Just before moving towards to know about “What is Brahma hatya dosha unknown facts | Balarama expiates killing a Brahmin story“, let us know few basic and important information.
Dear friends, let us understand “what is Brahma hatya dosha” by knowing a story from the great epic Mahabharata.
Let us consider a story of Balarama, that is, brother of Lord Krishna.
(Please do read the whole story to understand the correct and complete meaning of Brahma hatya dosham).
Before that, let us know the basic meaning of ‘Brahma hatya dosham‘.
Here Brahma = Divine Brahmin, hatya = killing, dosham (dosha) = great blot.
That is, if someone kills a divine Brahmin, then it will considered as a brahma hatya dosham.
First let us know about Draupadi Devi and her five husband (As this is part of this information), later let us know about below:

DRAUPADI and her FIVE HUSBANDS
Frightened by the severe penance of Trishira, Lord Indra killed him to protect his authority and power.
But the sin of killing a Brahmin took away Lord Indra’s radiance. Trishira was the son of Twashta.
Twashta became furious at his son’s death. He plucked one strand of hair from his hair-lock and offered it in the sacrificial fire.
This resulted into the creation of a formidable and strong demon named Vritarasura.
This demon was created with the objective of killing Lord Indra.
Learning about the birth of Vritarasura, Indra sent Saptarishis as emissaries to work out a pact with the demon.
The Saptarishis effected a friendship between Indra and Vritarasura.
But Indra had other ideas. He took Vritarasura by surprise and killed him.
This deceitful action of Indra further enraged the clans of the demons.
Soon the atrocities of the demons increased to unbearable limits.
Even Prithvi felt unable to bear the burden of their atrocities.
She approached the deities and requested them to get her rid of the burden.
Thus, to relieve Prithvi of her burden, the deities began to take incarnation on earth.
Dharma and Vayu implanted Indra’s radiance in the womb of Kunti. This resulted in the birth of Yudhishthira and Bheema.
Then Indra himself produced Arjuna from Kunti.
Nakula and Sahadeva were born because of Indra’s radiance implanted by Ashwini kumaras in the womb of Madri.
Thus all the five Pandavas originated from the same source even though they appeared as distinct entities.
Whereas Draupadi Devi was none other then the amalgamation of five Devis as given below:
Sri Bharati Devi (Vaayu Deva’s wife), Sri Sachi Devi (Indra Deva’s wife), Sri Shyamala Devi (Yama Deva’s wife),
Sri Parvati Devi (Rudra deva’s wife) and Sri Usha Devi (wife of two Ashwini Kumaras), produced from the altar in Drupada’s palace.
In human incarnation, Draupadi got five Pandavas as her husband.
Draupadi Devi was born from the Yagna Kunda (Sacrificial Fire).

EXPIATION OF BALARAMA (About Brahma hatya dosham) information is as given below:
Sri Krishna’s brother Balarama had remained impartial in the battle of Mahabharata.
Instead of championing the cause either for the Pandavas or for the Kauravas, he had preferred to go on a pilgrimage.
His wife Revati also accompanied him on this pilgrimage.
Once while travelling, Balarama drank toddy and entered a beautiful garden known as Raivata.
Taking a stroll, Balarama and Revati then reached a hut.
In the hut, many Brahmins were sitting and listening to Sutaji’s oration.
When the Brahmins saw Balarama, they stood up and felicitated him.
Only Sutaji did not stand up. Balarama felt insulted and at once killed him.
(This is called as Brahma hatya, that is, killing a divine Brahmin is considered as a Brahma hatya dosham (dhosha).)
(Here Brahma means a Brahmin, hatya means killing, dosham means great blot).
When Balarama regained his composure after the intoxication receded, he felt guilty for his deed.
His belief that killing of Sutaji would enable him to attain a place in Brahma Loka proved to be based on false notion as the Brahmins had shunned him for his deed.
After Balarama realized his folly, he began to curse himself and resolved to observe a twelve-year long fast in order to expiate for his sin.
(Brahma hatya dosham nivarana – Getting clear of the Brahma hatya dosham.)
Thereafter, Balarama migrated to a place of pilgrimage known as ‘Pratiloma Saraswati‘ to carry out his expiation (Brahma hatya dosham).
