Just before going to “Which is better Cremation (burning) or Burial (burying) (Hinduism) | Antya sanskar and Shava sanskar information | Why do we (Hindus) cremate the dead body instead of burying?“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

First of all we should all remember is that the ultimate truth is all have to die one or the other day and as soon as someone dies, the ‘atma’ (soul) will leave the body, that is, the atma (soul) should get detached at the earliest.

Few people do die early, where as few die little later. But it is 100% we have to leave our body and have to merge into ‘pancha bhootas’ (the basic five elements of nature) one or the ultimate day.

Thus, let us know from this post (article) and understand the importance of which is better, that is, whether cremation (antya sanskar) is better or burial (burying) (shava sanskar) is better.

As per the ‘grand first Hindu tradition’ (Adi-Hindu sampradayam), cremation or ‘antya sanskar’ is the best way, as it is the way which shows the dead body to get merged with the ‘Pancha bhootas’ (five elements, i.e., Bhoomi-Earth, Jalam-water, Vayu-Air, Agni-Fire and Akasha-Space).

Let’s understand this by point by point by taking various examples as given below.

List of points to show which is better cremation (burning) (antya sanskar) or burial (burying) (shava sanskar) as given below:

Rituals to be performed before Sunset : The best time of cremation (burning) (antya sanskar) should be done before the Sunset, so that no negative energy (nakaratmaka shakti) approaches the dead body.

In burial (burying) (shava sanskar), since the dead body remains either outside the earth or inside the earth, any negative energy (nakaratmaka shakti) can easily disturb the normal procedure of final funeral procedure.

Body air (Vayu) should easily disintegrated into the atmosphere : By performing cremation (antya sanskar), the five vital energy that is, ‘Prana Vaayu‘ (breathing), ‘Apana Vaayu‘ (excretion), ‘Udana Vaayu‘ (Voice-related to thyroid gland),

Samana Vaayu‘ (Stomach-related to metabolism) and ‘Vyana Vaayu‘ (flow of oxygen to all parts of the body using blood) will easily get disintegrated into the atmosphere.

And similarly, the five sub vital energy, that is, ‘Naaga Vaayu‘ (belching, burping and related winds of stomach), ‘Koorma Vaayu‘ (sneezing and related to nose), ‘Krikara Vaayu‘ (blinking of eyes),

Devadatta Vaayu‘ (Yawning), ‘Dhananjaya Vaayu‘ (Twitching-sudden movement of any part of the body), can also easily get disintegrated into the atmosphere.

While burying (burial) (shava sanskar) the dead body, non of the vital energy can be disintegrated properly into the atmosphere, since the dead body will be inside the earth and it’s impossible for any ‘Vaayu’ (air) or energy to get disintegrated easily into the environment.

Fire acts as the protective shield to the dead body : In cremation (antya sanskar) the fire (agni) which will be surrounded with the dead body will be build as a protective shield, so that any further small negative energy (nakaratmaka shakti) won’t be able to harm the deady body (this may include flies, insects, etc.).

While if someone performs the burial (burying) (shave sanskar), all the flies, insects, and many micro organism which are present inside the earth can easily harm the dead body.

Atma (soul) should easily leave the body : Since in the cremation (antya sanskar) the whole body disintegrates into five vital energy and five sub vital energy as said above,

the bond between the subtle body (sukshma deham) and physical body (bhoutika deham) is broken, so the atma (soul) can leave the body in peace and can reach to it’s destination.

While in burial (burying) (shava sanskar), since no energy comes out of the body easily, both the subtle body (sukshma deham) and physical body (bhoutika deham) bond is not broken and it is difficult for the atma (soul) to reach to it’s destination easily.

Fire gives extra protection also : Also the fire (agni) provides an extra protective sheath against the ‘rajasic’ and ‘tamasic’ tendencies of the dead body, which the body would had occupied before the death.

Thus, making the whole body as a satvic body and finally the atma (soul) will be ready to reach his realm. But in the burial (burying) (shava sanskar) this is not at all possible.

Lot of space is wasted : To do burial (burying) (shava sanskar) lot of space has to be used permanently or at-least for many months, which is an useless thing to do.

In cremation (antya sanskar) the place will be used only for, not more than three days. After three days, a new cremation (antya sanskar) can be performed at the same place again. This can be repeated again and again, unlike in burial.

Yes indeed some wood has to be used here and some smoke will be emanating, but this is natural and has to be practiced, since in the Hindu tradition there is a saying: “if we want to gain something, then we need to lose something too”.

We don’t mind to lose little bit, so that it will be easy to the dead body to be in peace and it’s atma (soul) to read it’s abode easily and in time. Moreover, wood doesn’t spread pollution, but instead it is used for the sky to gather rainy clouds.

Cremation protects from wild animals : While after completing the burial (shava sanskar), when all the people leave that place, any wild animal can come there and it may disturb the dead body.

In cremation (antya sanskar), there is no chance of this type of activity, since fire (agni) is used here and no animal can come near to the dead body.

Environmental problems due to disease : During the burial (shava sanskar) if the person who has died because of the acute disease, then it is bad to the place and it’s surroundings, and also to the people who live around that place.

While in the cremation (antya sanskar), since fire (agni) is known as ‘sarva-bhakshaka’ (fire can make everything and anything into ashes), there is no problem to anybody or anything.

Cremation helps body to get mix with environment very easily : Cremation (antya sanskar) is useful to get the dead body to get mix into the ‘pancha bhootas’ (5 elements) very quickly (at most 24 hours) and the atma (soul) can come out of the dead body very easily and can reach it’s destination without any hardship.

But while in burial (shava sanskar), it can take several months to mix into the ‘pancha bhutas’, which makes the soul (atma) avoid easy release from its dead body.

Cremation helps in rebirth easily : As per Hindu tradition, once the dead body completes it’s cremation (antya sanskar), then the atma (soul) goes and mixes into pancha bhootas.

And later if the body has it’s rebirth (this would depend as per that person’s Karma), then it will be a new beginning to everything for that person. This means, a new body, new life, new parents, new place, everything will be new and that person has to start from the basic again.

In other traditions, where people expect the dead body to get up again with the same body is not as per the principles of the nature and also this has never happened & would never happen too.

Corona has showed us cremation is best : In the recent times, whole world has witnessed that burning (cremation) the dead body is best option as it avoids the spreading of pandemic diseases.

In burial (cremation), the chances of disease spreading contagiously and getting others into problems are very high.

PS: Whatever Bhagavan (God) Lord Sri Vishnu has created is recycled by Bhagavan (God) Lord Sri Vishnu himself. For example if coconut shell mixes into mud then it will take few days to merge into the same mud.

But if the living body, like the humans, then it will take very long time to merge into the mud and again to get recycle (this will be according to that person’s karma) it will take more time.

Let us not avoid to recycle the human body as per the Bhagavan (God) Lord Sri Vishnu likings. Let Bhagavan (God) Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna) be the decision maker, we are mere humans and let us be mere humans only and let not act as Bhagavan (God).
