Just before going to “Nahusha story (information, wife, son, parents) | Nahusha and Ashokasundari (marriage) story | Nahusha arrogance story (Nahusha and Indra) | King Nahusha family tree“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.
Nahusha parents names are : Ayus (Ayu) (father) and Prabha (mother). | Nahusha wife name is : Viraja (according to the Harivamsha) or or Ashokasundari (according to Padma Purana). |
Nahusha children (sons) names are : Yati, Yayati, Samyati, Ayati, Viyati, and Kriti (sons). | Dynasty : Chandravamsha (Chandravansh) (Lunar Dynasty). |
Nahusha and Ashokasundari (marriage) story is as given below:
Ashokasundari (अशोकसुन्दरि) (aśōkasundari) is also pronounced as Ashok Sundari in someparts of India.
Ashokasundari was created from the wish-fulfilling and divine tree ‘Kalpavriksha’ (कल्पवृक्ष) (kalpavr̥kṣa) when Goddess Sri Parvati Devi wished for a daughter to ease her loneliness. The words in her name originate from her creation.
(Ashokasundari meaning : Here Ashokasundari = Ashoka + Sundari = Without any worries + Divinely beautiful girl. She is the one who is without worries and also divinely beautiful.
Here, Ashoka refers to the easing of Goddess Sri Parvati Devi’s shoka (worry), which means “sorrow”, while sundari means “beautiful girl”.
The birth of Nahusha’s wife Ashokasundari is recorded in the Padma Purana. In one of the variants of Nahusha’s story, Goddess Sri Parvati Devi once requested Lord Shiva to take her to the most beautiful garden in the world.
As per the wishes of Goddess Sri Parvati Devi, Lord Shiva took her to ‘Nandanavana’ (Blissful Garden) where she saw a tree known as ‘Kalpavriksha’ i.e., the wish-fulfilling tree.
As a mother, it caused great grief and loneliness to Goddess Sri Parvati Devi as Lord Kartikeya, the son of Goddess Sri Parvati Devi, grew up and left Kailasa (Kailash).
Goddess Sri Parvati Devi asked for a daughter from the wish-fulfilling tree i.e. from ‘Kalpavriksha’ to overcome her loneliness. Her wish was fulfilled and thus Ashokasundari was born.
Goddess Sri Parvati Devi prophesied that Ashokasundari would marry Nahusha of the Chandravamsha (Chandravanshi) (Lunar Dynasty), who would be equal to Lord Sri Indra Deva, the King of the Swarga Loka (Heaven).
Once Ashokasundari was strolling in Nandanavana (Blissful Garden) with her maids when a demon (asura) called Hunda saw her and fell in love with her.
However, the young goddess Ashoksundari rejected the advances of the demon (asura) and informed him of her destiny to marry Nahusha.
Thus, Hunda disguised himself as a widow whose husband had been killed by him and asked Ashok Sundari to accompany him to his ashram (hermitage).
The young and beautiful goddess Ashok Sundari accompanied the disguised demon (asura) and reached his palace. Here she discovers his treachery and cursed him to be killed by Nahusha and escapes to her parents’ abode, Mount Kailasa (Kailash).
Thus, the demon (asura) Hunda kidnaps the infant Nahusha from his palace. However, Nahusha is rescued by Hunda’s maid and taken under the care of Maharishi Vashishtha. After a few years, Nahusha grows up and realizes his destiny to kill Hunda.
Now, Hunda kidnaps Ashok Sundari and tells her that he killed Nahusha. The young goddess was consoled by the Kinnara couple, who informed Nahusha’s well-being.
The Kinnara couple predicted that Ashoka Sundari would be the mother of a mighty son named Yayati and a hundred beautiful daughters in the future.
Later when Nahusha grew up, he fought with Hunda and defeated him after a fierce battle and rescued Ashok Sundari whom he married. In time, in the absence of Lord Sri Indra Deva, Nahusha was temporarily made the regent of Swarga Loka (Heaven).
How Nashusha became the king of Svarga Loka (Heaven) (Nahusha arrogance story) (Nahusha and Indra story) is as given below :
The story of King Nahusha, the son of Ayu (Ayus) and father of the Yayati, clearly shows us what un-attainable high positions one can achieve as long as he has humbleness and what drastic downfall can happen if one has arrogance.
Nahusha was raised in his childhood by the great Brahmarshi (Maharshi) Vashishtha.
Since Nahusha was unaffected by happiness or sorrow and did not feel the slightest arrogance when once Devatas / Demigods praised him in his childhood, he was named Nahusha.
(Nahusha means : Here, Na means can’t be affected and husha means happiness or sorrow. This means, he is someone who can’t be affected by both happiness or sorrow.)
Nahusha learnt all shastras (Techniques etc.) and after his education became the King of the Chandravamsha (Chandravansh) (Lunar Dynasty).
Due to Nashusha’s great qualities, his fame spread quickly in all the directions. Everyone was in praise of him, to such an extent that even Vedas praised him.
Nahusha performed 100 Ashwamedha Yagas and hence was deserving the position of Lord Sri Indra Deva. Once, Lord Sri Indra Deva killed an asura / demon by name Vritrasura.
Though Vritra or Vritasura was an asura (demon), he was a Brahmana (Brahmin) and hence Lord Sri Indra Deva had to suffer ‘brahma hatya patakam’ (Sin of killing a Brahmin) and Nahusha was offered the position of Lord Sri Indra Deva for this period.
Nahusha continued to be good, until one day he realized that he was the ruler, king of all the 14-lokas now!
List of 14 lokas names in Hinduism are as given below:
1. Satya loka – This is the place of Sri Chatur Mukha Brahma, where each person’s atman is released from the inevitability of rebirth (but still moksha might not yet received).
2. Tapa loka – Ayohnija devadasis live here.
3. Jana loka – The sons of the god Brahma live here.
4. Mahar loka – Enlightened and ‘jnani’ (knowledgeable) people such as Markandeya live here.
5. Svar loka (Svarga Loka) – This is the place between the Sun and the Polar Star, the Heaven (Svarga Loka) of the Sri Indra Deva. In English it can be called as Heaven or Paradise, where all the 330 million Hindu Devatas / Demigods live here.
6. Bhuvar loka (or Pitru loka) – It is the place between Earth and the Sun. Semi-divine beings live here. Sri Surya Deva also live here.
7. Bhur loka – This is the Mother Earth place.
We the Hindus teach that it is one of billions of inhabited worlds in the universe. This shows the Hindu belief in the multiverses. This is the middle loka of all the 14 lokas.
Similarly if we do Adharma, we may get some other life in our next life, may be an animal or a tree or an insect or we may get to go to lower planets like:
8. Atala loka – Atala is ruled by Bala, who is a son of Maya. Maya possesses mystical powers.
9. Vitala loka – Vitala is ruled by the god Hara-Bhava, who is a form of Lord Shiva.
10. Sutala loka – Sutala is the kingdom of the demon king Bali. After Lord Vamana pushed Bali into deep ground, he was informed to stay in this loka by Lord Vamana.
11. Talatala loka – Talatala is the realm of Maya. Lord Shiva is also here under the protection of Maya.
12. Mahatala loka – Mahatala is where many nagas (sarpas / serpents) live.
13. Rasatala loka – Rasatala is the home of the demons called Danavas and Daityas.
14. Patala loka (or Naga-loka) – This is the lowest realm. It is the region of the nagas, ruled by Vasuki a King serpent. This is the same serpent which is place around the neck of Lord Shiva.
Nahusha suddenly became very proud and once a person has arrogance, he does not think, he assumes he is the greatest and that he can never be wrong. Such was the power of being the king for the Devatas / Demigods and all the worlds!
Nahusha sends a message to Sachi Devi, the great Pativrata (great righteous woman) and wife of real Lord Sri Indra Deva (the previous Indra Deva, the eldest brother of Devatas) that she must serve him as he is the Lord Sri Indra Deva now.
The very moment he wanted a Pativrata (great righteous woman), all his good qualities, tapas-shakti (power of penance) everything were lost and his end was destined.
Sachi Devi tells Nahusha: “O great Lord Sri Indra Deva (Nahusha)! You are the God of the Gods (please remember Gods of all the Demigods and not the Bhagavan). You are very great, please come to my house.”
“But you being so great deserve to be carried by none other than Saptarishis (the great 7 rishis). So please come in a ‘pallakki’ (paalki – palanquin) lifted by them”.
Nahusha really feels that what Sachi Devi said is true (did not realize that she was a pativrata and hence the real meaning behind her words) and immediately ordered the Saptarishis to do so.
Obviously the Saptarishis have conquered anger and ahankar (arrogance), so they carry him.
Nahusha sits in the pallakki (palanquin) lifted by them and in the height of his pride he says “Sarpa Sarpa” (go fast go fast) to Agastya Maharshi.
Since Agasthya Maharishi was very short in height and was taking small small (shorter) steps, Agastya Maharishi said “sarpobhava” (become a snake), in order to teach Nahusha a lesson.
And immediately from the high position of Lord Sri Indra Deva, Nahusha falls as an ‘Ajagaram’ (huge Python) in some deep forest.
(We should always remember that, if we disrespect the elders in any form, in any quantity, we will surely get the papam / sin).
Nahusha spends thousand and thousands of years repenting for his mistake. Once when Pandavas were in the hermitage (ashram) of Vrishaparva, the mighty Bhima goes to the forest and sees Nahusha who was in the form of an incredibly huge Ajagaram (Python).
The great Bhima gets surprised by the amazing strength of it and asks it who it was. Nahusha (Python) tells his unfortunate story and says only the great Yudhishthira, who never deviates from the path of truth, can save him from this form.
Meanwhile, Yudhishthira searching for Bhima reaches that place. Yudhishthira on knowing that the Ajagaram (Python) is his ancestor Nahusha, he prostrates to him and takes his blessings.
Later Yudhishthira answers all the questions of Nahusha and Nahusha gets freed from the terrible form, takes the form of a ‘divya-purusha’ (divine man) and goes to ‘Urdhva Lokas’ (upper planets, much above Svarga Loka) in a ‘divya vimanam’ (divine Airplane).
