Just before going to “How earth got the name Prithvi (King Vena and King Prithu story) | Who gave name Prithvi to earth?“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

King (Raja) Prithu father name is : King Vena. | King (Raja) Prithu wife (consort) name is : Archi. | King (Raja) Prithu Guru name is : Guru Shukracharya. | King (Raja) Prithu children (son) name is : Vijitsatva.

In the family tree of the Dhruva, there used to be a Raja (King) known as Raja Vena. (Note : Same Dhruva who did tapasya / penance of Lord Sri Vishnu – Vasudeva at the very young of 5 years with the Lord Sri Vishnu’s another name ‘Sri Bhagavate Vasudevaya namaha’)

King (Raja) Vena was highly ADharmi (not follower of Dharma), he was not at all following the Dharma, he was against Lord Sri Vishnu. He was questioning all his people and Rishis (Sages) that why should Lord Sri Vishnu should be given so much of importance.

King (Raja) VEna was telling to others that, he himself is far superior than Lord Srimann Narayana (Lord Sri Vishnu). Many Maharishis tried to persuade King (Raja) Vena, but always it was in vain.

All the Rishis, Brahmanas (Brahmins), and all the learned people decided that King (Raja) Vena should be killed for the ‘loka uddharam’ (to save the world) and in the goodwill of all the people on earth.

So all the Rishis (Sages) chanted mantras to kill King (Raja) Vena using an ordinary ‘darbam’ (grass) and using that simple darbam (grass) they killed King (Raja) Vena. Now a new problem started, that is, who will rule this earth without a good Raja (King), since even King (Raja) Vena didn’t had any child.

Therefore, all the Rishis (Sages) started to knead the thighs of the King (Raja) Vena and thus came out a dwarf who just looked like a short ‘kambham’ (pillar). Just after this, that dwarf started to ask, “what should I do”?. For this, all the Rishis (Sages) told the dwarf that, you first sit here.

Thus the dwarf’s name was known as ‘Nishadha’, since immediately after the birth of Nishadha he sat down. Thus the next generations of Nishadha went to ‘Vindhya Parvatam’ (Vindhya mountains). Now all the Rishis (Sages) started to knead the right hand of the dead body of Raja (King) Vena.

Thus came another man with a ‘prajvalita deham’ (highly bright body) and at the same time all these things fell from the sky, that is, dhanush (bow), banams (arrows) and kavacham (armor) beside the great man (personality) (Prithu).

Seeing all these, the Rishis (Sages) came to know that is not a ‘saadharana purusha’ (ordinary person) and must have been sent by swayam Lord Bhagavan Sri Vishnu.

Even ‘Samudra Raja’ (King of Ocean – Lord Sri Varuna) came with lot of jewelry to give as present to Prithu. Even Lord Sri Brahma Deva came from the Satya Lokam to see Prithu. On his arrival, Lord Sri Brahma Deva saw a ‘chakra’ (disc) mark on the right hand of the Prithu.

Thus, even Lord Sri Brahma Deva came to know that this is no ‘saadharana manushyam’ (not ordinary person) and should be an amsha (part) of the swayam Lord Bhagavan SRi Vishnu. This man cannot be an enemy of the Devatas (Demigods), that is, Prithu is not like the Vena.

But instead Prithu was a supporter of the Devatas (Demigods), also Lord Sri Brahma Deva came to know that Prithu will be a ‘Dharmatma’ (follower of Dharma) and will follow all the Dharma of the Great Sanatana Dharma.

Prithu was made the Raja (King) of this entire earth. On knowing that Prithu became the Raja (King) of the entire earth, even oceans gave the way to Raja (King) Prithu to cross easily without any problem.

Mountains were in happiness. Also the ‘bhoo-maata’ (Mother earth) gave the crops without any watering. Honey came out of the flowers just like the water falls. Such was the ‘mahaanata’ (greatness) of the Raja (King) Prithu.

Soon after this, Raja (King) Prithu started to do Yagnas. From this Yagna there came the Sutas and Magadhas. Both Sutas and Magadhas started to sing songs in the appreciation of the Raja (King) Prithu.

But the time interval between the Raja (King) Vena and the Raja (King) Prithu was very short. There was no proper food to eat, no shelter to many poor people, crops were not growing properly, there was only dry land all across the world.

This happens when there is no proper and Dharmatma (follower of Dharma) Raja (King) on this earth or also happens when there is no correct Raja on this earth.

So all the subjects / people went to Raja (King) Prithu and described all their grievances and told Raja (King) Prithu that they have no food, no water, no crops are growing, everywhere it is like drought. Please help us, kindly save us from this hard situation.

Hearing all these, Raja (King) Prithu took his dhanush (bow) and baanam (arrow) and started to chase the ‘Bhoo-Maata’ (Mother earth) who had taken the form of the Gau (Go) (Cow). Gau (Go) Maata (Mother Earth) had thought that Raja (King) Prithu is chasing her to kill her.

But, Raja (King) Prithu was chasing Bhoo-Maata (Mother Earth) who was in the form of Gau-Maata (Mother Cow) to restore the jadi-booti (herbs), crops, and many other things which are very essential for the use of every ordinary human.

Thus, finally somehow Raja (King) Prithu caught hold of the Bhoo-Maata (Mother Earth) and restored few of the available jadi-booti (herbs), crops and all the essential items which were necessary for the humans and all the living beings on this earth.

Earlier to this, there was no nagaram (city), no gramam (village), no dhanyam (grains), no pashu-sangopanam (animal husbandry), no vyavasaayam (agriculture), no vyavahaaram (trading). Thus, because of the Raja (King) Prithu everything was possible.

Because of all these good Karmas (good deeds) of the Raja (King) Prithu, our earth came to be known as Prithvi. In Sanskrit Prithvi means someone who was restored by. That is, Since Raja (King) Prithu restored earth back, and thus earth is also called as Prithvi.

King (Raja) Prithu ruled whole world in a prosperous manner. His capital is believed to be present day Haryana. During his reign, there was no disease, no unnatural death, no pains and sufferings and no complaints from the people.

Prithu donated the wealth of the people and provided food to the Brahmin scholars and treated them with great respect.

Raja (King) Prithu’s Guru (Teacher) was Shukracharya, and King (Raja) Prithu learned all divine things from Guru Shukracharya. King (Raja) Prithu has various good qualities and is praised by the Devatas (Demigods) in the Swarga Loka (Heaven) and other higher planets.

Elephant Airavata and King Prithu – Elephant Airavata or Iravata or Airavat is Lord Sri Indra’s white elephant vehicle. According to the Ramayana, Airavata’s mother was Kadru’s daughter and Maharshi Kashyapa’s granddaughter Iravati.

Matangalila says that Airavata was born when Lord Sri Brahma chanted holy hymns on the half of the egg shell hatched by Lord Sri Garuda. After Airavata, seven more male and eight female elephants were born.

Abharamu (अब्रामु / Abhramu) is the elephant consort of Iravata or Airavata, she has four tusks and seven trunks and has spotless white color. Prithu eventually made Airavata or Iravata the king of all elephants.

Is King (Raja) Prithu an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu – As per the great Vaishnava Guru and Saint ‘Sri Madhwacharya Ji’ King (Raja) Prithu had the amsha (ansh) (divine presence) of Lord Sri Vishnu, but he is not an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu.

Just like Balarama had the amsha (ansh) (divine presence) of Lord Sri Vishnu, even King (Raja) Prithu had it, but both Balarama and King (Raja) Prithu are not the avatars of Lord Sri Vishnu as per Sri Madhwacharya Ji.

PS: It should be noted that, our Indian (Bharat / Sanatana Dharma) Rishis (Sages) had the shakti (powers), which could easily destroy even great Rajas (Kings). Just using a simple darbam (grass) they were able to kill Vena. That is the greatness of our Rishis (Sages).

Also it should be noted that Raja (King) Prithu was the first Raja of this earth who restored many things and also who started many new things which was of great help to every human being and also to all living beings on this earth.

So, let us all do a big ‘namaskaaram’ (namaste) (salutation) and tell the Great Raja (King) Prithu many dhanyavadamm (thanks) for providing all these necessary items to all of us. Namo namaha, Namo namaha, Namo namaha to Raja (King) Prithu.
