Just before going to “Why we should not do anything without prior consent | Why it is important to ask permission before doing something? | Shankha and Likhita brothers story“, let us have some brief information.

Let’s understand this great knowledge by knowing one good story from our Hindu Shastras (Puranas / Texts).

Once upon a time, there were two brothers namely Shankha (elder) and Likhita (younger), who were Munis (Saints) and used to live in their respective ashramas (hermitages) on the banks of the river Bahuda.

One day, the younger brother, Likhita, went to the Shankha’s ashrama (hermitage) and on not finding his brother, sat under a mango tree.

Likhita started eating one of its mangoes, without taking the prior consent and permission of the owner of the tree (Shankha).

Shankha returned to his ashrama (hermitage) and found Likhita eating the mangoes. Shankha then told Likhita that, “one must never take the things which do not belong to them”.

Shankha said “You should have eaten it only after taking my prior consent and permission”.

Shankha further told Likhita to go to the King, Sudyumna, tell him the mistake he did and take the appropriate punishment, according to the ‘Danda-neeti-shastram’ (As per the rules and regulations of consent and permission).

Likhita adheres to the word of his brother and immediately goes to Sudyumna.

The King warmly welcomes the Muni (Saint) and upon being asked the reason for coming, Likhita tells what had happened and begs the King for punishment.

The King who knows all the ‘Dharma shastras’ (Rules and regulations as per Hinduism), replied that:

“O great Muni (Saint)! You leave all the pleasures of normal humans and do Tapas (Penance) for the welfare of everyone. How can I give you punishment?”.

Likhita replies saying that a King must never deviate from his duty and hence, must punish him.

The King accepts and orders that Likhita’s hands must be cut-off (Following ‘Danda-neeti’ / As per the rules and regulations of consent and permission).

Likhita then returned to Shankha after experiencing the punishment. Shankha was very happy to see his brother and said:

“O Putra (son)! you did a good thing. Because of you our entire vamsham (lineage) will be saved. Go and and dip in the Bahuda river and do Deva (God), Muni (Saint), Pitru (Ancestors) Tarpanam and come.”

“Surapanam (Drinking alcohol), Guru Bharyaa Vyamoham (Wanting infatuation attraction towards Guru’s wife), Vipra-hatya (Killing a Brahmin),”

“Vipra-Daana-apaharanam (Stealing a Brahmin’s belongings) and having Sneham (Friendship) with these four kinds of people are the Pancha-mahaa-paatakas (5 great sins).”

“You became punyatma (A holy person) because you experienced Dandanam (punishment) from Raja (King). Now go.”

Likhita immediately goes and takes a dip in the Bahuda Nadi (River) and to his surprise sees that he gets back his hands.

Knowing that his hands came back due to the power of Shankha, he asked his brother that if he has so much power why did he ask him to go to the King for punishment, instead he himself could have given it.

The elder brother Shankha said that everyone must do his / her own duty. Our duty is to do Tapas (Penance), Homas (A fire ritual), Yagnas for the benefit of the society and the King’s duty is to punish the bad.

Hence, he said, he had no right to punish his younger brother. This story is not just another story or myth.

But this story was told by Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa Ji (An avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu) to ‘Dharmapaalaka Dharmaraja’ (Yudhisthira – Someone who follows the laws correctly) when he was worried that all relatives, friends etc. are killed in the Kurukshetra (Mahabharata war).

Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa Ji says Dushtas (The wicked people) must be punished. Duty of the King is to do that.

So, there is nothing wrong in Yudhishthira doing the Mahabharata Yuddham (war), to kill the bad.

PS : In Kali Yuga only the power of Kali (कली) will be at the highest peak. Bad people will win over good people, negativity will surpass the Positiveness.

People who don’t have the 10% of the capability will be the Kings. Only people with the thoughts of corruption will be the leaders.

Vybhicharam (Prostitution), Pranaharanam (Killing), Stree Vyamoham (Getting attracted towards women), Dhana Lobham (Wanting more and more money), Atyacharam (Ravishment), etc will be the spread all over the world.

Mlechhas (Who do lawless work and who eat Cow’s meat) will win over the Vipras (Good people).

Irreligious people will lord this Earth. Many Dharma (religion) conversions will happen. Adharmis (Someone who don’t follow Dharma) think themselves as Dharmis (Someone who Dharma).

Only way to come out of this is to do ‘Bhagavan Sankirtanam’ (Singing Lord Sri Vishnu’s songs), Srimann Narayana Naamasmaranam (Chanting names of Lord Sri Narayana / Rama / Krishna / Hari).

OM NAMO NARAYANAYA or any of the Lord Sri Vishnu’s name(s) is the only path for Mukti and Moksha (liberation).
