Just before going to “Why we should chant Krishna (Rama) (Vishnu) (Hari) names“, let us have some brief information.

Yes, it is always great to chant, especially Lord Sri Krishna (Lord Sri Rama) (Lord Sri Vishnu) (Lord Sri Hari) different names.

Our Puranas states that, just by chanting Lord Sri Hari / Sri Vishnu / Sri Rama / Sri Krishna’s names, we can easily get freedom, that is, can get moksha / mukti (a permanent place in Vaikuntha).

Again, yes there are great benefits of chanting Lord Sri Krishna / Lord Sri Rama / Lord Sri Vishnu / Lord Sri Hari’s different names.

Even starting from Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi, Lord Sri Brahma Deva, Lord Sri Mukhya Prana Deva (Lord Sri Vayu Deva – next Lord Sri Brahma Deva), Goddess Sri Sarasvati Devi,

Goddess Sri Bharati Devi (consort of Sri Mukhya Prana Deva – next Goddess Sri Sarasvati Devi), Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Lord Shiva), Goddess Sri Tulasi Devi, Goddess Sri Parvati Devi, Lord Sri Indra Deva,

Lord Sri Surya Deva etc. etc. etc. all do Lord Sri Vishnu / Lord Sri Hari / Lord Sri Krishna / Lord Sri Rama (he has unlimited names) nama smaranam (chanting of names).

We can easily get both material and daivi (Godly) things if we chant Lord Sri Rama / Lord Sri Krishna / Lord Sri Hari / Lord Sri Vishnu’s one or different names.

To understand this in more better way, let us see a great example from our Puranas.

There will be many people who do Suvarna (gold), Gau (cow), Bhoo (land) daanam (donation), but it is rare to find one who has ‘sarva-bhoota-daya’ (Someone who does all types of donations on this earth).

One day, when King Raghu (Lord Sri Rama’s ancestor) was doing Tapas (penance), a Viprottama (a learned and poor Brahmin) approached him and asked for Sharanam (surrender).

Seeing the Viprottama (a learned and poor Brahmin), who was trembling with fear, King Raghu gave Abhayam (not to get afraid of anything and anyone) and asked the reason for his fear.

Meanwhile a Rakshasa (demon) came there saying “leave … leave him”. He said to King Raghu “King! leave him.”

Rakshasa (demon) contnued, “This is the ahaaram (food) that Lord Sri Brahma Deva has decided for me. Why are you protecting my ahaaram (food). I am very hungry”.

King Raghu said “I will not. He, that too a Viprottama (a learned and poor Brahmin), came to me and asked for Sharanam (surrender).”

“A ‘sat-purusha’ (A divine and learned person) always gives Abhayam (fearlessness) to a ‘Sharana-arthi’ (surrendered person).”

King Raghu continued: “Also it is my ‘Kshatriya-dharmam’ (Kshatriya’s duty) to protect this arthi (surrendered person).”

“A person who does ‘Abhaya-daanam’ (fearlessness) will get more ‘punyam’ (good deeds) than one who does all ‘Yagnas-Vratas’ (divine yagnas) etc.”

Continuing, King Raghu said: “How can I cheat a person, to whom I said even giving my life I will protect you?”

“For any papam (sin) there might be a ‘praayash-chittam’ (to clean up bad karmas); but not for a ‘Sharnaagata-hanta’ (someone who kills the surrendered person).”

“I can get you any other ahaaram (food) which you will like. With hunger how much you are suffering, this Vipra (a learned and poor brahmin) is also suffering that much with fear”.

Rakshasa (demon) replied to King Raghu: “Like a Gnyani (knowledgeable person) you talked a lot about ‘anya-samrakshana-dharmam’ (duty of saving others).”

“However you won’t care about my hunger. When the tastiest food I want is before me, you are asking me to ask for some other aharam (food).”

“Now if I die of hunger won’t you get the paapam (sin)? Raja! you don’t have daya (kindness).”

“For Tapas (penance), daya (kindness) is the basis. Nirdaya (ruthlessness) gives paapam (sin). Please save me, I am suffering from hunger. Leave the Vipra (Brahmin)”.

King Raghu then thought like this: “If I leave this Vipra (Brahmin), Rakshasa (demon) will eat him. If I don’t, Rakshasa (demon) may die of hunger. Without any doubt in either case I will get the paapam (sin). What do to?”.

Then he remembered his Guru, Vasishtha Maharshi’s bodha (teachings) — “Hari naama smaranam (chanting of Lord Sri Vishnu’s name) is the only way in case of difficulties”.

So, King Raghu, with ‘nishchala chittam’ (firm mind), did Lord Sri Hari (Vishnu / Rama / Krishna) ‘dhyanam’ (chanting) and said “Paatu maam Bhagavaan Vishnuh”.

Just on hearing the ‘Hari naamam’ (Lord Sri Vishnu’s name), the Rakshasa (demon) got ‘Divya-aakruti’ (divine body) and said:

“I am a King by name Shatadyumna and got this ‘ghora-roopam’ (heinous form) because of Vashishtha Maharshi’s curse, for my wicked work.”

“Because of hearing to ‘Divya-Hari-naamam’ (divine Hari names), that too from a Dharmaatma (someone who follows Dharma), Tapasvi (a great follower of Dharma) like you, I got ‘Vimukti’ (freedom)”.

The Vipra (Brahmin) also reached home safely.

Seeing this, Lord Sri Brahma Deva appeared before King Raghu and said: “O Mahiipaala (The Kind of the world)! your Dharma-vartanam (Dharma behavior) impressed Me. Please aboard this Divya-vimaanam (divine airplane) and come to Satyalokam (Brahma’s planet)”.

This Divya-gaatha (divine story) was told by Maharishi Sri Bhrigu to Shaunaka Muni.
