Just before going to “Which Lord Vishnu names are associated with rivers | Which river is associated with Vishnu? | How is Ganga related to Lord Vishnu? | Which river is associated with Vishnu the preserver and protector“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

Lord Sri Vishnu is known as ‘sarva-vyapi’ (सर्वव्यापि / ಸರ್ವವ್ಯಾಪಿ / sarvavyāpi) and also called as ‘antaryaami’ (अंतर्यामि / ಅಂತರ್ಯಾಮಿ / antaryāmi).

This means he is present everywhere and in everything (sarva-vyapi – sarva = everywhere, vyapi = present) and as ‘antaryaami’ (antaryaami – antar = inside everyone, yaami = present) as inside everyone.

Similarly, Lord Sri Vishnu is also present inside every river in some or the other form(s). Below given is a list of Lord Sri Vishnu’s different names associated with different rivers, expect ‘Vasudevaadi’ (वासुदेवादि) (vāsudēvavādi).

[Here Vasudevaadi (वासुदेवादि) (vāsudēvavādi) means, except Vasudeva (वासुदेव) (vāsudēva) and others like Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha all other river names given here are associated with Lord Sri Vishnu’s different names.]

List of the Vishnu names associated with rivers are as given below:

1. Godavari – Narayana | 2. Ganga – Madhava | 3. Vapi – Govinda | 4. Narmada – Vishnu | 5. Manasa – Madhusudana |

6. Kumudavati – Trivikrama | 7. Chandra Pushkarani – Vamana | 8. Bhimarathi – Sridhara | 9. Sarovara – Hrishikesha | 10. Saraswati – Padmanabha |

11. Sarita – Damodara | 12. Pushkarani – Purushottama | 13. Swami Pushkarani – Adhokshaja | 14. Bhava Nashani – Narasimha | 15. Tataka – Achyuta |

16. Malahari – Janardhana | 17. Devakatha – Upendra | 18. Kalindi – Hari | 19. Krishnaveni – Krishna | 20. Pinakani – Keshava |

These below four names of Lord Vishnu is not associated with any river(s):

1. Sankarshana | 2. Vasudeva | 3. Pradyumna | 4. Aniruddha |

How is Ganga related to Lord Vishnu : Goddess Ganga takes birth from the foot of Lord Vishnu and thus she is the daughter of Lord Vishnu.

Ganga is known as ‘Vishnu Padodbhavi’, that is, she is the one who takes birth from the foot of Lord Vishnu and thus she is known as ‘Vishnu Padodbhavi’.

Here, Vishnu Padodbhavi = Vishnu + Padodbhavi = Lord Vishnu + taking birth from. This means, Ganga takes birth from Lord Vishnu’s foot (pada).
