Just before going to “Shrimad Bhagwat Saptah information (facts) (significance) (importance)“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

Here, Saptah = sapta + h = seven days + His (Lord Sri Krishna). Here sapta means seven days and His means Lord Sri Krishna.

Srimad Bhagavatam and Srimad Bhagavata Purana both are one and the same, with two different synonym names.

Srimad Bhagwat Saptah is also called as “Saptah”, “Srimad Bhagavatam Saptah”, “Bhagwat Saptah”, “Bhagavatam Saptah”, “Bagavata Saptaha”, etc.

On all these seven days, we need to do shravana (श्रवण / ಶ್ರವಣ / śravaṇa and not श्रावण / ಶ್ರಾವಣ / śrāvaṇa) (Have to hear) about the great Srimad Bhagavatam (Srimad Bhagavata Purana) from a divine Vaishnava Guru about Lord Sri Krishna.

Srimad Bhagwat (Bhagavatam) Saptah means, hearing about Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna as given in Srimad Bhagavatam.

Srimad means = highly respectable and Bhagavatam = Sri Vishnu Purana as written by Sri Veva Vyasa Ji (He is an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu).

Just like Parikshita (Parikshit) Maharaja did the shravana (heard) about the Srimad Bhagavatam (Srimad Bhagavata Purana) from the divine Rishi Shukacharya Ji (Shuka Muni),

we also need to do shravana (hear) with true bhakti (devotion) about Lord Sri Krishna through Srimad Bhagavatam (Sri Vishnu Purana)

(Shukacharya Ji or Shuka Muni is an avatar of Lord Shiva)

Just hearing the divine Bhagavatam will get us the mukti / moksha (Divine liberation).

Simply chanting Lord Sri Krishna’s names will get us all the material and spiritual things without any question.

List of Saptah (Srimad Bhagwat Saptah) unknown facts are as given below:

Saptah = Sapta + Ha = Seven days + His = Seven days + Sri Krishna. | All the 7 days, we need to hear Srimad Bhagavatam (abour Sri Krishna) |

Parikshita heard from Sri Shukacharya Ji (Shuka Muni) | Sri Shukacharya Ji (Shuka Muni) is an avatar of Lord Shiva |

Just like marriage celebrations, we need to celebrate “Saptah” |

Bhadrapada, Ashwija, Kartika, Margashira, Ashada and Shravana are auspicious months for Saptah |

Bhadrapada is the most auspicious month for Saptah |

Brahmanas, Kshtriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras and even the Chandalas can hear Bhagavatam |

But, he / she should be a devotee of Lord Sri Krishna | Well decorated mantap has to be placed |

Mantap should have 7 stairs (steps) | This 7 steps signifies 7 lokas above Bhoodevi (Mother Earth) |

Vaktara (Vaktar) (Bhagavatam story teller) should be highly qualified in Hindu Shastras |

Vaktara should be a real devotee of Sri Krishna | Vaktara shouldn’t expect dakshina (money) |

Vaktara should pronounce Sanskrit properly | And many more…

Now, let us know more details about Saptah or Srimad Bhagawata Saptah as give below:

Just like marriage celebrations, we need to celebrate the “Saptaha” and for this correct muhurtam has to be taken after discussing with correct “Vaishnava Brahmana”

Most auspicious months for Srimad Bhagavatam pravachnam are as below:

1. Nabhasya (Bhadrapada) | 2. Ashwina (Ashwija) | 3. Urrja (Kartika) | 4. Margashirsha (Margashira) | 5. Suchihi (Ashada) | 6. Nabhaha (Shravana) |

That is, Ashada to Margashirsha months.

In other months can also be done, but above are very auspicious months compared to other months.

Among the above six auspicious months, “Bhadrapada” is the most important and very auspicious month for the Srimad Bhagavata shravana.

First and foremost, that is in the initial stage, the organizer should make propaganda about the Srimad Bhagavata shravan (pravachana) and give invitation to all real Vaishnavas for “Saptah or Saptaha“.

Anybody can come starting from Brahmanas, Kshtriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras and even the Chandalas can come for the shravana (hearing) of the Srimad Bhagavata Saptah.

But only thing is that he / she should be a Lord Sri Krishna bhakta / devotee, that is a real Vaishnava.

The place where the “Saptaha” will take place should be a large place, so that maximum people can be accommodated.

In the first, the place should be cleaned very very well.

Even in a house, it can be done if the organizer is not dhanika / wealthy (that is as per the yogyata / capability).

Left: Sri Lakshmi Narayana in Vaikuntha; Right: Sri Hari.

A tall mantapa with beautiful decorations with multiple flowers, tulasi, fruits, etc. should be done.

Bharatiya sampradaya flags has to be hoisted. Seven steps (staircase type) has to be done for the mantapa.

This is to explain that above our bhoodevi (mother earth), there are seven loka (planets).

The organizer should invite the shuddha Vaishnava bhaktadis / devotees to sit near the beautifully decorated mantapa. They should be given clean and beautiful sitting place (wooden plank).

The Vaktara (Srimad Bhagavatam story teller) should sit either facing purva (east) or uttara (north) and the people who are listening should sit either uttara (North) or purva (East).

If this is not possible, then the people should sit facing the Vaktara.

Somebody who is having the Vairagya in his life should be a Vaktara (Srimad Bhagavatam story teller) and not from someone who is only interested in the samsara (materialistic things).

Vaktara should be a shuddha (pure) bhakta (devotee). He should be very close and dear to Sri Krishna. He should have got Lord Sri Hari anugraha (blessings).

One should be careful to choose the correct Vaktara, as one should not listen from just anyone who has read the Srimad Bhagavatam without correct understanding.

Should listen from only whom who has given whole of his life to Lord Sri Vishnu and who is the parishuddha Vaishnava (Highly Pure Vaishnava).

and who has the confidence and capability to understand the Srimad Bhagavatam in the correct and right way.

Also, someone who listens the Srimad Bhagavatam should test the Vaktara about his reality and real capability,

and also how the Vaktara has understood the Srimad Bhagavatam and especially about his bhakti towards Sri Rama.

Sri Krishna having food with Balarama and other friends.

Vaktara should be a great bhakta off course, but with this, Vaktara should also must be always loving Lord Sri Krishna.

He should have the deep knowledge about Srimann Narayana.

(One should remember that nobody in this unlimited universes have the capability to understand completely about Sripati (Vishnu), including Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi, Sri Brahmadeva, Sri Rudra Deva etc.)

That Vaktara should love Srimad Bhagavatam 24 hours a day and also whole of his life.

Vaktara should be capable of giving discourses very very very well and with beautiful and correct words (correct pronunciation of Sanskrit words).

We should follow someone who explains in such a way, so that if the Vaktara is explaining about Srimad Bhagavatam,

that the whole Srimad Bhagavatam should be like happening in-front of us, that is just like it should be that all is happening in-front of our eyes.

With such kind of Guru (Vaktara), who has this most special capability and full bhakti / devotion, we should listen the full Srimad Bhagavatam.

Should never listen from such person, who comes and tells about the Srimad Bhagavatam for dakshina (money).

Should hear Srimad Bhagavatam from such a Guru who doesn’t has any apeksha (expectations).

In few words if we need to explain about the Guru, then that Guru should be a shuddha bhakta (pure devotee) of Sri Vishnu.

Should never listen from such people who are kutsitas (disagreeing) in their swabhava (nature).

Those are the people who tell as per their own knowledge and those who doesn’t have the correct nirnaya (correct knowledge) to make what is correct and what is wrong.

Someone, who goes behind women, should never ever listen the Srimad Bhagavatam from such person.

Left: Sri Krishna Rukmini divine marriage. Right; Sri Krishna visiting Vaikuntha along Arjuna to free the Brahmin’s children.

Should never listen from such a person who is a paakhandi (ill natured), that is –

who tells Srimad Bhagavatam which is completely incorrect and which is against the real Srimad Bhagavatam (that is against our Shastra).

He may be a big Pandita, but should never ever listen Srimad Bhagavatam from such paakhandi (ill natured).

We should even never listen even a shloka from such people.

Beside the correct Guru (Vaktara), another supporting (junior Guru, junior Vaktara) should be present and this Vaktara should have the capability of answering the questions of the people in the audience.

The organizer (main person) should do the “skhaura” (shaving) one day before the starting of the Srimad Bhagavatam and should do the sandhyaavandana.

Should do Sri Ganapati pooja and should give tarpana to all of his pitrus (ancestors).

To make his anga (body) and atma (soul) purify, he should do the “gau-danam” (donating cows).

Then he should take bath in the nearby river (if possible in Ganga river or any tirtha sthala nadi – pilgrimage place).

Should make arrangements of another mantapa in which the organizer should keep the Sri Lord Sri Krishna statue and do staapana (setting) of shaligrama.

Should do Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna) pooja and later should do Lord Sri Krishna stotram.

Should pray to Sri Krishna that, “I have fallen in the samsara and thus please remove me from this samsara and give me mukti / moksha“.

Above: Sri Krishna playing with his friends. Below: Sri Krishna and Rukmini Devi in the Dwaraka.

Later the organizer should do the pooja of the Sri Bhagavatam grantha (text) with full devotion with pradakshina.

And while standing on right side of Sri Bhagavatam grantha, the organizer should pray to Lord Sri Krishna to bless him in such a way that he should understand the Srimad Bhagavatam with each akshara (alphabet) and get rid of all agnana (ignorance).

Also, should pray to Lord Sri Krishna that, in next seven days I am going to hear the Srimad Bhagavatam, so kindly give me blessings to get all the ishta prasadam (wishes as per the will) to me.

We should seek blessings from Sri Krishna to show the path of gnana. This we should do in full bhakti (with deep devotion).

Now the organizer should do pooja of the “Vaktara”, who will be reciting the Srimad Bhagavatam.

The organizer should give correct seating place and new clothes to him.

We should seek blessings from him by telling that in you Sri Shukacharya (Shuka Muni) is present, in you Sri Narada Maharushi is present,

in you Sri Sanakaadi are present. You know all the shastra. Please give us the teachings and give us knowledge as given in Srimad Bhagavatam only.

Later, we should do achamanam and should do sankalpa like in next seven days –

“I (organizer) will do upavasa (fasting) for all seven days or will eat just once in a day or will eat just ghee or will eat just fruits or will drink just milk for all the seven days

or I will do whatever possible as per my yogyata (capability). I will do my best possible service towards Sri Rama.”

We should clean the legs of the Vaktara and same paadodaka we should shower on ourselves and on all the people who have come on this most special occasion.

Later the organizer should request the pancha (five) Brahmana to chant Sri Vasudeva Dvadasha Akshara mantra,

so that for next seven days, the Srimad Bhagavatam should be recited / explained for next seven days without any vighna (obstacles).

Left: Sri Krishna freeing the divine ladies who were kidnapped by Narakasura. Right: Sri Krishna and Jambuvati Devi marriage.

We all know that Vaktara is sitting, thus we should do pooja of the Vaktara or somebody who is better in yogyata of this Vaktara first, and later to the Srimad Bhagavatam reciting Vaktara.

Then we should do pooja of those pancha Brahmana.

Later, the organizer should do namaskara to all the other Brahmanas, Vaishnavas and all others we have gathered in that place.

With this, the organizer should sit near the Vaktara to start listening of the Srimad Bhagavatam.

The organizer should forget everything, what he wants to do like his business, the worldly works etc. and should give 100% concentration towards Srimad Bhagavatam recitation from the Vaktara.

Such purusha will get shrestta (best) blessings from Sri Hari.

Srimad Bhagavatam should be explained very clearly, loudly, so that all can hear without any problems.

Later, during the afternoon, a break of one muhurta (48 minutes) should be taken for food and other things.

One should always remember that food should be taken very very limitedly.

Also, one should remember that if one is not able to do full upavasa (fasting), then he / she can have limited food and thus carefully & with full bhakti should make shravana (hear) the Srimad Bhagavatam.

The Srimad Bhagavatam says the purusha who does upavasa and doesn’t do shravana of Srimad Bhagavatam is of no use.

He can have some food, but limited food and then can listen with utmost bhakti, instead just listening Srimad Bhagavatam without bhakti.

But one should remember that the people or purusha who does the shravana (hear) of the great Srimad Bhagavatam with highest devotion,

(with upavasa or without upavasa, but limited food) only will get full blessings, instead the purusha with less bhakti or no bhakti (this is until we do full shravana of Srimad Bhagavatam).

Left: Sri Krishna with Rukmini Devi & Satyabhama Devi. Right: Sri Krishna’s Tulabharam episode.

Note: Here, there is no niyama that one should do shravana (hear) the Srimad Bhagavatam in just seven days. Instead, more time can be taken, but it should be done with complete bhakti and carefulness.

Also, someone who want to do shravan (hear) of Srimad Bhagavatam should follow Bhramacharya vrata for all seven days,

one should never eat in a plate other than the leaf and one should never eat before or during the shravana.

But may have highly limited food during the break of one muhurta time.

One should leave all mada, matsarya, ahankaara, lobha etc. to do shravana of Srimad Bhagavatam.

The organizer must not do ninda of Vaishnavas, Brahmanas, Go maata, Sri Krishna, Sri Bhagavottamas or anybody who make shravana of Srimad Bhagavatam with utmost bhakti.

One should have daya (kindness), one should be good to all, one should speak very less and if anybody who speaks also it should be about Sri Krishna only.

Such purusha have all the rights to make shravana of Srimad Bhagavatam.

Someone who makes the katha (Srimad Bhagavatam katha) vighna (ill workds), like if anyone who speaks unwanted and unnecessary words during the shravana of Srimad Bhagavatam, will take birth as a pishacha in the next birth.

Thus, one should be highly careful on this situation. With this, one should follow the mounaacharana.

The purusha who make shravana of Srimad Bhagavatam, should be an udaara mano bhava purusha from his mana (mind).

Should do daana-dharma. Such purusha, have all the rights to make sharavana of Sri Hari’s Srimad Bhagavatam.

One who is daridra (wretched), should make shravana of Srimad Bhagavatam with full bhakti and utmost interest,

then he gets the ashirvaada of Srimann Narayana and all his daridra (wretched) will get maaya (go away) from his life.

If someone is infected with diseases like kshayaroga (or any disease), should listen Srimad Bhagavatam with complete bhakti to get rid of that roga (disease) slowly and definitely to get back to his / her normal health.

Anyone who has lost the bhagya, should listen to Srimad Bhagavatam to get back his soubhagya.

If one doesn’t have children, should hear Srimad Bhagavatam and definitely they will be blessed with Bhagavottama children.

All these above are material. But, someone who want moksha / mukti should listen to Srimad Bhagavatam.

A girl who doesn’t have the qualities of a woman, will get her charm to be a real pushpavati if she makes shravana of Srimad Bhagavatam.

One should make sure if a lady is pregnant, then such a lady should make shravana of Srimad Bhagavatam.

With this a real Vaishnava baby will be born who will be a great bhakta / bhakte (devotee) of Sri Hari.

Someone who is losing the baby during pregnancy or during the procreate time should listen to Srimad Bhagavatam, then the baby will be born which will be a healthy and also a real follower of Sri Krishna.

One should note that, someone who is doing one koti (crore) yagna, will get same phala (fruit) for listening just once Srimad Bhagavatam, but definitely same has to be done with utmost bhakti.

Now coming back, both the Vaktara and the organizer should do udyaapana.

If someone who doesn’t have money, then that person can do upyaapana from his mana (mind / heart).

Sri Krishna will always be happy with bhakti and nothing else.

If someone is having money, then that purusha should do udyaapana as per his yogyata (both Vaktara and organizer).

As a purusha does during the Janumastami (Sri Krishna Janumastami), same type of udyaapana one should do during the shravana of Srimad Bhagavatam, but definitely with full bhakti.

Then finally after the seven days of Srimad Bhagavatam shravana, the pooja of the Srimad Bhagavatam granta and the pooja of the Vaktara has to be done.

Everyone, who is present during this auspicious time, should be given the prasadam with the tulasi which was put on to Sri Krishna paada.

Sankeertana should be done with the mrudanga vaadya.

All present should say Jai Jai to Srimad Bhagavatam, Jai Jai to Sri Krishna, Jai Jai to Sri Vedavyasa Deva, Jai Jai Sri Shuka Muni Ji,

Jai Jai to Sri Narada Maharishi, Jai Jai to Sanakaadi Muni, Jai Jai to Parikshita Maharaja, Jai Jai to Sri Shounakaadi Muni, Jai Jai to Sri Madhvacharya Ji,

Jai Jai to all who have given the whole of there life to Srimad Bhagavatam, Jai Jai to all the Sri Daasas. Namaskaara to all.

One should proudly and with utmost bhakti should chant the above.

With this, the shankha naada to be done to glorify the greatness of Srimad Bhagavatam and Sri Krishna.

Should donate food to all the needy and all to those who seek the food. He / She may be a Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra, Chandaala etc, to anyone to everyone who follow Sri Krishna.

Then finally, the next day (eighth day), the Srimad Bhagavadgeeta has to be recited.

One who is virakta or a real bhakta on the eighth day Srimad Bhagavadgeeta vaachya (to recite) has to be done.

Also, on eighth day the homa has to be done with the shloka which are given in the 10th skanda using tila, payasam, honey, ghee etc. and or with Gayatri havana (Sri Gayatri mantra).

Or if someone who doesn’t have money to do homa, then just tila, payasam, honey, ghee, dravya daana has to be done as per yogyata (capability).

Thus, we will get the full prasaada (ashirvaada) of the saptaha and homa.

If we have money, we can do all the above or if we don’t have money, best possible things has to be done as per the yogyata.

Finally if any nyunate (drawbacks / mistakes) has happen, then we should do the Sri Vishnusahasranaama japa.

Thus everything will be saphala (success).

First, SRIMAD BHAGAVATAM —–> SRIMAD BHAGAVAD GEETA —–> SRI VISHNUSAHASRANAAMA phathana (Reading) has to be done.

Thus finally the organizer has to thanks to Sri Krishna that, with dvadasha akshara phatthana, everything has happened with nirvighna.

The organizer should seek dvadasha Bhagavad chintana with dvadasha (12) Brahmana.

The organizer should donate bhojana to all these Brahmanas.

If we have enough money, we can do suvarna, rajata, go daana to all the Brahmanas.

To complete the Srimad Bhagavatam, if the organizer has the dravya (money), then that organizer can make the suvarna peetha.

Later, the Srimad Bhagavatam granta should be kept on that suvarna aasana (simhaasana) and with bhakti, pooja has to be done to the Srimad Bhagavatam granta which is been kept on the aasana.

Later this simhasana has to be given in the form of daana to a shrestta-shrestta Brahmana, who has made the shravana of the great Srimad Bhagavatam with complete bhakti.

To that Vaktara, the organizer has to make daana of that simhaasana.

If such daana is done, then the organizer will be free from the bhava bandha.

Thus if the organizer makes all the above, then that purusha will get all the dharma, artha, kaama and finally the moksha / mukti.

That is the greatness of the great Srimad Bhagavatam.
