Valmiki role in Ramayana : Valmiki Maharishi played a very significant role in Ramayana, that is, in Uttara Kanda, the last chapter of epic Ramayana.

According to Valmiki Ramayana, Lord Sri Rama send Goddess Sri Sita Devi to forest. Goddess Sri Sita Devi finds refuge in Valmiki Rishi’s ashram, where she gives birth to twin boys Lava and Kusha.

How Valmiki became saint from a robber : In the great Maharishi Bhrigu family, where Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi took her first avatar as ‘Sridevi’, a Maharishi by name Sumati was born.

(This is her first avatar of Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi, but she is always there with Lord Sri Vishnu from the unknown age and time.)

Sumati was always immersed in ‘Bhagavat-dhyanam’ (Meditation on God). His wife also had an impeccable character and used to provide as much co-operation as she could to Sumati in his tapas.

Once when she (wife of Sumati) was pregnant, Sumati was deeply involved with his tapas (penance) and she did not want to disturb him.

She (wife) decided to make her own arrangements for the living and help Sumati in his tapas. Once she went to a forest in search of fruits for food.

Due to fate, a gang of robbers saw her, noticed that she was a pregnant and was searching for food.

Out of sympathy they gave some fruits to her, which they had, which they robbed from somewhere. She accepted the fruits and happily returned to the ashram and fed her children and herself.

In course of time, she delivered a baby, who they named as ‘Agni Sharma’. As the kid grew up, Sumati noticed that the kid possessed very faint ‘chaurya gunas’ (Qualities of thief).

Sumati did not understand from where Agni Sharma picked up these habits.

With his divya-drushti (Divine eyes) he saw that Agni Sharma’s mother ate fruits that had chaurya dosham (Qualities of thief) when she was pregnant.

Agni Sharma was not able to learn the Vedas well too. Slowly he grew old and he was married. Once a great drought came and living became difficult for Agni Sharma and his family.

Due to fate, Agni Sharma met some robber gang in forests and he joined them. He used to earn by robbing money and food everyday.

One day Agni Sharma saw Saptarishis travelling by and he thought of robbing them too. Saptarishis asked him “being born in Bhrigu amily, why are you doing such paapa karyas (The actions of sin)?”

Agni Sharma replied “what is wrong, what is right. Is it not my duty to feed my family?”.

Atri Maharishi (tapatreya rahitaH atri / He is the one who doesn’t has the problems), the Guru of Lord Sri Dattatreya, the father of Durvasa Muni and one of the Brahma manasa putras replied:

“O Agni Sharma! Ask your family if they will share any of your sins, else the immense sins must be experienced by you only”.

Agni Sharma said he never asked this, but hoped that his family would share part of his burden of sins.

Agni Sharma wanted to go to his family and enquire about this. Saptarishis said they would wait for him till he comes back.

Agni Sharma asked his father. Father replied that “you are responsible for your own karma”. Agni Sharma asked his mother. Mother said “did we anytime tell you earn by robbing)?”.

Then Agni Sharma asked his wife. She replied “as you know in our Bharatiya Kalyanam (Indian marriages) we say ‘dharmecha, arthecha, kamecha, naticharitavyaaiti naticharami’ – so this does not include Moksham.

Hence bad deeds and good deeds, Kaivalyam (Divine liberation / Vaikuntha) are separate accounts! Of course being your wife, I will get share of Punyas (Good deeds) from you”.

Agni Sharma came back to Saptarishis and told them that no one can take the burden of sins from him.

Thus, Saptarishis replied “then all this entire sins will fall on your head. Is it not?” Agni Sharma was very remorseful. Agni Sharma fell on Saptarshi’s feet and begged them to show him some way of saving himself.

Saptarishis, seeing that Agni Sharma had true repentance, gave Agni Sharma the advice of the great “Shiva Panchaaksharii mantram”.

They asked him to do the mantra japam (Meditate) with utmost concentration till they come back. Agni Sharma exactly did as the Saptarshis said.

After 12 years the Saptarshis returned and saw the Agni Sharma who was glowing with divya tejas (The Divine Splendor) and surrounded by huge Valmikams (ant-hills).

They told Agni Sharma that he became a blessed and ask him to go to the great Ganges and continue his tapas.

Agni sharma did as directed by the Saptarshis and did installation) of the ‘Valmiikesvara Lingam’ and continued tapas (Penance) for Lord Shiva.

Shankara bhagavan (Lord Shiva) appeared before him and said:

“You will be henceforth called Valmiki and you will become the Aadi kavi (First poet) and write the great ‘Sri Rama divya katha’ (Lord Sri Rama’s divine story) with ‘Gayatri mantra niyamam / rule’”.

Valmiki then went to Chitrakuta hill and built an ashramam (hermitage) near Tamasaa river.

Once Devarshi Narada (Naaram dadaati – he is the one who gives Gnyaanam / Divine knowledge), the great Brahmarshi, came to Valmiki Maharishi’s ashramam (hermitage).

Valmiki Maharishi welcomed the great Brahmarshi and asked him:

“Who is the Divya purusha who is Shodasha-kalaa-paripurna / 16 arts perfectionist (This includes Dharmagnya, Satyasandha …)?” – Maharishi Narada replied:

“Lord Sri Rama. He is the son of our King Dasharatha, who is now the king of Ayodhya. Words in Samskrutam are not enough to describe His sadgunas / Virtue.”

“Lord Sri Rama is a Gunavanta (Virtuous man), Dhairyavanta (Brave man), Paraakramashaali (Very powerful man), Aishvaryavanta (Wealthy person), Satyashaali (Always talks truth),… Shodasha-kalaa-paripurna / 16 arts perfectionist.”

“In addition to these, Lord Sri Rama has many uttama purusha lakshanaas (Traits of Good human) –

Prashaanta chittam (A calm mind), Suprasanna rupam (Charming character), Sundara mandahaasa sphurita sundara vadanaaravindam, Smitapuurvaavibhaashii, Mrudu – puurvantu bhaashate (he only greets before the others do)….”

“Lord Sri Rama will never utter a parusha vaakyam (Negative words) — not even when Ravana comes before Him. He always has Hrudaya poorvaka mandahaasam (Divine charming person).”

“He will never forget even one small upakaaram (Earlier help by others), He will never remember any apakaars (Immorality) done to Him (Shatamapi apakaaraanaam vismarati).”

“Lord Sri Rama is a Buddhimaan (Highly intelligent), Madhuraa bhaashii (Uses very sweet words), Priyamvadah (He loves all), Viiryavaan (A superhero) — but never sees Himself and has ahankar (Egotistical person), he has great Vinayam (Good gesture).”

“Lord Sri Rama is an adarsha purusha (The ideal man). He has the 39 gunas (qualities) of Paramaatma (God) and in addition has Brahmanyata, Sharanyataadi mahaagunas”.

Valmiki Maharishi then sang the Divya Ramayana Katha (Story of Divine Ramayana).
