Just before going to “How to gain (accumulate) Punya Karma (good deeds) in Hinduism | Good Karma and Bad Karma meaning with examples | How do Hindus increase good Karma? | How do you get Karma in Hinduism? | What increases Karma? | How do you clear bad Karma?“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

Karma (deeds) is a very big word to understand! Starting from Lord Sri Brahma Deva (expect Lord Sri Vishnu Hari and Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi), all are affected with this Karma.

We will gain fruits as per our Karmas. These Karmas may be from our past lives or present life too. In Hindi you must have heard, “jaise karni, waise bharni (As you sow, so you shall reap)”. This gives very good meaning about the Karma.

If we do good Karmas (deeds), we will gain fruits as per our good Karmas (deeds). If we do incorrect (bad) Karmas, then also we will be get fruits as per our bad Karmas.

Only remedy is, we need to do good Karmas (deeds) starting from today & now itself. Forget about all the ‘bad things’ done in our past. At least now, we need to do good and positive things (Karmas) in our life.

Also with this, we need to know more and more “jnana” (divine knowledge) about Lord Sri Vishnu as instructed in the Sanatana Dharma Shastras (Hindu Texts).

We need to chant his different names continuously and regularly. We need to serve our parents. We need to look after our family correctly.

We need to serve people, even though we don’t know anything about them. We need to serve the sadhus, sajjanas, needy people, correct Brahmanas (Brahmins) etc. throughout our lives.

If we start doing all these divine things from today and now itself, definitely we will start to get good fruits for all our ‘good Karmas’ (deeds).

In this post you will learn about “Good Karmas (deeds) and Bad Karmas” as per Hindu Shastras (Texts) and in general also.

But both will be as per Hinduism. First let us know according to Hindu texts and then let us know in general.

List of Punya Karma (good deeds) in Hinduism is as given below:

One Namaskaram : One namaskaram is equal to 16 times punya of 1000 crore teertha yatras (pilgrimage places) or 100 crore vratas (vrats) (spiritual rituals as per Hinduism).

One Pradakshina : One PradakshiNa / Parikrama (rotating / circumambulation around Lord Sri Vishnu and other Devatas / Demigods)  is equal to 1000 Ashvamedha yagna Punya (good deeds).

One Hari Naivedya Bhakshana : One ‘Hari / Vishnu naivedya Bhakshana’ (sacred food of Lord Sri Vishnu / bhog) is equal to 1000 crore ‘chandraayaNa vrata Punya’ (doing ritual related to vrat).

One day of Hari Smaranam : One day of ‘Hari smaranam’ (chanting Lord Sri Vishnu name / names) is equal to 1000 years off ‘Pooja Punya’.

Vishnu Padodaka Prokshana : ‘Vishnu padodaka prokshaNa’ (sprinkling of Lord Sri Vishnu’s foot / Ganges sacred water) is equal to 1000 crore ‘Teertha snana Punya’ (good deeds of taking bath at different divine rivers).

One Ekadashi fasting : One Ekadashi Upavasa (fasting) is equal to 16 times punya of 1000 ‘Ashvamedha yagna’ or ‘10,000 Vajapeya yagna’ (a ritual named Vajapeya).

Shaligrama theertha Prashana : ‘Shaligrama theertha prashana’ (drinking of sacred water of the Shaligrama) is equal to ‘1000 crore teertha yatra Punya’ (visiting pilgrimage places).

Apart from the above said divine things, one can also accumulate good Karma (good deeds) by following and performing the following works (Karmas):

Good thoughts, will get good Karma : A beneficial idea and action arising from a simple thought of helping others will lead to good Karma (deeds).

At the same time, it is important to remember that ideas and actions in themselves are not purely beneficial but must be accompanied by the virtue of good and pure thoughts.

You are accountable for your own actions : Responsibility for an action, be it a good action or a bad action, you are fully responsible for those actions.

Hence, it is proved that karma has a lot to do with cause and effect. Whether it is just a thought of the mind or an action done physically and mentally, you must be responsible for all those actions.

Chant Lord Sri Vishnu different names : Chanting or doing Japa (स्मरणं) (जप) one or more names of Lord Sri Vishnu can earn you abundant good Karmas (deeds).

Chanting Lord Sri Vishnu’s names Hanuman, Gajendra, Dhruva, Prahlada, Vibhishana, Sugriva, Draupadi Devi, King Ambarisha, Akrura, etc. etc. etc. havegained infinite number of benefits, both material and spiritual.

Show courtesy : In our day-to-day busy lives of crazy work schedules, peer pressure and trying to win the rat race, we have completely forgotten to maintain those small good things in our lives.

Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) always instructs us to do things like: providing food to the needy, helping the elderly, supporting the education of poor children, feeding the birds and animals, etc.

Such actions that come naturally with the thought of sincerely helping someone will help you generate good and great Karmas. Seeing you do all these, your children will also learn these basic things in their early life itself.

Make someone feel comfortable and happy : Perhaps the greatest tragedy of our time is that we are all too selfish. We always put ourselves ahead of everyone else; we almost pay no attention to the other person’s needs.

But, if you want to earn good Karmas (deeds), you change yourself today and now, before time wins the race. You don’t have to give any big gifts to needy people. If you meet their small needs, that is more than enough for them.

For example giving a seat to an elderly person in bus and train, if you allow an ambulance to pass, if someone has fallen down and you give support, etc. will earn good karmas (deeds) in your life.

Visit pilgrimage places regularly : Sanatana Dharma Shastras (Hindu Texts) gives high importance of going to ‘tirtha yatras’ (visiting pilgrimage places) and doing darshan of Lord Sri Vishnu and other Devatas (Demigods.)

Accept prasadam and tirtha (theertham / tirth) of each pilgrimage place and try to give the same (prasadam and teertham) to people around you. Lord Sri Vishnu and other deities (gods) love it and bless you eternal peace.

Let go of your ego completely : Ego (pride) is your greatest enemy. The more egoistic you are, the more distant you are from Lord Sri Vishnu and other deities (gods).

The less ego you have, Lord Sri Vishnu and other Devatas (Demigods) will love you more and automatically you will earn more good Karmas (deeds) in your life.

Hear about Sanatana Dharma : Find a good and right Guru and under his guidance, you should know about Lord Sri Vishnu and other deities (deities).

You have to be very careful while choosing a Guru. Because if you choose wrong Guru, you will get wrong knowledge about Hindu texts. This will lead to bad Karmas (deeds). So, be very careful while choosing Guru.

The suggested Hindu Texts to know about are: Srimad Bhagavatam, Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharata, Ramayana, all the 18 Puranas, etc.

Serve your parents : In Ramayana Lord Sri Vishnu in his avatar of Lord Sri Rama served his parents King Dasharatha, Mother Kausalya, Mother Sumitra and Mother Kaikeyi.

Similarly in Mahabharata and Srimad Bhagavatam Lord Sri Vishnu in his Lord Sri Krishna avatar serves his parents Vasudeva and Devaki and also serves his foster parents Nanda Maharaj and Yashoda.

Respect elders wholeheartedly : It is given great importance in Sanatana Dharma. Respect your elders. Sometimes you may be right and your elders may be wrong, but you should respect your elders.

Because, they don’t do bad things on purpose. They always wants you to be good and prosperous. Sometimes something goes wrong and they may find fault with you.

But you should know that they do not wish you harm. They always want you to improve in your life and therefore you should respect each and every one of their words and actions.

    • Namaste Akshaya Narayanan,

Karma is a very big word to understand.

Sir I want to ask one thing I am chanting daily Lord vishnu slokas in the form of ramayana and srimad bagavatha puranam slokas daily in my resident . So that I can get relief from karma know sir?

    • Dear Akshaya Narayanan,

      Thanks for contacting me again.
Yes, definitely that will help. But you should always remember that, you should be doing this for a long term to get the best outputs. You have to do daily and consistently.
Just like a student has to study through out the year to get good marks in the exam, we too need to chant Sri Hari names, learn about him more & more, etc to get best outputs.

If you need any further clarification, please let me know.

      Shubhamastu!
