In Sanskrit Purana is written as पुराण (purāṇa). Purana means "ancient stories of Indian history".
Puranas have vast amount of the history which covers wide range of topics, particularly about real legends and other traditional lore of India (Bharata Varsha / Bharat Varsh).
Rishi Lomaharshana gave to other Rishis / sages a list of the eighteen Puranas names.
