Just before moving towards to know about “What is Vindhya (Vindhyachal) mountain, Sage Agastya, Lord Surya story“, let us know few basic and important information.
Once, sage Bhagavan Sri Veda Vyasa Ji narrated the following tale to all the assembled sages:
Once, while wandering about, Devarishi Narada arrived at Vindhya (Vindhyachala) mountain.
Devarishi Narada was received with great honour and respect by Vindhyachala mountain.
But, when the time arrived for Devarishi Narada to take his leave, he took a deep sigh, which made Vindhyachala extremely perplexed and he asked Devarishi Narada if anything was wrong.
Maharshi Narada replied:
‘Your rival-Meru mountain is superior to you in every respect and this is the fact I am lamenting about.’
‘My deep sigh is just the indication of my worried state of mind.’
Vindhyachala mountain was filled with inferiority complex and started waiting for an opportunity when he could prove his superiority to Meru mountain.
Vindhyachala thought: ‘Perhaps Devarishi Narada was right for even Lord Surya has great respect for Meru’s might and this is the reason why he circumambulates my adversary.’
‘If I am able to beat Meru in height then may be Lord Surya would start circumambulating me and this way I shall prove my superiority to Meru.’
Now, Vindhyachala started increasing his height and in a short time its peaks became invisible.
The fallout of this amazing incident proved to be quite catastrophic for the world, because even Lord Surya was left stranded at a particular point in the horizon.
As a result, one part of the earth became too hot for any life to exist.
Similarly, the other half of the earth became unbearably cold.
The time became still and everything went haywire in the world.
All the deities became extremely worried and went to Lord Sri Brahma Deva to seek his help.
Lord Sri Brahma Deva advised Deities to go to Kashi and seek help from Maharishi (sage) Agastya.
Deities were pleased at their good fortune of getting a chance to visit the divine Kashi.
Deities, after reaching Kashi paid a visit to ‘Manikarnika tirtha‘ and took their bath.
Subsequently, they went to ‘Lord Sri Vishwanath (Vishwanatha)‘ temple and worshipped Lord Shiva there.
At last, they reached the hermitage of Agastya where he was busy worshipping a self made Shiva Linga.
The entire hermitage was crowded with young pupils (Dvijas) of Agastya.
After the pleasantries having been exchanged, sage Agastaya asked the deities about the purpose of their visit.
Agastya orders Vindhya to diminish its size
When Maharishi (Sage) Agastya learnt of the problem created by Vindhyachala, he agreed to help the deities.
Maharishi (Sage) Agastya did this, despite fully aware of the fact that once he leaves Kashi, it would not be possible for him to see his dearest Kashi once again at least in his present birth.
Before leaving for Vindhyachala, Maharishi (Sage) Agastya sought permission from Lord Bhairava.
Maharishi (Sage) Agastya then reached the place where Vindhyachala had obstructed the path of Surya.
Lopamudra [Maharishi (Sage) Agastya wife] accompanied Maharishi (Sage) Agastya.
When Vindhyachala found Agastya starring angrily at him, he became scarred and immediately minimized his size.
Maharishi (Sage) Agastya was pleased that his objective had been achieved without making any effort.
But Maharishi (Sage) Agastya knew quite well that once he leaves the place, Vindhyachala would regain his mammoth size.
So Maharishi (Sage) Agastya decided to do something so that Vindhyachala could not obstruct the path of Lord Surya.
Maharishi (Sage) Agastya worked out a plan according to which he instructed Vindhyachala to wait for him until he returned after accomplishing his pilgrimage.
Vindhyachala mountain agreed assuming that Maharishi (Sage) Agastya would return in a short time.
Vindhyachala mountain thanked his good fortune of escaping Maharishi (Sage) Agastya’s wrath, which could otherwise have threatened his very existence.
Maharishi (Sage) Agastya then went away and he made sure to never to return and Vindhyachala kept on waiting for his arrival.
This way, the path being cleared, Lord Surya was once again able to move freely on its orbit without any problem and as a result normalcy returned to the world.
On the other hand, Maharishi (Sage) Agastya who was not at all happy leaving his dearest place Kashi was desperate to get there back as soon as possible.
But, Maharishi (Sage) Agastya knew that his wish was going to remain unfulfilled.
While wandering about, Maharishi (Sage) Agastya reached Kolhapur, where he worshipped Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi Devi.
(Earlier Kolhapur place was called as Karaveerapura / Karaveerapur / Karveerpur.)
(To know about the Kolhapur or Karveerapur facts, you can click this below link:)
When Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi Devi appeared, Maharishi (Sage) Agastya asked her whether he would ever be able to reach Kashi in his present life.
For this Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi Devi replied as below:
‘Your (Maharishi Agastya) wishes will be fulfilled in the coming nineteenth Dwapara yuga,’
‘when you would incarnate as Vyasa and would contribute a great deal in the propagation of the Vedas and Puranas.’
(Vyasa is a rank in Hinduism and in Sanskrit Vyasa means, someone who separates the great and divine Hindu texts into smaller texts,)
(so that it will be easy for ordinary people to understand it.)
(This Vyasa is different and Lord Sri Vedavyasa is different.)
(But, both came down to separate the great and divine Hindu texts for the betterment of the common man.)
(The present Sri Vedavyasa who composed the great Mahabharata is an avatar of Lord Vishnu.)
Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi Devi continued: ‘There is a sacrosanct place of Lord Kartikeya not very far from here.’
‘Go there and pay your obeisance to Lord Kartikeya (Lord Shiva and Goddess Sri Parvati Devi son) and he would unravel the mysterious aspects of Kashi to you.’
Maharishi (Sage) Agastya and his wife Lopamudra then went to the mountain called Srishaila, where Lord Kartikeya lived at that time.
(This Srisaila in today’s time is called as Srisailam. Srisailam is present in today’s Andhra Pradesh.)
(In this temple of Srisailam, Lord Shiva is known as Lord Sri Mallikarjuna and Goddess Sri Parvati Devi is known as Goddess Sri Bhramarambika Devi.)
