

Lord Sri Krishna and Upamanyu story is as given below:

Lord Sri Krishna once came to meet the Rishi (Sage) Upamanyu (this happened after several years of the above story), many years after the milk incident.

Upamanyu taught Lord Sri Krishna the words of wisdom that he learned from Lord Shiva.

Upamanyu also taught Lord Sri Krishna how to pray to Lord Shiva.

It was by praying to Lord Shiva that Lord Sri Krishna obtained his son Samba from his consort Sri Jambavati Devi.

For sixteen months Lord Sri Krishna had to pray before Lord Shiva appeared, to grant the boon regarding the son.

Goddess Sri Parvati Devi also granted Lord Sri Krishna several boons.

PS: Here few points to be noted are:

Lord Sri Krishna is svayam Bhagavan (directly the Supreme Lord).

There is no need for Lord Sri Krishna to ask / pray to anyone about anything.

But the parama karunaalu (the most kindest) Lord Sri Krishna is teaching us this –

how to pray / meditate when someone requires something from the Lord Shiva and other Devatas / Demigods.
