Just before going to “Benefits of reading Bhagavad Gita (As per Hindu Texts) | Can Bhagavad Gita change life? | Why is Bhagavad Gita so powerful?“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.
To understand why we should read Sri Bhagavad Gita, let us consider one beautiful example from our great Puranas as given below:
Once an old man’s grandson was reading the Bhagavad Gita. But as many times he reads the Bhagavad Gita, he was not able to understand anything.
And thus, the grandson went to his grandfather and said, I have been trying to read Bhagavad Gita for some days, but I am not able to understand anything.
His grandfather told the child to pick up a perforated charcoal basket and bring the water from the river using the perforated charcoal basket. The child been innocent ran to the river and brought the water in the perforated charcoal basket.
But, as soon as the child reached his Grandfather the water got empty. The child again tried to bring the water, but the answer was the same to the child that the perforated charcoal basket is empty again.
The child went to his Grandfather and complained that he is trying so hard to bring the basket full of water, but as soon as he reaches home, water is getting emptied. Then his Grandfather told that “You are not giving your 100%. Go and try once more”.
Thus the child went to the river bed and the child was caught in the same situation. Again the child complained that he is trying so hard, but he is not able to bring the water. Then his Grandfather told that, this time you try to bring the water by running faster.
Again the child tried his best to bring the water in the perforated charcoal basket by running as fast as he can. Will the child be able to bring the water this time with positive result? Child told to his Grandfather that he will try bring water using the bucket.
But his Grandfather insisted that he should bring the water in the perforated charcoal basket only. Grandfather told the child to try one last time and give your 100% and see the result will be positive.
Poor innocent child tried his fullest of his capability, but as expected the child was not able to bring the water in the perforated charcoal basket, except few drops here and there.
Now the child had lost his confidence of bringing water in the perforated charcoal basket and he went to his Grandfather and told that he cannot bring water in the perforated basket, since it has many holes in it.
Finally Grandfather called his child and told him to look at the basket. This time the basket was clean, there were no perforated spots inside or outside the basket. No blackish marks of the charcoal. The basket was clean, indeed very clean.
Thus after this, the Grandfather told to his beautiful and loving Grandchild that the basket is now clean and no dirt or black spots of the charcoal is present any where inside or outside the basket.
Thus Grandfather concludes that any human who reads the Bhagavad Gita, may not understand something of anything, but he will start to change, his mind will start to get cleaned, he will be slowly purified from inside and outside of his body.
But, this does not mean that you cannot understand anything or that you can receive everything spiritually without understanding Srimad Bhagavad Gita. Of course, we will and we can understand Srimad Bhagavad Gita according to our own capacity.
First we need to find the right Guru. The ‘Adi Guru’, that is, first Guru of this Guru should be directly Lord Sri Vishnu himself. We need to find the right Guru Parampara (genealogy).
After knowing the proper Guru Parampara, the Guru you are looking should know Sanskrit very well. Guru must have learned various Hindu scriptures like Mahabharata, Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagatavam, Srimad Ramayana, Puranas, Upanishads etc.
According to Sanatana Dharma a person who knows the correct meaning of all Hindu texts is a proper Guru. If a person does not understand the correct meaning of Hindu texts and gives his/her own interpretation according to his/her thinking, then we should avoid the teachings of such Gurus. This person is not a right Guru for you.
A proper Guru should be a devotee of Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna), he should be a real ‘Vaishnava’. If a person is not a devotee of Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna), he cannot give proper explanation of Hindu scriptures including Srimad Bhagavad Gita.
There are many people in India and outside who call themselves as Babas, Swamis etc. But these people cannot read even a single word of Sanskrit and Srimad Bhagavad Gita and other Hindu texts.
Some Babas, Swamis may have learned a bit of Sanskrit, but are unable to give a proper explanation of Hindu texts including Srimad Bhagavad Gita. So we have to look for Guru very carefully.
How to find a right Guru : He/she should know Sanskrit very well and must be able to pronounce every Sanskrit alphabet and words in Srimad Bhagavad Gita and other Hindu texts correctly.
He/she must have come in the right ‘Guru Parampara’, i.e. the first Guru must have been Lord Sri Vishnu himself. Don’t go after “self-proclaimed Babas, Swamis”. You have to be careful to find the right Guru.
When we want to enroll our child in a good school, we ask several people. We ask our neighbors, friends, relatives, family members etc. about different schools and teachers.
If we want a good teacher for our child a teacher should be a subject matter expert. For example, if a child wants to learn mathematics, the teacher must be an expert in that subject. Similarly any other subject or language.
When we need fruits and vegetables, we look for the freshest and best quality. Also, while searching for the right Guru, we should be more careful.
In Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna has said in 9th chapter shloka #22 as given below:
ananyāśh chintayanto māṁ ye janāḥ paryupāsate |
teṣhāṁ nityābhiyuktānāṁ yoga-kṣhemaṁ vahāmyaham || 9-22 ||
Just watch, what a karunashali (the kindest) our Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna is! Lord Sri Krishna has said that, “He will take care of the welfare (Yoga-Kshema) of His devotees. But with a condition. That condition is that, his devotees should have ‘ananya bhakti / chintana’ towards HIM.”
Here ‘ananya bhakti / chintana’ means unique devotee and excogitation towards Lord Sri Krishna, an avatar and Supreme Lord Sri Vishnu. We should note that there is no difference between Lord Sri Krishna and Lord Sri Vishnu.
If we have ‘ananya bhakti’, that is, an unique type of bhakti / devotion towards Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna that is more than enough. Only bhakti (devotion), that’s all. That’s the greatness of our Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna.
Now let us understand, what is ‘Ananya Bhakti’ is? – Ananya means ‘shouldn’t depend on others’, it’s unique bhakti (devotion), that is, single minded devotion (emphasis on Ananya Bhakti), there shouldn’t be any deviation, only exclusive devotion towards Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna.
For such people Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna will always protect. Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna is the one and the only Reality. Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna is the One who has saved King Ambarisha, Draupadi Devi, Gajendra (Gajendra Moksha story), Prahlada, Dhruva, Pandavas, etc. etc. etc.
Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna is giving us an assurance, that to openly proclaiming that, “He will definitely take care his devotees welfare (Yoga Kshema)”.
Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna is telling that he will surely give the supreme spiritual sense, that is, Mukti / Moksha / liberation. Here Mukti / Moksha means a permanent place in Vaikuntha, that is, Lord Sri Vishnu’s abode where we will be happy forever.
Ananya Bhakti = No one else = Only Bhagavan Lord Sri Vishnu / Hari / Krishna / Rama Bhakti = Hari Sarvottama (Supreme) through the perfect Guru like Sri Madhvacharya Ji (Madhvacharya Ji is the avatar of Lord Sri Vayu Deva).
Lord Sri Vayu Deva took avatar (incarnation) as Lord Sri Hanuman in Treta Yuga and served Lord Sri Rama and Goddess Sri Sita Deva. Lord Sri Vayu Deva took avatar (incarnation) Bhimasena (Bhima) in Dvapara Yuga and did seva of Lord Sri Krishna and Goddess Sri Rukmini Devi and Goddess Sri Satyabhama Devi.
Similarly, Lord Sri Vayu Deva took the avatar (incarnation) as Sri Madhvacharya Ji in Kali Yuga and even today he is serving Lord Sri Vedavyasa in Badrikashrama (Today’s Badrinath).
Thus, Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna is assuring as that, he will definitely give us the Mukti / Moksha / final liberation through a right Guru, that is, through Lord Sri Vayu Deva (Hanuman, Bhima and Sri Madhvacharya Ji).
That is, by reading granthas (Hindu Texts) like Srimad Bhagavad Gita will automatically and definitely lead us to Moksha / Mukti as per our ‘yogyata’ / capability. Moksha / Mukti means a permanent place in Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu abode.

15. Srimad Bhagavad Gita says who is the real Bhagavan (God) and who all are Devatas / Demigods / Deities. Lord Sri Krishna is the ‘One and only God’ and all others are called Devatas (Demigods). Starting from Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi, Lord Sri Brahma, Goddess Saraswati Devi, Lord Shiva, etc. are all Devatas (Demigods).
16. And many many many….. more unlimited things. From Srimad Bhagavad Gita, we keep learning new and better lessons throughout our life. One lifetime is not enough to learn Srimad Bhagavad Gita.
PS: Srimad Bhagavad Gita is not easy to understand if any human reads for the first or second time. It has to be read again and again for many-many years to come.
