Just before going to “What is the story of Dhruv in Vishnu Puran (Bhagavatam)? | What is the importance of Dhruv Tara? | How Dhruv became pole (celestial) star story | Why Dhruv did tapasya (penance) at young age“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

Dhruva parents names are : Uttānapāda (father) and Suniti (mother). | Dhruva wives names are : Brāhmī and Ilā. | Dhruva children names are : Kalpa and Vatsara (from Brāhmī), Utkala (from Ilā).

How long did Dhruva did tapasya (penance) : For 6+ months. Dhruva is called as pole star or celestial star or Polaris.

Lord Sri Vishnu (Narayana) created Lord Sri Brahma Deva. And in turn Lord Sri Brahma Deva created Manu (Here it should be noted from the Sanskrit word Manu, English word Man has come).

Manu had two sons, namely Priyavrata and Uttanapada. Uttanapada had two wives, their names were Suniti and Suruchi.

Suniti’s son name was Dhruva and whereas the name of the Suruchi’s son was Uttama.

Uttanapada became the King of the earth after Manu. King Uttanapada had more attraction towards Suruchi than Suniti.

Thus, Suruchi had command over the Suniti and his son Dhruva and also had control over her husband Uttanapada.

Once Suruchi’s son was sitting on the lap of his father King Uttanapada. As a five year old even the other son Dhruva would like to sit on the lap of his father. Thus, Dhruva tried to sit on the other lap of his father.

Suruchi doesn’t like this and she pushes Dhruva and scolds Dhruva not to come near his father, as he is the king and only the real son of the king should always be with the king.

That is, for Suruchi, only her own son Uttama had all the freedom to be with his father (Uttanapada) and Dhruva had no freedom to be with his own father (Uttanapada).

This angered the little Dhruva and he directly went to his mother Suniti and explained all the story which happened.

Suniti explained to Dhruva that the present situation of ours all depends on how we were in our previous life and all depends on the karmas we have performed.

May be we (Suniti and Dhruva) had performed bad Karmas, that’s why our situation is like this and Suruchi and her son must had performed good Karmas and therefore they are in the better position.

These words went inside little Dhruva’s mind like a sharp arrow which would make wound to some person after piercing into the enemy body.

Dhruva’s mother adviced him to go to the forest and pray to Lord Sri Vishnu. This made little Dhruva more determined and he straight away went to the forest.

While on the way he also meets the Saptharishi (seven Rishis). Saptharishis asks little Dhruva that being so young boy what are you doing in this ‘ghana-ghora aranyam’ (dense forest).

Little Dhruva (Dhruv) explains all that happened to all the Saptharishi.

On this Saptharishis also advice little Dhruva to pray and to do tapasya (penance) to Lord Sri Vishnu. If you do tapasya (penance) Lord Sri Vishnu who is called as the ‘karunaamayi’ (merciful), ‘deenabandhu’ (protector of his devotees) will definitely help you.

This increased little Dhruva’s self belief and he started to do the tapasya (penance) in the forest. Also the great Narada Maharshi helps Dhruva in doing the tapasya (penance) in the forest.

Narada Maharshi suggests Dhruva (Dhruv) to do ‘naama smaranam’ (chanting of the name) of the Lord Sri Vaasudeva (another name of Lord Sri Vishnu), that is, to chant this mantra:

“Om Namo Bhagavate Vaasudevaaya” (“ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय”) (“ōṁ namō bhagavatē vāsudēvāya”) (“ಓಂ ನಮೋ ಭಗವತೇ ವಾಸುದೇವಾಯ”).

Thus, for many months Dhruva was making the tapasya (penance), but Lord Sri Vishnu never came in front of Dhruva all these days.

But, Dhruva was determined to see the Lord Sri Bhagavan Vishnu and he continued.

During Dhruva’s tapasya (penance), Dhruva preferred to do tapasya by merely eating fallen green leaves and water for some time and continued the tapasya with mere water for some more time.

Further his tapasya was continued with no food or water but by mere breathing (air).

When Dhruva could not see the Lord Sri Vishnu even at the cost of deep devotional tapasya, Dhruva stopped breathing and prayed Lord Sri Vishnu by holding his breath.

In the meantime, Lord Sri Indra Deva and others started to fear for their lives and the ‘swarga adhipati’ (King of Svarga / Heaven – Lord Sri Indra Deva) started to think that Dhruva is making tapasya to get the ‘Indra padavi’ (Indra’s place).

So, all the ‘ashta dikhpaalakas’ (Indra and other 7 demi-gods) went to Lord Sri Vishnu and informed to Lord Sri Vishnu that a person named Dhruva is making a ‘ghana-ghora taspasya’ (very very hard penance) and he may want the ‘Indra padavi’ (Indra’s place).

On this Lord Sri Vishnu (Narayana) smiles and tells to Lord Sri Indra Deva that, Dhruva is not looking for your padavi (position) (place), instead his requirements are something else.

Only after hearing these words from Lord Sri Vishnu, Lord Sri Indra Deva and all other demi-gods gets calmed down and all go back to their places.

After many months of tapasya, Lord Sri Vaasudeva (Vishnu) comes in front of the Dhruva and ask Dhruva the reason for his ‘ghana-ghora tapasya’ (Very very hard penance).

Lord Sri Vishnu in his Lord Sri Vaasudeva form asks Dhruva that, are you looking for some raajyam (to be a King) or the ‘Indra padavi’ or the place of the Lord Sri Brahma Deva itself.

On this Dhruva with lot of gentleness, bows down his head in front of Lord Sri Vaasudeva and explains that:

he (Dhruva) is not looking for any Kingdom, neither for the ‘Indra padavi’ nor for the Lord Sri Brahma Deva’s place. But instead he is looking to become something so that he should always be remembered for.

Every person on this ‘bhoomandalam’ (earth) should be thinking of him (Lord Sri Vishnu) more often and should be giving his (Dhruva) example to others, so that he (Dhruva) should be remembered for long-long time.

Hearing these words, Lord Sri Vasudeva become happy and tells to Dhruva that in his previous life Dhruva was born as a brahmana (brahmin) son and was very poor, while Dhruva’s friend was a rich and wealthy prince.

Hence, in his next life Dhruva wished to be born as a prince, so is that Dhruva is a Prince in the present life.

And on the requests of the Dhruva, Lord Sri Vaasudeva said that, he can be a nakshatra (star) which would always be shining for many-many thousands and lakhs of years to come and no nakshatra (star) (Dhruva tara) in the sky would be shining with the capacity of the Dhruva nakshatra (star) (Dhruva tara).

Also Lord Sri Vaasudeva (Vishnu) gave the blessings to Dhruva that his mother Suniti would also be a nakshatra (star) (tara) which would always be beside the Dhruva nakshatra (Dhru Tara).

‘Dhruva Raja’ now being the Maharaja of ‘Dhruva Mandala’ (Pole star) is in-charge of controlling all the ‘Nava Grahas’ (nine planets), the Kalachakra, etc.

Dhruva’s Loka (planet) is called as Dhruva Loka is situated 13 Lakh Yojana above Rishi Mandala from where Dhruva controls the movement of all the ‘nava grahas’ like Sun, Moon & other planets.

Dhruva or Dhruva Raja holds his office of the emperorship of the Dhruva Loka for a period of one Brahma Kalpa, which is 100 years of Lord Sri Brahma Deva as per Brahma Loka (Satya Loka).

Hearing all these, Dhruva became very happy and thanked the Lord Sri Vaasudeva (Vishnu) for all the blessings bestowed on him.

Thus, Dhruva nakshatra or Dhruv Tara (star), that is, celestial star or pole star is the most adorned star in the sky even today and it is the pole star in the sky.

Moral of Dhruva story : Lord Sri Vishnu is the most merciful. What ever his devotees asks for, he will rightly grant the same wishes immediately to his devotees.

Only thing we should have is the pure bhakti (devotion) and ‘dhruda-prayatnam’ (firm effort) and at the right time Lord Sri Vishnu blesses all as per our Karmas.
