Lord Shiva was born from the ‘manasa’ (divine mind) of Sri Brahma Deva. While Sri Brahma Deva was born from the ‘nabhi’ (divine navel) of Bhagavan Sri Narayana.

Lord Shiva’s consort name is Sri Parvati Devi. Lord Shiva’s children names are Sri Ganesha and Sri Kartikeya.

The very important qualities of Lord Shiva are the sarpam / serpent Vasuki around his neck, the adorning crescent moon Sri Chandra Deva.

The most pious and holy river Ganga flowing from his matted hair (jata), the third eye (Trinetra) on his forehead, the Trishula / Trident, as his weapon, and the Damaru (A divine drum).

Now, let us move forward to know about “Why Lord Shiva is worshipped in Linga form | Who cursed Shiva as Linga | Story behind Shiva Linga“:

Once Maharishi Bhrigu went to Kailash (Kailasa) to test who is “Sarvottama” / “The Supreme” among Brahma-Vishnu-Maheshwara.

When he came to Lord Shiva, he saw that Lord Shiva did not even noticed him. Lord Shiva was sitting with Goddess Sri Parvati Devi privately. Lord Shiva completely ignored Bhrigu Maharshi.

Because of this, Bhrigu Maharshi got angry at Lord Shiva and he cursed him that Lord Shiva be worshipped only in the form of Linga.

That is why throughout the world, Lord Shiva is worshipped in Linga roopa (form) and not with his own svaroopa / deity form.

Here one must notice that Bhrigu Maharshi is very much inferior to Lord Shiva in the hierarchy of the Devatas (Demigods).

Just to respect Lord Sri Vishnu’s aagna / orders, that Lord Shiva ignored Bhrigu Maharshi and accepted the curse. This we can find in Padma Purana.

Hari sarvottama (supreme) pratipadana (exposition) by Lord Shiva is as given below:

1) When Bhrugu Maharshi came to test Lord Shiva, Lord Shiva ignored Brugu Maharshi completely and got the curse which enabled Brugu Maharshi to declare Lord Shiva is not sarvottama / supreme.

2)  Earlier Lord Shiva had taken the avatar of Durvasa Maharshi and Durvasa Maharshi established the supremacy of Ekadashi by just testing ‘Ambareesha Chakravarthi’ (King Ambarish).

Here also one must notice that King Ambareesha (Ambarish) is very much inferior to Durvasa Maharshi.

But, just he (Maharishi Durvasa) pretended to show the bhakti (devotion) of King Ambareesha (Ambarish) and importance of Ekadashi, this drama / vidambana was made.

Similar drama was also made during the Bhrigu Maharshi visit to Lord Shiva abode of Kailash (Kailasa).

3) Lord Sri Rudra Deva is called ‘Parama Vaishnava’. That is, when Lord Shiva was born as Shukacharya (Shuka Muni) (not Shukracharya), he did the prachara (publicity) of the great and divine Srimad Bhagavatam and Hari sarvottamatva / supremacy.

Shukacharya (Shuka Muni) preached Srimad Bhagavatam to King Parikshita (Parikshit) in just seven days and thus King Parikshit was able to attain the supreme abode of Vaikuntha.

4) Lord Shiva in his Shukacharya (Shuka Muni) avatar, has done the stotra (humns) of Lord Sri Vishnu’s ‘sankarshana roopa’ (form) which is available in ‘Panchama Skanda’ of Srimad Bhagavatam.

5) Lord Shiva in his Shukacharya (Shuka Muni) avatar preached Rudra Geeta to Prachetas, which is nothing but Hari sarvottamatva / supremacy.

6) Daksha Prajapati ignored Lord Shiva in the Yagna Sabha, when Daksha Prajapati was doing the yagna. Even at that time Lord Shiva was doing the ‘smaranam’ (chanting / remembering) of Lord Sri Vishnu.

7) Lord Shiva blesses many asuras (Demons) with great boons, which were all defeated by Lord Sri Vishnu with highest ease.

8) Lord Shiva preached Goddess Sri Uma Devi (Sri Parvati Devi) that ‘Sri Rama Naama’ (Lord Sri Rama name) is equal to ‘Sri Vishnu Sahasra Nama’.

Do remember, “Sri Raama Raama Raameti Rame Raame mano Rame, Sahasra Naama tat-tulyam Raama Naama Varaanane” in Sri Vishnu Sahasra Nama.

9) When Lord Shiva was born as Ashwathamacharya (Ashwatthama) (son of Dronacharya), he tried to kill King Parikshita before his birth itself.

But, Ashwatthama failed completely, which proves the supremacy of Lord Sri Vishnu (Lord Sri Krishna).

10) When Lord Shiva’s ‘parama bhakta’ (Great devotee) Ganta Gosha did the penance to Lord Shiva to give him Moksha,

Lord Shiva declared him that he can’t give Moksha (liberation). Only Lord Sri Vishnu can give the Moksha / Mukti / divine liberation and no one else.

11) When Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva) came to Lordd Sri Vishnu to have a look of ‘Mohini roopa’ (form) (an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu), Lord Shiva could not control himself on seeing the ‘Mohini roopa’ (form), there also Lord Shiva accepted his defeat.

11) When a demon named Bhasmasura tried to test the boon given by Lord Shiva, Lord Shiva ran and ran like a deer (too fast).

Then at the moment Lord Sri Vishnu came in his ‘Mohini Roopa’ (form) and deceived the demon Bhasmasura and killed the asura (demon) with his own boon, that is, keeping Bhasmasura’s hand on his own head.

12) Lord Shiva had blessed an asura (demon) named Atula, that is, asura Atula shall rest in Lord Sri Parashurama.

But, when Lord Sri Rama Chandra Prabhu hit his arrow on the stomach of Lord Sri Parashurama (also an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu), the asura (Demon) Atula died instantly.

We are here not to show someone superior and other(s) inferior. But, we should read our Shastras (Hindu Texts) to know the correct meaning.

Especially if we learn our Shastras (Hindu Texts) under the guidance of the correct Guru, we will definitely know the secrets of our Great Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism).

We should never just accept something which is shown in TV serials or movies. They just want money and not the truth.

Also shouldn’t accept whatever some less knowledgeable people speak about. Don’t follow what has been said in this post too.

But, rather you should read our Shastras (Hindu Texts) by yourself and know the correct meaning under the guidance of correct Guru.
