First let us understand the basic process of how Sri Shani Deva or any other graha / planet works:

Navagraha working pattern : We should always remember that all the nava grahas / nine planets work under the instructions of Lord Sri Vishnu / Lord Sri Krishna / Lord Sri Rama.

Whatever Lord Sri Vishnu / Lord Sri Krishna / Lord Sri Rama orders and instructs, all these nava grahas / nine planets work in the similar way.

Navagraha dependent on Lord Sri Vishnu : These nava grahas / nine planets can’t give any ashirvada / blessings directly.

But, all these nava grahas / nine planets are completely dependent on Lord Sri Vishnu / Lord Sri Rama / Lord Sri Krishna for all the works.

Nava grahas are positive catalyst : For example, if something good is happening to a person means, then all these nava grahas / nine planets act as a catalyst and they provide all the good things to that particular person.

Nava grahas are negative catalyst : Similarly, if any bad things are happening to a person means, then all these nava grahas / nine planets again act as a catalyst and that particular person gets the fruits as per his / her Karma.

To understand that, let us take this example as give here : If we are travelling on a road using our two wheeler or four wheeler.

At that point, the police would had put a board that in next 10 meters, there is a speed breaker / hump.

Here police are acting as the nava grahas (nine planets) by putting the board of the speed breaker / hump. We as humans, need to follow the instructions.

We need to slow down our vehicle and move at a slower speed until we cross the speed breaker / hump.

If we don’t follow the instructions given by that board (provided by police), and if we continue to over speed, then the chances of falling or an accident may occur.

This could damage us in little or more or due to accident we may loose our life also. This is completely controlled by Lord Sri Vishnu / Lord Sri Rama / Lord Sri Krishna.

Lord Sri Vishnu / Lord Sri Krishna / Lord Sri Rama has provided the instructions through the police (through board / nava grahas / nine planets) and if we don’t follow then we will be in trouble.

Navagraha give cautions : Thus Nava grahas / nine planets, will always be cautioning / informing us about the future problems and happiness.

Need to follow Lord Sri Vishnu instructions : We need to take care of everything (yes off-course with the ashirvada / blessings of Lord Sri Vishnu) and need to follow the instructions as given by Lord Sri Vishnu.

If we follow the instructions, then we will be out of trouble.

Fruits as per Karma : Or, if we think, “no nothing will happen to me, what if I over speed even at the speed breaker / hump point, let me get the thrill of over speeding means” – then we will get the fruits as per our work (that is as per our Karma).

(Following has taken from Sri Harikathamrutasara, Sri Krishnamruta Maharnava, Sri Chaitradimaasa kartavya, different Pravachanas, upanyaasa, etc).

Let us start with a shloka of Sri Shani Deva:

ēkādaśiṁ kin̄cit pāpatrāṇām na vidyatē। vyājēnāpi kr̥tā rājan na darśayati bhāskarim‌ ||

The meaning of this shloka is as below: As Lord Sri Yama Deva and Lord Sri Shani Deva both are sons of Lord Sri Bhaskara / Lord Sri Surya Deva – they both are termed as “Bhaskari” (children of Bhaskara).

If someone does Ekadashi vrata with bhakti (devotion), there will not be any fear of neither Lord Sri Yama Deva nor of Lord Sri Shani Deva.

Another shloka of Lord Sri Shani Deva:

शने दिनमणे सूनोह्यनेकगुणसन्मणे । अरिष्टं हर मे भीष्टं कुरु मा कुरु संकटं ।। (इति श्री वादिराज तीर्थविरचित श्री शनिस्तोत्रं )

Dasharatha Maharaja (King) has written Sri Shanaishchara stotram as given below:

Meaning of this shloka is as given below: “Shanishchara (Lord Sri Shani Deva) Jayanti” is believed to be the day when Lord Sri Shani Deva, one of the Nava grahas (planets) made its appearance on Earth.

Shanaishchara (Lord Sri Shani Deva) has the capability to create influence on the horoscope of the particular person and in his / her life.

Shanaischara’s (Lord Sri Shani Deva’s) birth day is in Vaishaka masam Krishna paksha Amavasya. Shanaischara’s (Lord Sri Shani Deva’s) was born as the son of Lord Sri Surya Deva and Sri Chhaya Devi.

Story of Lord Sri Shani Deva is as given below:

Lord Sri Surya’s (Sun God) wife Goddess Sri SanGya Devi (श्री संज्ञ्या देवि) is the daughter of Sri Vishwakarma (Devatas’ Engineer / Architect).

Lord Sri Surya Deva begotten Lord Sri Yama Deva, Goddess Sri Yamuna Devi (Yamuna river) and Sri Shradda Deva (that is, the Vaivaswata Manu) from Goddess Sri SanGya Devi.

After giving birth to three children, when Sri SanGya Devi could not sustain the extreme heat of Lord Sri Surya Deva, Sri SanGya Devi left him, but Sri SanGya Devi left her Chhaya (shadow) and went to her father home.

Sri SanGya Devi asked Sri Chhaya Devi to stay as the wife of Lord Sri Surya Deva and told her not to reveal about herself (Sri SanGya Devi) leaving Sri Surya Deva.

Sri Chhaya Devi had told Sri SanGya Devi that if Sri Surya Deva comes to know about the same, she would tell about the truth and leave him.

Sri SanGya Devi’s father sent her back saying that it is not proper to come without the permission of her husband.

But, Sri SanGya Devi didn’t returned to her husband Sri Surya Deva, instead Sri SanGya Devi went to forest and was wandering in the disguise of an horse.

So, Sri Chhaya Devi stayed there in the disguise of Sri SanGya Devi as the wife of Sri Surya Deva, who was not able to notice the fact that Sri SanGya Devi had already left him.

Sri Surya Deva got four children through Sri Chhaya Devi. Sri Shani Deva is the first son of Sri Chhaya Devi and Sri Surya Deva. Shanaishchara is slow in his movement.

Sri Chhaya Devi had two sons with Sri Surya Deva (Sawarni Manu the eighth Manu, the next) and Sri Shani Deva (the god of the planet Saturn), and two daughters Tapti and Vishti.

Story as per Sri Narasimha Purana

As the time passed, Sri Chhaya Devi started neglecting the children of Sri SanGya Devi and was taking care more on her own children.

That is, she showed her stepmother (सौतेली माँ) attitude on the children of Sri SanGya Devi. This made Sri Yama Deva angry and he complained to his father Sri Surya Deva.

Initially Sri Surya Deva didn’t bother about that. After a few and continuous complaints, Sri Surya Deva questioned his wife Sri Chhaya Devi, as to why she was showing partiality to her own children.

This made Sri Chhaya Devi leave Lord Sri Surya Deva, that is, the Sun God.

Now Sri Surya Deva realized that his wife Sri SanGya Devi was not there with him (Sri Surya Deva).

Sri Surya Deva got angry and cursed his son Sri Shani Deva born from Sri Chhaya Devi to be handicapped.

Sri Shani Deva is said to have less power to his legs because of this curse by his own father (Sri Surya Deva) and thus Sri Shani Deva is very slow in his movement and thus he is called as ‘Shanaishchara’.

Later Sri Surya Deva went in search of his wife Sri SanGya Devi, and found that his wife had become an horse.

Sri Surya Deva also became an horse and went to his wife Sri SanGya Devi and asked Sri SanGya Devi to come back to him.

Sri Surya Deva and Sri SanGya Devi (both in the disguise of horse) got two sons called as Ashwini Kumaras.

(The two physicians – these two children were the same who took birth as Nakula and Sahadeva during the Mahabharata period).

Totally Sri Surya Deva has eight children, namely : Three from Sri SanGya Devi, three from Sri Chhaya Devi and two from Sri SanGya Devi again (as horse disguise).

Story as given in Sri Brahma Vaivarta Purana

Once when Lord Ganesha was born, all Devatas / Demigods had come to see the child as he was very handsome and was also very attracting in his looks.

Even Sri Shani Deva had come to see Lord Ganesha. But Sri Shani Deva was hesitating, as he had a curse from his own wife (Sri Shani Deva’s wife) that if he sees any child directly, the child’s head would fall.

But, Goddess Sri Parvati Devi insisted to Lord Sri Shani Deva to come and see the child (Lord Sri Ganesha).

Thus, as soon as Sri Shani Deva saw the child, as his drusti / vision was fierce, and as per curse of his (Sri Shani Deva’s) wife, the head of Lord Ganesha (Ganapathi) fell down.

Now, Goddess Sri Parvati Devi got angry at Sri Shani Deva and also Goddess Sri Parvati Devi cursed Sri Shani Deva to be handicapped and thus, Sri Shani Deva become handicapped and slow in his movement.

As per ‘Sri Brahma Vaivartha Purana’, Lord Sri Vishnu brought the head of an elephant to attach the body of Lord Ganesha and made it to join.

Thus, Lord Ganesha is said to have elephant’s face (This is because, Lord Ganesha was doing the naama smarana / chanting of ‘Sri Vishwambhara roopa / form’ of Lord Sri Vishnu).

Note: We should know that, Sri Vishwambhara roopa (form) of Lord Sri Vishnu’s is his (of Lord Sri Vishnu’s) central face.

graharājō bhava śanē madhvarēṇa haripriyaḥ | śāpōmōghastatō mēdya kin̄cit‌ kanjō bhaviṣyasi || (iti brahma vaivarta purāṇa)

[Note: The difference in the stories of the above said Puranas, may be due to Kalpa bedha / कल्प बेधा / difference of time frame.]

When Goddess Sri Parvati cursed Sri Shani Devi, Sri Surya Deva was upset towards Goddess Sri Parvati and was about to curse Goddess Sri Parvati Devi.

But, by that particular time, Goddess Sri Parvati Devi blessed Sri Shani Devi, that he shall not become fully handicapped, instead Sri Shani Deva shall be a weak and lame man (one who’s movement very slow).

On Sri Shani Deva’s birthday, we must do the daana / donation of sesame (tila / til), sesame oil (tila / til oil), deepa daana (tila / til deepa daana / donation). By making this, Sri Shani Deva becomes happy.

Information about Sade Sati (Sāḍē sātī) (सादे साती) is as given below:

The graha / planet, that is, Sri Shani Dev (planet Saturn), also known as “Manda” (slow in movement), is generally known to affect someone very adversely –

on occasions when Sri Shani Deva occupies certain positions in one’s horoscope like sAdE sAti (सादे साती), that is, 7 and 1/2 years, Ashtama Shani (Saturn in 8th house – 2 1/2 years) etc.

Sri Shani Deva’s vahana / vehicle  – Bird Crow | Sri Shani Deva’s day – Shanivara / Saturday

Sri Shani Deva is called as “भास्करी” / “bhAskari”, since Sri Shani Deva is the son of Sri Surya Deva.

Sri Shani Deva is one among the prominent Nava grahas (nine planets).

Why Sri Shani Deva is called as ‘शनैश्चर’ / ‘shanaischara’: This is because, when compared to other planets, Sri Shani Deva moves very slowly from one राशि / rashi to the other.

‘तरणि नंदना’ / ‘taraNi nandana’ meaning is : Sri Shani is the son of Sri Surya Deva (तरणि नंदना / taraNi nandana is one of the names of Sri Surya Deva).

‘छाया पुत्र’ / ‘chAyAputra’ meaning is : Sri Shani Deva is the son of Sri Chhaya Devi (that is, shadow wife of Sri Surya Deva).
