Famous curses in Mahabharata | Famous vows in Mahabharata | And many more…

The Great Mahabharata is not just story, but it is full of knowledge, expertise, realization, awareness, etc.

Any wise person who reads and / or hear the Great Mahabharata can easily understand the greatness and importance of the Great Mahabharata.

But, this has to be done under a correct Guru, as in today’s days there are many Swamys, Babas who doesn’t know a bit Sanskrit,

but they have stated to teach the Great Mahabharata and other Hindu Great Granthas (divine books).

Thus we have to learn the Great Mahabharata and other Hindu Granthas (Hindu divine books) only under the guidance of correct Guru who have come in the Parampara (lineage) of Lord Sri Vishnu.

Now, let us know the importance vows and curses in the Great Mahabharata.

The important vows taken during the Great Mahabharata period are as given below:

1. Bhishma took a great vow that he won’t desire for death, until Hastinapura is fully protected.

2. Karna took a vow that he will donate anything and everything or in any sense whatever is asked from him by anyone,

after his prayer for Lord Sri Surya Deva (The Sun God) during the Sandhyavandanam period.

3. Bhishma took a vow, that he will kill at least 10,000 warriors everyday in the Kurukshetra (Mahabharata) battle.

4. Karna took a vow, that he won’t use any arrow or shaft more than once against anybody.

5. Bhishma took a vow that he won’t kill any of the Pandavas in his life time.

6. Bhishma took a vow that he don’t want to become the commander of the Kaurava army, if Karna will fight alongside Kauravas.

7. Bhishma took a vow that he will neither use weapons nor defend himself against any woman in any war.

8. Arjuna took a vow after Abhimanyu’s death, that he will kill Jayadratha before day 14 sunset of the Kurukshetra (Mahabharata) battle.

9. Shalya took a vow, that he will distract and discourage Karna if he will be appointed as Karna’s charioteer.

10. Draupadi Devi took a vow, that she will tie her hairs only after washing them with Dushasana’s blood after the ‘Vastra-haranam’ (disrobe) incident.

11. Bhima took a vow, that he will break Duryodhana’s thighs after Draupadi Devi’s Vastra-haranam (disrobe).

12. Bhima took a vow, that he will drink blood of Dushasana’s chest and uproot his arm after Draupadi Devi’s great insult.

13. Arjuna took a vow that whoever will say him to abandon his Gandiva dhanush (bow), he will slay him.

14. Bhishma had taken a very strong vow, that he will not marry for the welfare and protection of the Kuru Kingdom of Hastinapura.

That’s why Devavrata (Bhishma’s original name) became to be known as Bhishma. Here Bhishma, means a person who takes a Bhikhara (very strong) vow.

15. Lord Sri Krishna took a vow that he won’t touch weapon in the Kurukshetra / Mahabharata battle.

16. Bhishma took a vow that he will break Lord Sri Krishna’s vow.

17. Karna took a vow, that he would not kill any Pandavas in the form of Kunti’s danam / donation other than Arjuna.

18. Bhishma, Dronacharya, Karna took vows, that they will secure Duryodhana from his enemies and not let him be killed by anyone under their commands on:

day 0, day 10 and day 15 respectively in Kurukshetra battle.

19. Sahadeva had taken a vow, that he will kill Shakuni during the Kurukshetra / Mahabharata war.

20. Ashvatthama on day 15 of Kurukshetra battle took a vow that he will kill all the Panchals (people belonging to a place called Panchal) (including Dhrishtadyumna) after Dronacharya’s death.

21. Ghatotkacha on day 8 of Kurukshetra battle took a vow, that he will kill Alambusha (a monster) after Iravana’s death.

Iravana was the son of Arjuna and his wife Ulupi / Uluchi [She was Naga-Kanya (serpent woman).

22. Lord Sri Krishna had informed Shishupala’s mother Shrutashrava, that he will spare her son until he makes 100 sin.

But as soon as Shishupala makes 101th sin, he will be killed immediately.

List of the curses given during Mahabharata period is as given below:

1. Once an apasara called Urvashi Devi cursed Arjuna that he will live a life of Gay for a year.

But, we should note that Urvarshi Devi was like a mother to Arjuna and thus he didn’t accepted the love proposal of Urvashi Devi.

And also we should note that Lord Sri Krishna has designed everything so well, that even the curse(s) would become a boon to a sajjana (somebody who follows the Sanatana Dharma in the right way).

2. Bhoodevi (Mother Earth) had cursed Karna, that when he will be fighting against his greatest foe, his chariot’s wheel will sink into earth and that will cause huge problems to him.

3. Lord Sri Parashurama (he is an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu similar to Lord Sri Krishna) had cursed Karna that:

whenever he (Karna) would need the knowledge of divine weapons most, he would forget all the knowledge of them.

Lord Sri Parashurama was against the Kshatriyas (please remember against the adharmi / ill Khatriyas).

The curse was given to Karna as Lord Sri Parashurama had came to know that Karna was not a Brahmana and is definitely a Kshatriya.

4. A Brahmana cattleman had cursed Karna, that he will be totally helpless when he will fight against his biggest foe.

5. Yudhishthira had cursed all the women after Karna’s death, that from that time onwards no woman will be able to keep any secret in her life time.

6. After the battle of Kurukshetra / Mahabharata, Gandhari cursed Lord Sri Krishna that Yadu-vansh (Yaduvamsha) (Yadu Dynasty) will be destroyed in the same manner like Kuruvansh had destroyed.

We should remember that Lord Sri Krishna is ‘svayam Bhagavan (God)’, and no one can harm him in anyway.

But, here Lord Sri Krishna accepted this curse to show to the world that destruction is not the answer for any worries.
