Just before going to “Krishna stories for kids and elders (for all ages) (moral stories) | How merciful is Krishna (Vishnu) | What is the mercy of Lord Krishna (Vishnu)? | Was Lord Krishna (Vishnu) humble? | How can I get mercy of Lord Krishna (Vishnu)? | What is Garuda, Maninaga story“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

Lord Sri Krishna (Vishnu) is called as ‘karunanidhi’ and ‘karunasagara’. That is, he is the owner of mercy (kindness) (karunanidhi) and his mercy is as vast as ocean (karunasagara).

There is no match and there is no story in Hindu Sanatana Dharma which can show that someone else is more merciful and kindhearted than Lord Sri Krishna (Vishnu).

In this post (article) you will know various short stories of Lord Sri Krishna (Vishnu) describing the mercy (kindness) of Lord Sri Krishna (Vishnu) as given below.

Krishna and Sudama : Sudama Brahmin and his family were very poor, they had no proper food to eat, no clothes to wear, there house was almost empty, there was nothing in their house.

After many years of struggle, Sushila, the wife of Sudama Brahmin, fully aware of the supreme powers of Lord Sri Krishna (Vishnu), requests Sudama to go and meet Lord Sri Krishna once.

Sudama went to Dwaraka and met Lord Sri Krishna in Mitravinda palace (she is one of Lord Sri Krishna’s consorts).

Lord Krishna took good care of Sudama and provided all the delicious food, luxurious clothes and extended the best hospitality to Sudama Brahmin.

The next day Lord Sri Krishna took back all the valuable things that Lord Sri Krishna had given to the Sudama Brahmin and while returning home Lord Sri Krishna told Sudama like this:

“You (Sudama) might find thieves in the forest and that it is dangerous to have all the valuable jewels with you” and thus Lord Sri Krishna took back all the valuables from Sudama Brahmin.

Sudama was a scholar and knew that Lord Sri Krishna was teaching him a lesson that a man should die empty-handed as he came empty-handed at the time of his birth. Thus, Sudama returned home without carrying anything along with him.

After reaching his village Sudama was surprised to find a big palace at the place of his hut and Sudama understood that Lord Sri Krishna had blessed him and his family with all the wealth and thanked Lord Sri Krishna.

Krishna and Draupadi vastraharana (disrobing) : Lord Sri Krishna considered Draupadi as his own sister and sakhi (very close friend). Lord Sri Krishna called Draupadi as ‘Sakhi’ and Draupadi called Krishna as ‘Sakha’.

Lord Sri Krishna and Draupadi Devi had a great and very close relationship. Draupadi was very important to Lord Sri Krishna and he always supported and helped Draupadi through the epic Mahabharata.

Duryodhana was the original Kali of the Kali Yuga and his brother Dushasana was the ‘Meghanada’ (Indrajeet) in his previous life, i.e. during the Ramayana period.

When this demonic minded person Dushasana tried to disrob Draupadi, Draupadi started chanting various names of Lord Sri Krishna like Sri Govinda, Sri Keshava, Sri Madhava, Sri Mukunda, etc.

Lord Sri Krishna was not physically present on this occasion, but Lord Sri Krishna was always there to help and support Draupadi Devi.

Draupadi Devi is no ordinary woman. She is an avatar of Goddess Sri Bharati Devi, i.e. she will become Goddess Sri Saraswati Devi in the next Brahma Kalpa.

With the blessings of Lord Sri Krishna, Dushasana was completely unable to disrobe Draupadi Devi. When Dushasana tried more and more to disrobe Draupadi Devi, clothes started appearing automatically on Draupadi Devi.

This is the great and divine power of chanting the names of Lord Sri Krishna. The more we chant the name or names of Lord Sri Krishna, the closer we get to Lord Sri Krishna and He will surely bless us without any question. This is the mercy and kindness of Lord Sri Krishna.

Krishna and Akrura : Akrura was the son of Shwaphalka and Gandini, the daughter of the King of Kashi, who was instructed by Kamsa to drive his nephews, that is, Lord Sri Krishna and Balarama to a Dhanuryaga (arms practice) in Mathura, where they would be killed.

During this journey Akrura witnesses Lord Sri Krishna’s ‘Vishwaroopa’ (theophany). Akrura becomes the owner of the syamantaka mani (an ornament) after the death of its original owner, Satrajita.

Akrura was a cousin of King Kamsa of Mathura. In the Vishnu Purana, prophesied to be killed by his nephew, Lord Sri Krishna, Kamsa orders Akrura to bring Lord Sri Krishna and Balarama to Mathura on his chariot.

An invitation was issued on the pretext of inviting Lord Sri Krishna and Balarama to the Dhanuryaga festival in Mathura on the fourteenth day, where Kamsa planned to kill Lord Sri Krishna.

Kamsa ordered Akrura that following the death of his nephews (Krishna and Balarama), Kamsa wished to seize all the properties of the Gopalakas (cowherds). As a devotee of Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna), Akrura was excited at the prospect of meeting Lord Sri Krishna.

After Akrura reached Gokula, he saw Lord Sri Krishna and his brother Balarama among the cattle, wondering if they would reject him for his association with Kamsa.

But our merciful and kind hearted Lord Sri Krishna and Balarama treated their uncle Akrura very well, and Akrura proceeded to tell about the mistreatment of Vasudeva, Devaki and Ugrasena in the tyranny of Kamsa and the reason why he was sent to Gokula.

Lord Sri Krishna and Balarama agreed to accompany Akrura to Mathura the next day. The gopikas and Gopalakas (cowherds) lamented Lord Sri Krishna’s departure from their place, calling Akrura cruel for keeping Lord Sri Krishna away from them.

During their journey, Akrura bathed in the waters of the divine river Yamuna, where Akrura saw the celestial forms of Balarama as the Adishesha and Lord Sri Krishna as his four-armed (chaturbhuja) Lord Sri Vishnu and eulogized them.

This is the great mercy and kindness of Lord Sri Krishna (Vishnu). He shows His different forms to His true devotees. We should become simple devotees of Lord Sri Krishna and He will bless us with everything we need.

Reaching Mathura, Akrura informed Lord Sri Krishna and Balarama that they would have to walk the royal road from that point forward, and he proceeded ahead alone in his chariot.

Krishna and Akshaya Patra : During the forest exile of the Pandavas, Lord Sri Surya Deva (Sun God) had gifted the Pandavas (Yudhishthira) with a divine vessel (pot) called ‘Akshaya Patra’.

What made this pot special was that it provided what and how much food the owner wanted for that day. But it was a condition of giving only once a day.

Once Duryodhana sent sage (Rishi) Durvasa to humiliate the Pandavas. Duryodhana was aware of the power of this inexhaustible pot (Akshaya Patra) and knew that this vessel was only providing food during the day and just once.

Thus, Duryodhana tells Rishi Durvasa to go to the Pandavas after they (the Pandavas) finish their meal. Reluctantly, Sage (Rishi) Durvasa goes to the Pandavas.

The Sage (Rishi) Durvasa approaches the Pandavas’ hermitage (ashram) and asks Draupadi Devi to feed him and his followers. Meanwhile, Sage Durvasa tells the Pandavas that he and his group will bathe in a nearby river and return soon.

Draupadi Devi did not know what to do in this situation because Pandavas cannot say ‘no’ to those who ask for food. Thus Draupadi Devi prays to Lord Shri Krishna.

Our most merciful and compassionate Lord Sri Krishna arrives there and asks Draupadi Devi for food. Draupadi Devi tells Lord Sri Krishna not to play with her and the Pandavas, even though he is fully aware of the situation there.

Draupadi Devi brings the empty ‘Akshaya Patra’ and shows it to Lord Shri Krishna. A grain of rice was stuck in the pot. Lord Sri Krishna eats this one grain of rice.

As soon as Lord Sri Krishna ate this one grain of rice, Rishi (Sage) Durvasa and his group start to feel as if their stomach became full and told Draupadi Devi and the Pandavas that they did not need any food for now.

This is the greatness, kindness and mercy of our Lord Sri Krishna. He does not require anything from His devotees, it is sufficient that we chant His names regularly and He is very easily pleased and satisfied with His devotees.

Krishna and Govardhan hill : People of Vrindavan used to pray to Lord Sri Indra as Supreme God. But, according to Sanatana Dharma Shastras (Hindu scriptures) Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna) is the Supreme God.

Thus to show to the world that Lord Sri Indra Deva is not the Supreme God, but instead He Himself (Lord Sri Krishna) is the Supreme God of the multiverses, Lord Sri Krishna did this vidambana (pastime).

As soon as the people of Vrindavan started praying to Govardhana Hill, Lord Sri Indra Deva got angry and ordered a cloud called Samvartaka (सांवर्तक) to rain heavily on Vrindavan with a heavy flood.

Our Lord Shri Krishna knows everything and anything in this infinite universe. Thus Lord Shri Krishna lifts the entire mountain of Govardhana with the little finger of his left hand, just like a child lifts a small toy.

After lifting Govardhana Hill, Lord Sri Krishna instructs the people of Vrindavan to take shelter under the mountain. Thus all the people of Vrindavan take refuge under Govardhana mountain.

Rain continues for seven days and nights. On the eighth day, the rain stops and Lord Sri Indra Deva realizes his mistake and seeks forgiveness from the real and supreme Lord Sri Krishna (Vishnu).

Krishna and Kunti (stuti) : Kunti and Lord Sri Krishna’s father Vasudeva (वसुदेव) were brother and sister in kinship and thus Lord Sri Krishna had a very close relationship with Kunti.

When Lord Sri Krishna wants to leave Hastinapur after the battle of Mahabharata (Kurukshetra) and wanted to return to Dwarka, Kunti requests (a stuti) Lord Sri Krishna to spend a few more days in Hastinapura.

In the process, Kunti Devi prays to Lord Sri Krishna like this: “May you (Krishna) grant us all sorrow and hardship. We may not lead a materially happy life on this earth. You may not grant us any wealth”.

“We may not lead a prosperous life in Hastinapur or anywhere else on this earth. You can make us poor. You can do anything oh Lord Sri Krishna. But Lord Sri Krishna, you must never go away from us.”

“We need you O Lord Sri Krishna. Only with your help and support we have achieved all this in our life. Without you we are nothing. You should be with us and you should hold our hands and you should lead us in our life.”

Mundanely speaking, Kunti Devi is elder and aunt to Lord Sri Krishna. However, Kunti Devi knows that Lord Shri Krishna is not an ordinary human being, but the Supreme God of the infinite universes.

Kunti Devi knows that Lord Sri Krishna is Lord Sri Vishnu Himself and she knows that there is no difference between Lord Sri Krishna and Lord Sri Vishnu. Thus, Kunti Devi seeks spiritual, continuous and regular help, support and blessings from Lord Sri Krishna.

Krishna and demons : As mentioned in the Mahabharata and Srimad Bhagavatam, Lord Sri Krishna kills many Rakshasas (demons).

Why Lord Krishna killed demons: It is not his duty and not his job. Lord Sri Krishna would had send someone from among the Demigods to accomplish all these things. But, Lord Sri Krishna wants to show that He is the Supreme Lord of the infinite universes. Thus he killed all these demons.

Lord Sri Krishna wants to protect and bestow all mercy, kindness and compassion on His true devotees. Thus Lord Sri Krishna (Vishnu) regularly takes avatar (incarnation) on this earth and kills various rakshasas (demons).

Lord Krishna sucked out the life of demoness named Putana when he was only 7 days old. Lord Sri Krishna kicked and killed the demon Shakatasura (a cart demon) when he was only 3 months old.

Similarly, Lord Sri Krishna slays the tornado (whirlwind) demon named Trinavarta (Trunavarta). Another demon in the form of a calf called Vatsasura was killed by Lord Sri Krishna.

Another demon called Bakasura who came in the form of a huge bird was killed by Lord Sri Krishna. A humongous serpent named Aghasura was executed by Lord Sri Krishna with highest ease.

Lord Sri Krishna killed the demon Arishtasura who comes in the form of a huge bull. Similarly, Lord Sri Krishna slays the demon Dhenukasura who came in the form of a donkey.

Kaliya, a huge snake with 1000 hoods, was troubling the people of Vrindavan. Lord Sri Krishna did not kill this snake, but thought good lesson and ordered it to leave Vrindavan (Yamuna River) immediately.

Once Lord Sri Krishna swallowed the forest fire very easily without any difficulty to save his devotees. Lord Sri Krishna executed the demon Keshi who came in the form of a gigantic horse.

Another demon called Vyomasura, who came in the form of a bat and was a powerful sorcerer, was slayed by Lord Sri Krishna. A demonic elephant named Kuvalayapeeda was killed by Lord Krishna when He was entering Mathura.

Lord Sri Krishna’s maternal uncle Kamsa was killed by Lord Sri Krishna by kicking him several times. Lord Sri Krishna killed a demon called Kalayavan from the country called Yavana inside a cave through a king called Muchukunda.

Another very powerful demon named Narakasura (Bhaumasura) was killed by Lord Sri Krishna. This demon had captured 16,108 women and was troubling them.

Similarly, Lord Sri Krishna fights with a demon named Banasura who had 1000 arms. Lord Sri Krishna cuts off 998 hands of this demon.

But He (Krishna) does not kill this demon as he (Banasura) comes from Prahlada’s lineage. Earlier Lord Sri Vishnu had promised Prahlada that he would not kill anyone from his family.

Lord Sri Krishna teaches a good lesson to a king named Paundraka (Paundraka Vasudeva) who thinks himself to be Supreme God and was wearing all the clothes worn by Lord Sri Krishna.

Similarly, Lord Sri Krishna has killed millions of demons to show mercy and kindness to humanity. Thus, we should always show true and pure devotion towards Lord Sri Krishna and chant His various names regularly to get his blessings.

Story of Lord Sri Garuda and Maninaga is as given below (about the merciful of Lord Sri Krishna / Vishnu):

Lord Sri Adishesha (Sheshanag / Ananta Shesha) had a son named Maninaga. Lord Sri Garuda was the enemy of the ‘Sarpa Jaati’ (snake family) and the sarpas (snakes) were afraid of Lord Sri Garuda.

Maninaga once done a tapasya (penance) to Lord Shiva. Having pleased Lord Shiva, Maninaga obtained the blessings that Lord Sri Garuda would not be able to do any harm to Maninaga.

With this blessing Maninaga began to travel wherever he liked with complete freedom and did not run away even when he encountered Lord Sri Garuda.

Lord Sri Garuda found this very strange. Although he could not kill Maninaga, he captured him and imprisoned him in his house. Lord Shiva had a benevolent devotee and friend named Nandi.

Nandi said to Lord Shiva, “Lord, what happened to Maninaga, we haven’t seen him for some time, I hope Lord Shri Garuda has not harmed him”.

Lord Shiva naturally knew what had happened. Lord Shiva advised Nandi to pray to Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna).

Nandi pleased Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna) and then sought the boon of Maninaga to be freed from the captivity of Lord Sri Garuda. Nandi did this and Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna) asked Lord Sri Garuda to release Maninaga.

“Lord”, Garuda said to Lord Sri Vishnu, “this is unfair, other masters take good care of their servants, they give their servants food to eat. See how Lord Shiva sent Nandi to save Lord Shiva’s devotee Maninaga. Whereas you will not give me any food to eat”.

Lord Sri Garuda continued, “Furthermore, when I get something of my own, you ask me to sacrifice that thing. Is this proper on your part? You ride on me when you go out to fight against rakshashas (demons).”

Lord Sri Garuda continued, “Due to my power the rakshasas (demons) will be defeated. Yet it will tickle your ego and for this you will never end thinking that you have defeated the rakshasas (demons) on your own”.

Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna) smiled and gave this reply to Lord Sri Garuda like this, “Garuda, you are right, you have become thinner and leaner by lifting me over the years.”

“It is very true that I can defeat Rakshasas (demons) because of your support and strength. You have a lot of power. Why don’t you carry the weight of my little finger and display your amazing strength?”

Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna) placed his little finger on Lord Sri Garuda’s head. Lord Sri Vishnu’s (Krishna’s) finger was so heavy that Lord Sri Garuda hit the ground and was crushed.

“Please forgive me oh my Lord,” Garuda begged Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna). “I am very foolish and ignorant bird. I am stupid bird and you are the lord of infinite universes. Lord Sri Garuda continued, “I am completely flattened by the weight of your little finger. Please tell me how I can regain my old self”.

Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna) asked Nandi to take Garuda to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva finds a way to restore Garuda’s old appearance. Maninaga was released and Nandi took Garuda to Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva asked Lord Sri Garuda to bathe in the Gautami Ganga (Godavari). This makes his appearance normal again. Lord Sri Garuda did this.

Not only did Lord Sri Garuda restore his old appearance, he became more powerful, mighty and improved his sharpness than before.

The place where Lord Shri Garuda took his bath is the tirtha (place of pilgrimage / divine pond) known as Garudatirtha. So we should always remember that Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna) alone is the most kindest, most powerful and most merciful in the infinite universes.

(This story is taken from Brahma Purana).
