Just before going to “King Shibi, dove and eagle (hawk) (birds) story | How did King Shibi protect dove from the hawk? | Why did the eagle demand the dove from King Shiby?“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

King Shibi parents names are : Ushinara (father) and Dṛṣadvatī (mother). | King Shibi son name is : Kapotaroma. | King Shibi story is given in : Mahabharata.

Two conditions of eagle (hawk) to King Shibi are : (1) “O great King of Chandravansh (vamsha), King Shibi, I shall let the dove bird free, but on condition that if equal amount of flesh from your body is offered to me as food.”

(2) “O great Raja (King) Shibi, if you drop a single tear out of your eyes means, I shall be forced not to accept your flesh as my food.”

Before starting the story of the Great Raja (King) Shibi, first let us know few important points of this Great Raja (King) Shibi as given below:

1. Raja (King) Shibi belonged the great vamsha (vansh) (family) of the ‘Bharata Chakravarti’ (King Bharat).

2. Raja (King) Shibi was in the great family of the Chandra vamsha (vansh) (family tree) (Lunar Dynasty).

3. Raja (King) Shibi’s father name was Ushirava. King Shibi was a dharmishtta (righteous), satyavaadi (truthful), nyaayavaadi (always sincere) and always was a follower of what he had promised earlier.

As said above King Shibi comes in the lineage of ‘Bharata Chakravarti’ (Emperor Bharat).

King Shibi was very famous for his satyavaada (truthfulness), nyaayavaada (always sincere), and always was a follower of ‘Sanatana Dharma’ and what he has promised earlier.

Svayam (direcdtly) Lord Sri Yama Deva (Dharmaraja) himself decided to test the capability, mind power, character etc. of King Shibi as per the epic Mahabharata.

Once when the King Shibi was alone on the terrace of his palace, he sees a dove bird coming towards him at great speed.

At the same time an eagle was flying behind the dove bird to catch that dove bird. Thus to escape from the clutches of the chasing eagle, the dove bird made every effort to hide somewhere immediately.

Upon seeing the King Shibi on the terrace, the frightened dove bird took shelter near King Shibi himself.

The frightened dove bird said, “O King, save my life, save me from this eagle, who is trying kill me and to eat me. I have come under your refuge and shelter, please save me.”

(Note : King Shibi had earlier taken vow to save anyone who comes under his refuge and shelter.)

Thus the weak and deprived dove bird could not be exploited by the cunningness and strong power of the eagle (hawk). However, this was a new experience for King Shibi.

Will King Shibi be able to save this frightened dove bird from the clutches of the cunning and very strong bird eagle? Let us know, what will happen next?

Thinking what to do next for a while, the great King Shibi decided that even trees, animals, birds etc. also require protection and help similarly to the humans.

Thus, finally the great King Shibi said, “Have no fear my dear bird. That eagle (hawk) would not be able to even touch your single feather. Just relax and feel peace and don’t worry at all”.

Saying so, the great King Shibi readied himself to face the quickly approaching eagle (hawk).

The eagle came in front of the King Shibi and said, “O my dear King, you have hidden my food, my prey. Please release that dove bird immediately, so that I can appease my hunger.”

The dharmaatma (righteous) King Shibi saw no incorrectness in the point of eagle’s demand.

Now, King Shibi faced a huge and peculiar dilemma of protecting the dove bird, and similarly at the same time not to deprive the eagle’s rightful food and prey.

King Shibi decided to resolve this peculiar issue by offering the eagle equal amount of meat. But now what, this eagle insisted on having his prey itself (dove bird) as his food and nothing else.

Sometime later with all the efforts and long discussion the eagle agreed to set the dove bird free on two conditions.

Thus that eagle (hawk) said, “O great King of Chandravansh (vamsha), King Shibi, I shall let the dove bird free, but on condition that if equal amount of flesh from your body is offered to me as food.”

King Shibi without any second thought accepted this condition of the eagle (hawk).

King Shibi thought that a piece or two of flesh from his own body would not kill him (King Shibi) and thus the life of the dove bird in his refuge and shelter would also be saved.

With this, King Shibi was happy that he has saved a weak dove bird from the clutches of the strong bird eagle (hawk).

Thus continuing, eagle then put his second condition as given below:

“O great Raja (King) Shibi, if you drop a single tear out of your eyes means, I shall be forced not to accept your flesh as my food.”

For this, Raja (King) Shibi agreed and asked his servants to bring knives and the weighing machine (scale with two plates).

On one plate of the weighing machine the dove bird was kept and on the other side of the weighing machine flesh from the right thigh of King Shibi was kept.

But shockingly and surprisingly, the plate with the dove bird always weighed more even though an additional flesh of King Shibi was added every time.

Thus, King Shibi had to cut almost whole of his right half thigh as food to the eagle (hawk). But still the weight on the two plates could not be weighed equally.

At this very distressful time, just a drop of tear came out of the left eye of the King Shibi.

Thus, the eagle objected to the King Shibi by saying like this:

“O great King Shibi, now I cannot accept the food from you which is been given in distress and pain. The eye drop in your eye shows that you are unhappy and painful. Thus, give me my prey back and you shall regain your normal health.”

But, King Shibi was a great dharmaatma (follower of Sanatana Dharma). He won’t go against dharma.

Thus with a faint smile on his lips, King Shibi said like this:

“Please hold on O my dear eagle. My left eye is not crying out of agony or pain. This is a tear of joy and happiness. Now, my left half of the body will also be used to honour the words I have given to you.”

“On the other hand, if only my right part of my body had satisfied you, the left half of my body would have been denied this great opportunity of sacrifice. Thus, O my dear friend eagle, the left eye droplet is out of joy and not of agony and pain.”

This great and ultimate sacrifice of King Shibi was of the highest order and was unparalleled in the history of the Great Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism).

The eagle and the dove bird disappeared and in their places stood the Lord Sri Yama Deva (eagle) and the King of Svarga Loka, that is, Lord Sri Indra Deva (dove bird).

All the Devatas (Demigods) from the sky showered flowers, sprinkled perfumes, and praised the great King Shibi.

All the Devatas (Demigods) granted many many boons to this dharmaatma (follower of Sanatana Dharma) and noble King Shibi.

Finally, King Shibi had clearly passed the ultimate test to uphold Dharma, a true duty of every King on earth.

It is said that this King Shibi ruled for many a years and after his death, King Shibi went directly to upper planets to enjoy the ultimate fruits of his dharma and karma.

What does the story of King Shibi teaches : In this Kali Yuga these kinds of dharmatma (follower of Sanatana Dharma) Kings (politicians) can’t be found at all.

Kali of Kali Yuga has entered into everybody’s mind, body and aatma / soul and thus it’s not at all easy for people who live in this Kali Yuga to be as dharmatma as the great King Shibi.

In our Shastras (Hindu Texts) it is said that: Satya / Krita Yuga, 99.99% of the living beings will follow the Great Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism).

(Please remember that this includes even the animals, plants, trees, insects, etc. etc. etc.)

Treya Yuga, 80% of the living beings will follow the Great Sanatana Dharma. Dvapara Yuga, 40% of the living beings will follow the Great Sanatana Dharma.

Kali Yuga not even 0.1% of the living beings will follow the Great Sanatana Dharma.

But don’t lose your heart, still that 0.099% living beings are following the Great Sanatana Dharma.

Because of these types of humans we are still getting rain, food etc. etc. etc. Otherwise just imagine what would had happened to this world?

If you want to do dharma and follow dharma, simply learn the Great Sanatana Dharma and teach the Great Sanatana Dharma to other as much of possible to your best capabilities.

This will help us in getting close towards Lord Sri Vishnu (Rama) (Krishna) (Hari) and finally to get moksha / mukti (a permanent place in Vaikuntha).
