Just before going to “Sapta matrikas (Mathas) (Seven mothers) names (mantra) with meaning (information)  | How many Matrikas are there? | What is the order of Sapta Matrika?“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) is highly amazing. We have meaning for each and every word and for each and every alphabet.

Starting from Vedas, Mahabharata, Ramayana etc. until the modern Puranas explains us everything, that is, how we should live? What should we eat? What should we drink? How we we need to talk? etc. everything is very clearly explained.

Someone who loves the Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) will always want to know more and more about Sanatana Dharma for a long period.

Similarly, our Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) Shastras (Hindu Texts) gives very good information about different mothers and motherhood.

First let us understand the meaning of the words ‘sapta matrika’. Here sapta = seven and matrika = mothers.

According to Bharatiya Sanatana Dharma / Vedic Scripture we have seven mothers. Let us know who they are. From our śāstra / shastra (Hindu Texts), it is also said that there are seven mothers.

Sapta Matrikas mantra is as given below (In Sanskrit, Kannada and English scripts):

ādau mātā guru-patni brāhmaṇi rāja-patnikā | dhēnūr dhātrī tathā pr̥thvī saptaitā mātaraḥ ||

List of Sapta matrikas (Seven mothers) names (in order) with meaning is as given below:

1. Mata (Biological mother) : adau mata This means the mother who has given us the birth. The biological mother.

2. Guru Patni (Teacher’s wife) : guru-patniThe wife of spiritual master or teacher. Means one whose Guru’s wife is our second mother.

3. Brahmani (Brahmin’s wife) : brāhmaṇi – The wife of a brāhmaṇa (brahmin). Means the wife (braahmani) of any brahmana (brahmin).

4. Raja Patni (King’s wife) : rāja-patnikā – The queen, she is also mother. Means the wife of the king.

5. Dhenu (Mother cow) : dhenu – This means cow, that is, any cow for a matter is our mother. That’s why we give so much importance to the mother cow (Gau Maata).

6. Dhatri (Caretaker) : dhātrī – This means a caretaker (E.g., Nurse). If we are not well and if somebody helps us in healing us, then that lady is also our mother.

7. Prithvi (Mother earth) : tathā pṛthvī – As well as the mother earth. Earth is mother because she is giving us so many things, fruits, flowers, grains etc. for us.

Let us respect, protect & love all our seven maatas / mothers and get their blessings to progress in Lord Sri Krishna Consciousness.

PS: tathaa: tathaa means ‘and’.
