Just before going to “Hindu Guardians (Lord) of directions (Ashta Dikpalakas) information | Vastu shastra for constructing a new house“, let us have a brief some brief information.
According to Hindu Sanatana Dharma, there are ten dishas / directions, and each disha (directions) has a deity attached to it and those deities are known as Dikpalakas / Dikpals.
Our (Sanatana Dharma) ancestors were very clearly knowing about the technicality of the existing of the Gods in each directions, that is:
Of North-East (ईशान्य) – Ishanya (God of Knowledge and Wealth, Form of Shiva).
Similarly of East (पूर्व) – Indra (King of Gods, God of Rain), North (उत्तर) – Kubera (God of Wealth, Treasurer of Gods),
West (पश्चिम) – Varuna (God of Ocean), South (दक्षिण) – Yama (God of Death).
Also of Northwest (वायव्य) – Vayu (God of Wind), Southeast (आग्नेय) – Agni (God of Fire),
Southwest (नैरुत्या) – Nairutya (Goddess of Bad Luck and Sorrow), Upward (ऊर्ध्व) – Brahma (Creator God), Downward (अधः) – Vishnu (Protector God).
In Hinduism, Vastu Shastra means ‘Science which deals with Vastu’ (Science which deals with construction of house, temples, buildings, etc).
Now let us know the importance and “Which Deity / Gods attached to each directions according to Hinduism”:
List of Hindu Guardians of directions (Ashtadikpalakas) (Dashadikpalakas) are as given below:

More details about Vastu shastra for constructing a new house are as given below:
North-East (ईशान्य) – Ishanya (God of Knowledge and Wealth, Form of Shiva)
This is the best place to have the mukhya dwara / main door.
From this direction the Surya kirana / Sun rays would enter the house and is definitely this is the most highly mangalakara / auspicious disha to have the mukhya dvara / main door.
Also in this place Sri Tulasi (Basil) plant has to be planted.
This place has to be left alone and nothing should be constructed in this place as this place belongs to Bhagavan, that is this place should be empty.
East (पूर्व) – Indra (King of Gods, God of Rain)
In this disha / direction, most of the houses have there mukhya dvara / main doors.
This is the second best disha to have the mukhya dvara / main door as this is the disha from where the Surya Kirana / Sun rays enters into our house.
And it is definitely the second most highly mangalakara / auspicious disha to have the mukhya dvara / main door.
Also in this direction, the window should be placed.
North (उत्तर) – Kubera (God of Wealth, Treasurer of Gods)
In this disha / direction, the Demigod Kubera exists. All want to prosper in their lives and would definitely want to have wealth in their houses.
Thus this is the third most main disha / direction to have mukhya dvara / main door. But it is always better to have the door at the North-East and East direction.
If North-East or East directions are not possible, then one can opt for the North facing door. Also in this direction, the window should be placed.
In this place a room can be built for the children or for the younger people in comparison of the age of the whole family.
The person sleeping in this room should be facing East, his / her head should be towards South and legs has to be at the North direction.
West (पश्चिम) – Varuna (God of Ocean)
In this disha / direction, the Demigod Varuna exists. Usually this is the place to have windows.
In this place a room can be built for the children or for the younger people in the comparison of the age of the whole family.
The person sleeping in this room should be facing East, his / her head should be towards South and legs has to be at the North direction.
South (दक्षिण) – Yama (God of Death)
In this disha / direction, the Demigod Yama exists. Nobody want to keep the door at this side as nobody want to invite Yama Deva to their houses.
The main door is forbidden to be in the southern direction because south is the direction of Yama Deva, the God of Death. You certainly don’t want to invite Him into your house.
Usually in this place also, the toilet and bathroom are placed.
Also one should note that the person who is sitting on the toilet or who is taking bath should be so placed, that the person sitting on the toilet or taking bath should face north direction.
Northwest (वायव्य) – Vayu (God of Wind)
In this disha / direction, the Demigod Vayu exists. Usually in this place the toilet and bathroom are placed, as the vayu / wind will be blowing in this place more compared to other places.
Also one should note that the person who is sitting on the toilet or who is taking bath should be so placed, that the person sitting on the toilet or taking bath should face north direction.
Southeast (आग्नेय) – Agni (God of Fire)
This is the disha / direction which belongs to Agni Deva. Thus the kitchen has to be placed in this place.
The design of the kitchen should be done in such a way, that the person who is cooking the food, should face North-East or East or North direction.
Again the person who is cooking should be standing in such a way, that the person should be giving most importance for North-East disha first.
Later, then if not possible, it can be East, but even either of these two are not possible, then the person can face North disha.
Southwest (नैरुत्या) – Nairutya (Goddess of Bad Luck and Sorrow)
Here is the place where the elders should be living / sleeping. This room is known as mukhya kaksha / master bedroom.
The person sleeping in this room should be facing East, his / her head should be towards South and legs has to be at the North direction. Also in this place, a heavy metallic item can be kept.
Upward (ऊर्ध्व) – Brahma (Creator God)
This place belongs to the Sri Brahma Deva.
Downward (अधः) – Vishnu (Protector God)
This place belongs to Bhagavan Sri Vishnu. (In fact every place belongs to Sri Vishnu, as he is present everywhere).
Downward (roots) are always protected by Bhagavan Sri Vishnu. Only with good and strong roots (foundation) a secure and sturdy house can be constructed.
Few other points to be noted while constructing the house:
1. The Devalaya / Mandir should be at the North-East, that is at the Ishanya bhaaga / place and also should be facing North-East direction / Ishanya bhaaga.
2. If Ishanya bhaaga is not possible, then the Devalaya / Mandir should be placed at the centre of the house.
3. The place at the Ishanya should be free. Nothing should be constructed in this place. In this place the Sri Tulasi Sasi / plant has to be placed.
4. One should never use the plastic materials in the house.
5. Always we must use the copper / brass or higher material utensils to cook, serve etc of the food.
6. Nothing should be kept on top of the Devalaya / Mandir.
7. Hindu Vastu Shastra is a conventional Indian Shastra (Science) of architecture which depicts about design, foundation, layout, measurements, etc.
8. Hindu Vastu Shastra is originated from ‘Sthapatya Veda’ (स्थापत्यशास्त्र / ಸ್ಥಾಪತ್ಯಶಸ್ತ್ರ / sthāpatyaśastra). This Sthapatya Veda is a part of one of four Vedas named Atharva Veda.
9. Usually people pursue Vastu Shastra (Science of Vastu) when building a house or any others like temples, offices, furniture etc.
10. The basis Vastu Shastra rules are about directions and elements of nature around us.
11. Our surrounding are a combination of 5 elements of nature, that is, earth, water, air, fire, and space.
These five elements are called as Pancha Butas, and the essential thing is that there is always a hidden and continual link between Pancha Butas. Pancha Butas are directly connected with Vastu Shastra.
12. Through this Vastu Shastra, we can easily increase the positive energy and erase the negative energy.
13. Vastu Purusha is the ruling idol for the construction of structures and buildings. The main Vastu Purusha is Bhagavan Sri Vishnu.
14. The primary rules of Vastu Shastra is based on the directions and elements of nature.
15. Vastu Shastra is based on natural energies. e.g., solar energy, lunar energy, sky energy, cosmic energy, thermal energy, magnetic energy and light energy.
16. The basic rules of Vastu Shastra is based on the 8 directions they have (Plus the upper and lower directions as giveb above).
17. The eight directions are North, North East, East, East South, South, South West, West, West North. The other two directions are upper and lower direction.
18. The distinct field of Vastu Shastra starting from selection of a place to the planning and implementation of design or the construction of building and finally to the Grihapravesham of new home.
19. By following the rules of Vastu Shastra, people can build up the relationship stronger. A family’s bondage will increase enormously if correct Vastu Shastra is followed when constructing a new house.
20. In order to avoid the negativity from our lives, while constructing a new building, we need to implement the rules of Vastu Shastra as much as possible.
