Just before going to “What is Har Sahas meaning | What is Hara Sahasa meaning“, let us have some brief information.
Lord Shiva was born from the ‘manasa’ (divine mind) of Lord Sri Brahma Deva. While Lord Sri Brahma Deva was born from the ‘nabhi’ (divine navel) of Lord Sri Vishnu.
Lord Shiva’s consort name is Goddess Sri Parvati Devi. Lord Shiva’s children names are Lord Sri Ganesha and Lord Sri Kartikeya.
The very important qualities of Lord Shiva are the sarpam / serpent Vasuki around his neck, the adorning crescent moon Sri Chandra Deva.
The most pious and holy river Ganga flowing from his matted hair, the third eye (Trinetra) on his forehead, the Trishula / Trident, as his weapon, and the Damaru (A divine drum).
Now, let us move forward to know about “What is Har Sahas meaning | What is Hara Sahasa meaning“:
Usually, we are often use the word “Hara sahasa (Har Sahas)” (हर साहस) in our day to day life without actually knowing the exact meaning of those words.
Let us today understand the real meaning of it: After getting ‘Brahma Hatya dosha’, Lord Shiva was worried (this is the story of Lord Brahma Deva’s fifth face).
(Here ‘Brahma Hatya Dosha’ means cutting Lord Sri Brahma Deva’s fifth head.)
First let us know the correct story of “What is the real story of Lord Sri Brahma Deva’s fifth head”
First let us understand few very important background points regarding Lord Sri Brahma Deva and Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva) as given below:
1. Lord Sri Brahma Deva is the pithru / father of Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva). Lord Shiva is one of the ‘manasa putra’ (born through mind) of Lord Sri Brahma Deva.
2. Lord Sri Brahma Deva’s yogyata / capability is much higher than Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva).
3. Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva) is a great sajjana (sajjan), that is, someone who follow Sanatan Dharma in the right way.
4. Lord Sri Brahma Deva is jeevottama, that is, best among all the living beings.
5. Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva) would never ever do anything which is not Dharma.
6. Lord Sri Brahma Deva is called ‘Chatur Mukha Brahma Deva’, that is, someone who has four faces / heads.
7. But for one special reason, Lord Sri Brahma Deva adds one more head to his four heads. That is, Lord Sri Brahma Deva becomes ‘Pancha Mukha Brahma Deva’ (someone with five heads).

With these points, let us move to next step of this story:
Once a demon named Hayagrivasura steal’s the Great Vedas from Lord Sri Brahma Deva and to recover these Great Vedas from the demon,
Lord Sri Vishnu takes avatar of Lord Sri Hayagriva (horse face and human body) and kills the demon Hayagrivasura and thus recovers the Great Vedas from the demon Hayagrivasura.
Later, all the four Vedas were handed over to Lord Sri Brahma Deva.
After this, Lord Sri Brahma Deva adds one more extra head to his existing four heads to read the Chatur Vedas (four Vedas).
(This is a drama / vidambana done by Lord Sri Vishnu, Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi and Lord Sri Brahma Deva.)
(This is just like a drama / vidambana in which a person adds some extra clothing or garments during his / her drama’s presentation.)
(Also we should remember that Lord Sri Brahma Deva is the pitaa / father of Lord Sri Rudra Deva / Lord Shiva.)
With this we should also remember that Lord Sri Brahma Deva never ever makes any mistake or doesn’t make any ‘vikarma’ (a Karma which is not as per the Sanatana Dharma).
To show the greatness of Great Vedas to the multiverses (unlimited Universes), Lord Sri Brahma Deva makes one small tiny mistake while making ‘ucchaarana’ / pronunciation intentionally so that in the future nobody makes such kind of mistake intentionally or unintentionally.
(This mistake was done intentionally, to show the world the super greatness of Great Vedas and Lord Sri Brahma Deva.)
Lord Sri Vishnu, Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi and Lord Sri Brahma Deva want to show to the world that even a slightest mistake of chanting the Great Vedas in the incorrect way can lead to huge disastrous.
Thus, seeing this mistake of pronunciation of the Great Vedas by Lord Sri Brahma Deva, Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi gives orders to Lord Sri Rudra Deva.
Goddess Sri Lakshmi Deva orders Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva) to behead the fifth head of the Lord Sri Brahma Deva, as Lord Sri Brahma Deva made the mistake of chanting the Great Vedas incorrectly.
(We should always remember that Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi’s orders are always obeyed by everybody other than Lord Sri Vishnu. This is very clearly given in the Ambhrini Sukta in the Vedas.)
(We should again always remember that this is one of the dramas-leelas / vidambana of Lord Sri Vishnu and this mistake was made intentionally to teach to the world about the Super greatness of the Great Vedas).
With this, Lord Sri Rudra Deva beheads the Lord Sri Brahma Deva’s fifth head using the bow and arrow given by Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi.
Thus, that fifth head of Lord Sri Brahma Deva becomes like a great fire of the mountain (like a volcanic eruption) and gets glued on the right hand of the Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva).
But Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi softens (cools down) it by using the Lord Sri Vishnu’s paadodaka (water of Lord Sri Vishnu’s legs, that is, using Goddess Ganga Devi’s water).
Even today this ‘Brahma Kapala’ (ब्रह्म कपाल) (brahma kapāla) place is still present in India in Badrikashrama (today’s Badrinath).
After this, Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva) comes to Badrikashrama (toda’s Badrinath) and takes bath in the Great Goddess Sri Ganga Devi’s river (Ganga river).
This river of Ganga river is nothing but Lord Sri Vishnu’s Paadodaka (which is born from the legs of Lord Sri Vishnu). That’s why Ganga river’s water is the most auspicious water on this planet.
This river water has the power of cleansing the ‘Brahma Hatya Dosha’. That’s why Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva) comes and takes bath at the Ganga river and gets freed of the ‘Brahma Hatya Dosha’.
Lord Shiva cutting off Lord Sri Brahma Deva’s fifth face
Here two points to be noted are:
1. One should never do the ucchaarana / pronunciation of Vedas in the incorrect way.
2. Before this period, there was nothing like ‘Brahma Hatya Dosha’ known to the universe.
Lord Sri Vishnu has to show why these two are completely against Sanatana Dharma. Thus, this leela / vidambana / drama is shown by Lord Sri Vishnu to all of us.
Lord Sri Vishnu shows that what would happen if someone mispronounces the Great Vedas incorrectly and also Lord Sri Vishnu shows that if one kills a brahmana (Brahmin) what would happen.
(Brahmana / Brahmin means someone who follow the Sanatana Dharma in the correct way and not just by birth Brahmana people).
Thus, only to show to the world about the consequences of these two, Lord Sri Vishnu makes this leela / drama / vidambana.
But again to show the greatness of Lord Sri Brahma Deva, the beheaded fifth head is given to Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva) by Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi to Lord Sri Rudra Deva’s right hand.
And thus from this time the same head was called as ‘Kapala’ (कपाल) (kapāla) (a bowl type of thing – the English word cup is the short and corrupted word of the original Sanskrit word Kapaala).
Later, Goddess Sri Annapoorneshwari Devi (Goddess Sri Parvati Devi) donates some food grains to Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva) and thus the Kapala gets detached from the hand of Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva).
Here it should be noted that this is a pure leela (drama / vidambana) of the Lord Sri Vishnu. We should note that who ever makes mistake(s) in any form will be punished by Lord Sri Krishna (Vishnu) accordingly.
There is no getting away in Lord Sri Narayana (Vishnu / Rama / Krishna) court.
We get the fruits as per our Karma. If we do good Karma, we get the good fruits. If we do bad Karma, we get the fruits accordingly.
Now, let us come back to learn about “What is Har Sahas correct meaning”:
Lord Shiva tried his best to get rid of ‘Brahma Hatya Dosha’. These efforts by Lord Shiva is termed as “Hara sahasa / Har Sahas”.
The various steps Lord Shiva undertook to get rid of ‘Brahma Hatya Dosha’ is as given below:
a) Lord Shiva went in all the dasha dikhs (ten directions) and preached that ‘Hari naama smaranam’ (chanting Lord Sri Hari / Vishnu names) is the ultimate for every paapa prayaschitta (expiation of sin).
b) When Lord Shiva went to Badari (Badrinath), there he could not get the darshanam (divine view) of Srimann Narayana (Badri Narayana).
When Lord Shiva has removed the head of Lord Sri Brahma Deva, how can Lord Sri Vishnu will be pleased on him?
c) Later Lord Shiva went to Yamuna, but the entire water was dried up. Again Lord Shiva went to plakshma dveepa (a place), but it was invisible for him.
d) Again later, Lord Shiva went to Pushkara (Pushkar), which rejected to remove his ‘Brahma Hatya Dosha’, so does the naimisharanya.
e) Lord Shiva then went to Saindhavaranya, and Dharmaranya, there was also not possible.
f) Here again Lord Shiva went to Kurukshetra, there he was able to see Lord Sri Vishnu.
Lord Shiva did the stotra (meditation of Lord Sri Vishnu) of Lord Sri Vishnu and thus Lord Sri Vishnu with his Lord Sri Keshava roopa (form) was pleased and removed his ‘Brahma Hatya Dosha’ (killing of a Brahmin – In this case Lord Sri Brahma Deva).
Now we must have understood, that why people are calling Lord Shiva’s tour as “Hara sahasa / Har Sahas”.
