Just before going to “Sri Raghavendra Ashtakshara stotram by Sri Jagannatha Dasa (Dasaru) in Sanskrit (Hindi), Kannada, English“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.
Let us start by taking his name: श्री राघवेन्द्राय नमः / ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರಾಯ ನಮಃ / śrī rāghavēndrāya namaḥ / Sri Raghavendraya Namah.
Just before going to the “Sri Raghavendra Ashtakshara stotram”, now, let us know the inner meaning of the name ‘राघवेंद्र / ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರ / Raghavendra’ and also the greatness of Sri Raghavendra Swamy.
रा / ರಾ / Ra = This means Bhagavan Sri Rama, Bhagavan Sri Narayana’s ‘Narayana Ashtakshari’ mantra, that is, “Om Namo Naaraayanaaya”) and also this means Sri Hanuman.
Let us understand how the Hanuman name is associated with the name of Bhagavan Sri Rama name:
यत्र यत्र रघुनाथ कीर्तनं तत्र तत्र कृतमस्तकाञ्जलिम् |
भाष्पवारि परिपूर्ण लोचनं मारुतिं नमत राक्षसान्तकम् ||
ಯತ್ರ ಯತ್ರ ರಘುನಾಥ ಕೀರ್ತನಂ ತತ್ರ ತತ್ರ ಕೃತಮಸ್ತಕಾಂಜಲಿಂ |
ಭಾಷ್ಪವಾರಿ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ಲೋಚನಂ ಮಾರುತಿಂ ನಮತ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಂತಕಂ ||
yatra yatra raghunātha kīrtanaṁ tatra tatra kr̥tamastakān̄jaliṁ |
bhāṣpavāri paripūrṇa lōcanaṁ mārutiṁ namata rākṣasāntakaṁ ||
Meaning: Wherever Lord Sri Raghunath’s (Lord Sri Rama) sankirtana (Divinely singing the greatness of Bhagavan Sri Rama) takes place with joyous tears is his (devotee) eyes with folded hands over his (devotee) head.
At that each and every place the terror to Rakshasas (Demons) is always present. Thus we should always do namaste (Divine salutations) to our beloved and Sri Rama bhakta’s greatest devotee hanuman.
A big divine thing we should know that, Sri Raghavendra Swamy before entering into Brindavana had performed divine penance for 12 meditating upon Sri Panchamukhi Hanuman (five face Hanuman).
Now coming back to the meaning of the name Raghavendra:
अघ / ಅಘ / agha = This means evil, suffering, sin, grief etc. वें / ವೆಂ / ven = This means ‘ahankara’ (Ego / Sin). Even the first letter of Bhagavan Sri Venkatesha has the same meaning. द्र / ದ್ರ / dra = Someone who dispel the evil from us.
Thus the full meaning of the name ‘Raghavendra’ is, He (Sri Raghavendra Swamy) is so great and divine that, He (Sri Raghavendra Swamy) has the capability to end all the evil, suffering, sin, grief etc. from us and also He (Sri Raghavendra Swamy) is someone who has all the qualities of reducing our Ego / Sins.
(This could happen only if we have full faith and devotion towards Sri Raghavendra Swamy, Sri Hanuman and Sri Rama).
Thus, by chanting the divine name of Sri Raghavendra Swamy with full faith and devotion, we will get all the benefits of reciting the Divine names of both Bhagavan Sri Rama (Also Bhagavan Sri Venkateshwara) and Sri Hanuman who are present in Sri Raghavendra Swamy (Also known as Sri Rayaru).
Another meaning of the name Raghavendra: Raghavendra is the original name of Bhagavan Sri Rama.
Sri Rama is the center of attraction for the whole of the Surya Vamsha family, that is, the family of Raja Ikshvaku, Raja Raghu, Raja Mandhata, Raja Satya Harishchandra, Raja Sagara, Raja Dileepa, Raja Bhagiratha, Raja Ambarisha, Raja Dasharatha, etc.
Here Raghavendra = Raagha (राघ) + Vendra (वेंद्र) = Raghu Vamsha (Family) + Indra.
Thus the whole meaning of the name Raghavendra is, He (Sri Rama / Raghavendra) is someone who is the center of attraction / head / most valuable / King etc. of the Raghu family.
Sri Rama / Raghavendra is like the Indra (Not the Indra Deva) of the Raghu family. Here Indra means not the Indra Deva, but a great person / most attractive person / most valuable person / head / King etc.
Now let us take the “Sri Raghavendra Ashtakshara stotram”:
Sri Raghavendra Ashtakshara stotram by Sri Jagannatha Dasa (Dasaru) in Sanskrit (Hindi) is as given below:
|| अथ श्री राघवेंद्र अष्टाक्षर स्तोत्रं – श्री जगन्नाथ दास विरचित ||
गुरुराजाष्टाक्षरं स्यात् महापातकनाशनम् |
एकैकेमक्षरं चात्र सर्व काम्यार्थ सिद्धिदम् || १ ||
रकारोच्चारण मात्रेण रोगहानिर्न संशयः |
घकारेण बलं पुष्टिः आयुः तेजश्च वर्धते || २ ||
वकारेणात्र लभते वांछितार्थान्न संशयः |
द्रकारणाघराशिस्तु द्राव्यते द्रुतमेव हि || ३ ||
यकारेण यमाद्बाधो वार्यते नात्र संशयः |
नकारेण नरेंद्राणां पदमाप्नोति मानवः || ४ ||
मकारेणैव माहेंद्र मैश्वर्यं याति मानवः |
गुरोर्नाम्नाश्च माहात्म्यं अपूर्वं परमाद्भुतम् || ५ ||
तन्नाम स्मरणादेव सर्वाभिष्टं प्रसिध्यति |
तस्मान्नित्यं पठेद् भक्त्या गुरुपादरतस्सदा || ६ ||
श्री राघवेंद्राय नमः इत्याष्टाक्षर मंत्रतः |
सर्वांन्कामनवाप्नोति नात्र कार्या विचारणा || ७ ||
अष्टोत्तर शतावृत्तिं स्तोत्रस्यास्य करोति यः |
तस्य सर्वार्थ सिद्धिस्यात् गुरुराज प्रसादतः || ८ ||
एतदष्टाक्षर स्यात्र माहात्म्यं वेत्ति कः पुमान् |
पठनादेव सर्वार्थ सिद्धिर्भवति नान्यथा || ९ ||
स्वामिना राघवेंद्राख्य गुरुपादाब्ज सेविना |
कृतमष्टाक्षर स्तोत्रं गुरु प्रीतिकरं शुभम् || १० ||

|| ಅಥ ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರ ಅಷ್ಟಾಕ್ಷರ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಂ – ಶ್ರೀ ಜಗನ್ನಾಥ ದಾಸ ವಿರಚಿತ ||
ಗುರುರಾಜಾಷ್ಟಾಕ್ಷರಂ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ ಮಹಾಪಾತಕನಾಶನಮ್ |
ಏಕೈಕಮಕ್ಷರಂ ಚಾತ್ರ ಸರ್ವಕಾಮ್ಯಾರ್ಥ ಸಿದ್ಧಿದಮ್ || ೧ ||
ರಕಾರೋಚ್ಚಾರಣಮಾತ್ರೇಣ ರೋಗಹಾನಿರ್ನ ಸಂಶಯಃ |

ವಕಾರೇಣಾತ್ರ ಲಭತೇ ವಾಂಛಿತಾರ್ಥಾನ್ನ ಸಂಶಯಃ|
ದ್ರಕಾರೇಣಾಘರಾಶಿಸ್ತು ದ್ರಾವ್ಯತೇ ದ್ರುತಮೇವ ಹಿ || ೩ ||
ಯಕಾರೇಣ ಯಮಾದ್ಬಾಧೋ ವಾರ್ಯತೇ ನಾತ್ರ ಸಂಶಯಃ |
ನಕಾರೇಣ ನರೇಂದ್ರಾಣಾಂ ಪದಮಾಪ್ನೋತಿ ಮಾನವಃ || ೪ ||
ಮಕಾರೇಣೈವ ಮಾಹೇಂದ್ರಮೈಶ್ವರ್ಯಂ ಯಾತಿ ಮಾನವಃ |
ಗುರೋರ್ನಾಮ್ನಾಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾತ್ಮ್ಯಂ ಅಪೂರ್ವಂ ಪರಮಾದ್ಭುತಮ್ || ೫ ||
ತನ್ನಾಮಸ್ಮರಣಾದೇವ ಸರ್ವಾಭಿಷ್ಟಂ ಪ್ರಸಿಧ್ಯತಿ |
ತಸ್ಮಾನ್ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಪಠೇದ್ಭಕ್ತ್ಯಾ ಗುರುಪಾದರತಸ್ಸದಾ || ೬ ||
ಶ್ರೀರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರಾಯ ನಮಃ ಇತ್ಯಾಷ್ಟಾಕ್ಷರಮಂತ್ರತಃ |
ಸರ್ವಾನ್ಕಾಮಾನವಾಪ್ನೋತಿ ನಾತ್ರ ಕಾರ್ಯಾ ವಿಚಾರಣಾ || ೭ ||
ಅಷ್ಟೋತ್ತರಶತಾವೃತ್ತಿಂ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಯ ಕರೋತಿ ಯಃ |
ತಸ್ಯ ಸರ್ವಾರ್ಥಸಿದ್ಧಿಸ್ಯಾತ್ ಗುರುರಾಜಪ್ರಸಾದತಃ || ೮ ||
ಏತದಷ್ಟಾಕ್ಷರಸ್ಯಾತ್ರ ಮಹಾತ್ಮ್ಯಂ ವೇತ್ತಿ ಕಃ ಪುಮಾನ್ |
ಪಠನಾದೇವ ಸರ್ವಾರ್ಥಸಿದ್ಧಿರ್ಭವತಿ ನಾನ್ಯಥಾ || ೯ ||
ಸ್ವಾಮಿನಾ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರಾಖ್ಯ ಗುರುಪಾದಾಬ್ಜಸೇವಿನಾ |
ಕೃತಮಷ್ಟಾಕ್ಷರಸ್ತೋತ್ರಂ ಗುರುಪ್ರೀತಿಕರಂ ಶುಭಮ್ || ೧೦ ||

|| atha śrī rāghavēndra aṣṭākṣara stōtraṁ – śrī jagannātha dāsa viracita ||
gururājāṣṭākṣaraṁ syāt mahāpātakanāśanam |
ēkaikamakṣaraṁ cātra sarvakāmyārtha sid’dhidam || 1 ||
rakārōccāraṇamātrēṇa rōgahānirna sanśayaḥ |
ghakārēṇa balaṁ puṣṭiḥāyuḥ tējaśca vardhatē || 2 ||
vakārēṇātra labhatē vān̄chitārthānna sanśayaḥ|
drakārēṇāgharāśistu drāvyatē drutamēva hi || 3 ||
yakārēṇa yamādbādhō vāryatē nātra sanśayaḥ |
nakārēṇa narēndrāṇāṁ padamāpnōti mānavaḥ || 4 ||
makārēṇaiva māhēndramaiśvaryaṁ yāti mānavaḥ |
gurōrnāmnāśca mahātmyaṁ apūrvaṁ paramādbhutam || 5 ||
tannāmasmaraṇādēva sarvābhiṣṭaṁ prasidhyati |
tasmānnityaṁ paṭhēdbhaktyā gurupādaratas’sadā || 6 ||
Śrīrāghavēndrāya namaḥ ityāṣṭākṣaramantrataḥ |
sarvānkāmānavāpnōti nātra kāryā vicāraṇā || 7 ||
aṣṭōttaraśatāvr̥ttiṁ stōtrasyāsya karōti yaḥ |
tasya sarvārthasid’dhisyāt gururājaprasādataḥ || 8 ||
ētadaṣṭākṣarasyātra mahātmyaṁ vētti kaḥ pumān |
paṭhanādēva sarvārthasid’dhirbhavati nān’yathā || 9 ||
svāminā rāghavēndrākhya gurupādābjasēvinā |
kr̥tamaṣṭākṣarastōtraṁ guruprītikaraṁ śubham || 10 ||
