Just before going to “Tirupati 7 hills names (with information) in English | Tirupati 7 hills story | 7 Kondalu names in English | Information about Sapthagiri hills | Tirupati (Tirumala) hills names in different Yugas“, let us have some brief information.

The Tirumala or Venkatachalam or Venkatadri hills is about 853 m height and it is located in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, India.

Tirumala or Venkatachalam or Venkatadri hill is one of the ‘saptagiri’ (sapthagiri), that is, seven divine peaks of the Tirumala Tirupati Hills located in the temple town of Tirupati.

This place is called as Vaikuntha of earth, as svayam (directly) Lord Sri Vishnu had come here and is been staying as Lord Sri Venkateswara or Lord Sri Srinivasa or Lord Balaji since ages.

The Tirumala (Tirupati hills) Lord Sri Venkateswara or Lord Sri Srinivasa or Lord Balaji divine Temple is located on this giri / hill.

It is dedicated to the Lord Sri Venkateshwara, a direct avatar or incarnation of Lord Sri Vishnu. Few people also call Lord Sri Venkateshwara / Srinivasa as Lord Balaji.

Tirupati 7 hills (Tirumala) names are as given below:

1. Vrushabachala (Vrushabadri) : In Krita Yuga / Satya Yuga, it’s name was “Vrushabachala or Vrushabadri or Vrushabachalam”. This name came because Lord Sri Vishnu defeated a demon (asura) named Vrushabasura.

2. Anjanachala (Anjanadri) : In Tretayuga, it’s name was “Anjanachala or Anjanadri or Anjanachalam”. This name came because Sri Anjana Devi, that is, the mother of Anjaneya (Hanuman) had done the penance in this hill.

3. Sheshachala (Sheshadri) : In Dvaparayuga, it’s name was “Sheshachala or Sheshadri or Sheshachalam”. This name came because Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga was defeated by Lord Sri Vayu Deva on this hill

This fight was fought as Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga had the Asura-vesha (demonic wrath) inside him and because of this Asura-vesha, Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga had started to think himself to be greater than Lord Sri Vayu Deva.

To nullify this Asuravesha, Lord Sri Vayu Deva defeated Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga. And thus the Asuravesha of Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga was suppressed Lord by Sri Vayu Deva.

(Please remember that Lord Sri Vayu Deva will become the next Lord Sri Brahma Deva in the next Kalpa. Lord Sri Hanuman, Bhimasena and Sri Madhvacharya Ji are the avatars of Lord Sri Vayu Deva).

4. Venkatachala or Venkatadri : In Kali Yuga, it’s name is “Venkatachala or Venkatadri or Venkatachalam”. This name came because Lord Sri Venkateshvara or Venkateswara (other name of Lord Sri Srinivasa / Balaji) gets married with Sri Padmavati Devi.

Why Tirupati hills (Tirumala) was called as Vrushabachala or Vrushabachalam or Vrushabadri in Krita Yuga / Satya Yuga:

In Krita Yuga / Satya Yuga there lived a demon or asura and his name was Vrushabasura (Vrishabasura). Vrushabasura used to cause problems and nuisance to Rishis, Saints, Munis and other Sajjanas who were doing the yagna, yaaga etc.

For this reason, all the Rishis, Saints, Munis and Sajjanas approached Lord Sri Vishnu for help.

This demon or asura Vrishabasura used to worship Lord Sri Narasimha’s Shaligrama (Saligrama) daily by having trikaala snana (three time bath) with full devotion.

After the pooja, Vrushabasura used to offer his own head by cutting from his sword to Lord Sri Narasimha.

Night view of the present Tirupati / Tirumalai temple.

But, here every time Vrushabasura was cutting his head, the head used to come back immediately. Vrishabasura did like this for 5,000 years.

Lord Sri Vishnu came near Vrushabasura, and this demon or asura did the full ‘saastanga namaskaram’ to Lord Sri Vishnu.

Bhagavan Sri Vishnu asked him to seek some boon. But this demon or asura asked Lord Sri Vishnu to fight with him as a boon.

Lord Sri Vishnu accepted this and fight started between Vrushabasura and Lord Sri Srinivasa (Lord Sri Vishnu).

Whatever Lord Sri Srinivasa (Lord Sri Vishnu) used to do, this asura also used to do the same thing.

Thus, Bhagavan Sri Vishnu asked Lord Sri Garuda Raja to come, and Lord Sri Vishnu sat on the Great bird Lord Sri Garuda Raja and removed Vrushabasura’s head with Lord Sri Vishnu’s Sudarshana Chakra.

Before his death, Vrushabasura asked Lord Sri Vishnu to keep his name for the hill where he stayed for so long.

Our Lord Sri Vishnu (Lord Sri Srinivasa) is called as ‘Karunasagara’. Thus Lord Sri Vishnu accepted this request and kept the name as Vrushabacalam or Vrushabadri.

Thus in Krita Yuga / Satya Yuga, those hills were called as Vrushabachalam or Vrushabadri.

Background of this demon or asura Vrushabasura or Vrishabasura

Usually in everybody at least two jeevis (beings) live. One will be dharmika (good deeds) and another will be adharmika (bad deeds).

Similarly in Vrushabhasura also, there used to live two jeevis (beings), that is, one was “Dharma”, who in ‘Vaivasvata Manvantara’ was living, who did the penance to Lord Sri Varaha (BhuVaraha) and Lord Sri Varaha blessed him and thus his name was used as the name of the hill.

The name was called as “Vrushabha”. The other is Vrushabhasura, an asura (demon).

Only because in the jeeva (being) Dharma was there inside, this asura (demon) used to do Shaligrama shila pooja (that is, pooja of Lord Sri Vishnu), with trikaala (three time) snaana / bath.

Also, because Vrushabhasura was having Rakshasavista (presence of demonic being), he used to cause problems and nuisance to Rishis, Saints, Munis, Sajjanas etc.

Why Tirupati hills (Tirumala) was called as Anjanachalam or Anjanachala or Anjanadri Vrushabadri in Treta Yuga:

During Treta Yuga, there lived an asura (demon) named Kesari. Kesari was a great devotee of Lord Sri Vayu Deva. Kesari prayed the ‘antaryami’ (God present inside) of Lord Shiva, that is, to Lord Sri Vishnu by doing tapas.

(This Kesari is different and Lord Sri Hanuman father Kesari different.)

When Lord Sri Vishnu came in front of Kesari, Kesari asked to give him a son who will be a great devotee of Lord Sri Vishnu.

Lord Sri Vishnu told him that since Kesari does not have the qualification to get a son, he will give him a daughter, and in her he will get grandson, who will be a great devotee of Lord Sri Vishnu. After some time, this Kesari got a daughter.

Since this daughter removed her father’s eye problem, she was called as “Anjana”. Anjana was married to another vanara (monkey) named Kesari.

This Kesari had killed ‘Shambasadhana’ named asura (demon), who was giving trouble to Rishis and good people.

Pleased with the killing of the asura (demon), again the Rishis also blessed him with a ‘Bhagavatottama putra’ (a son who is best among the Lord Sri Vishnu devotees).

While, Anjana did the tapas for 12 years in a hill called ‘Narayana Parvata’, as advised by Maharshi Matanga.

Anjana got the permission of her husband and Rishis and used to take bath in ‘Swami Pushkarini’ and was also doing ‘Ashvattha Pradakshina’ (circling of the Ashvattha tree).

With this Anjana was also doing Lord Sri Varaha (BhuVaraha) darshan, and ‘tirthodaka paana’ (drinking the water tirtha).

With this Anjana was also observing fast and had kept aside all bhoga (materialistic things) and did the penance.

After completion of one year, Lord Sri Vayu Deva used to come daily and was giving a fruit daily to Anjana.

Lord Sri Vayu Deva, one day gave the fruit with his “veerya” and also blessed Anjana. During her Penance period, she used to take only wind (air) as her food and nothing else.

Anjana did the penance for 12,000 abdhi kaalas. After this, Anjana got pregnant and Anjana gave birth in her 10th month of pregnancy. This child was named as “Hanuman or Anjaneya”.

In this way, since Anjana did the penance for a long period in this mountain, this hill came to be known as “Anjanachalam or Anjanadri”.

Why Tirupati hills (Tirumala) was called as Sheshachalam or Sheshachala or Sheshadri in Dvapara Yuga:

In Dvapara Yuga, once Lord Sri Vishnu, asked Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga to guard Vaikuntha gate and Lord Sri Vishnu was with Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi. At that time, Lord Sri Vayu Deva came there to see Lord Sri Lakshmi Narayana (Vishnu).

But, Lord Sri Vayu Deva was stopped by Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga, who had ‘kali-avesha’ (Kali Yuga’s Kali wrath) inside him at that time.

Lord Sri Vayu Deva who never ever makes any mistake reminded Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga about what had happened when ‘Jaya-Vijaya’ (Vaikuntha gate keepers) stopped Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana Sanatakumara sages.

(Please remember that Lord Sri Vayu Deva is the same as Lord Sri Hanuman / Bhimasena / Sri Madhvacharya Ji.)

Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga told Lord Sri Vayu Deva that he is the ‘shayana’ / bed of Lord Sri Vishnu and he is the supreme than Lord Sri Brahma Deva and Lord Sri Vayu Deva.

For this, Lord Sri Vayu Deva said to Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga that, even though a cat enters the bed of the king, it can’t be superior than an elephant standing outside.

When the conversation between Lord Sri Vayu Deva and Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga continued for long period, Lord Sri Vishnu came before them, and asked them about the issue.

Lord Sri Vishnu suggested to test who is supreme between the two. Lord Sri Vishnu told Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga to tie ‘Anandadri hill’ (today’s Tirumala – son of Meru Mount), with his body as the rope as tightly as possible.

Lord Sri Vishnu asked Lord Sri Vayu Deva to move the mountain to test who is supreme amongst them.

With this, Lord Sri Vayu Deva just touched it very softly (sparsha) with his single finger, and with this soft touch, ‘Anandadri’ (Today’s Tirumala) was moved over 51,000 yojana near Suvarnamukhi river basin.

In this way, Lord Sri Vayu Deva was declared as supreme than Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga. After this, Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga, confessed before Lord Sri Vayu Deva, who in turn blessed him.

In this way, this mountain was given the name Sheshachala or Sheshachalam or Sheshadri, named after Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga, who was defeated in the fight with Lord Sri Vayu Deva.

(Shesha + achala = a hill which was not shaken by Shesha.)

Why Tirupati hills (Tirumala) is called as Venkatachalam or Venkatachala or Venkatadri in Kali Yuga:

वें पापं कटते यस्मात्पादाहन शक्तित: । वेंकटाचल इत्येव नाम देवास्तदा जगु: ।

ವೇಂ ಪಾಪಂ ಕಟತೇ ಯಸ್ಮಾತ್ಪಾದಾಹನ ಶಕ್ತಿತ: | ವೇಂಕಟಾಚಲ ಇತ್ಯೇವ ನಾಮ ದೇವಾಸ್ತದಾ ಜಗು: |

vēṁ pāpaṁ kaṭatē yasmātpādāhana śaktita: | vēṅkaṭācala ityēva nāma dēvāstadā jagu: |

Meaning of this shloka : As Lord Sri Vishnu came from Vaikuntha and stayed in this parvata / mountain, this place came to be known as Venkatachala in Kali Yuga.

Once upon a time, there lived a Brahmana (Brahmin) and his name was Purandara in Kalahasti (Near Tirumala hills in today’s Tirupati).

Brahmana (Brahmin) was a satya-vadi (truthful), he was well maintaining brahmanatva (principles of Brahmana / Brahmin), also he was doing somayaaga (A type of Yagna).

This Brahmana (Brahmin) neither had any children nor had any wish for children. Brahmana was not even bothered that he was childless.

But still, this Brahmana got a son at his old age, and this child’s name was “Madhava”.

Madhava got Upanayana (wearing of Janeu) at the age of eight, Madhava got all types of education, and was well versed in ‘Chaturveda’ (Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Atharvana Veda, Yajur Veda), Shiksha, Vyakarana, Chandassu, Jyotishya, Meemaamsa and also other / sakala shastras (texts).

Madhava got married with a girl called ‘Chandralekha’. Chandralekha was a pativrata (who serves her husband divinely), and was assisting her husband in all his yaagas, yagnas and other works.

One fine day, Madhava Brahmana (Brahmin) wished to get intimate with her in the morning time itself.

But, the ‘pativrata naari’ (divine woman) Chandralekha said that this is not correct according to Dharma, as there are so many Rishis and their aged parents at their place. Getting intimate in the morning is against Dharma.

But, Madhava Brahmana insisted that they shall get intimate, so Chandralekha told him as the parents are there, let us go out somewhere and get intimate somewhere faraway from the house.

Saying this, Chandralekha went out with a vessel to bring water. Madhava Brahmana also followed her and reached a park nearby.

There, Madhava Brahmana saw a beautiful woman, whose name was “Kuntala” and this woman was from a lower caste.

As soon as Madhava Brahmana saw Kuntala, he was attracted by her beauty and asked his wife to go home.

As soon as Madhava Brahmana’s wife went home, Madhava Brahmana came near this woman and enquired about her name, father, place, caste, etc.

Madhava Brahmana also asked her to marry him. But, she told that she is from a lower caste and that too from a Chaandala (someone who eats dog meat) family. She eats meat and drinks alcohol and told him not to come near her.

Kuntala told Madhava Brahmana, that you are a Brahmana, who has studied Vedas, shastras etc. and not suitable for him to marry her. But Madhava Brahmana forced Kuntala to marry him.

Kuntala told Madhava Brahmana that as she is from a Chaandala family, by touching or getting intimate with her will result in Naraka Loka (Hell).

Kuntala told Madhava Brahmana that as you are a Brahmana, you have all the samskaras, like Jata samskaram, jaatakarma, naama karana, anna-prashana, choula, upanayana, agnisakshi vivaha, vedadhyana, nitya deva pooja, Vishnu naivedya anna, etc.

Also Kuntala told Madhava Brahmana that her legs are ‘paashana sama’ (legs are equal to poison) as she is a prostitute. So saying thus, Kuntala tried to run away.

But, Madhava Brahmana chased her and held her and became intimate with her forcefully.

Then, Kuntala told him that you have lost your Brahmanya (now Madhava is not a Brahamana), and asked Madhava to remove the Yagnopaveeta (Janeu), remove the Shikha (matted hairs), gave him Gau-maamsa (beef) for eating.

Also, Kuntala gave Madhava wine for drinking, and thus Madhava stopped all ‘Brahmanya karmaas’ (Brahmin’s works) and stayed with her for 12 years. Madhava did not even go to his house also.

After 12 years of his stay with Kuntala, Kuntala died and at this point now he realized his own mistake.

At the same time a king and their people from northern India came touring towards ‘Varaha parvata’ (hill).

This Madhava used to follow them, and used to eat the leftover of these people. Madhava followed them to Sheshachalam (Today’s Tirumala) also.

In Sheshachalam those king’s men took the bath in ‘Kapila Tirtha’ (river), did sankalpa, got keshavapana (hair removal). Again took bath, gave ‘pitru pitaamahaadi paarvana shraaddha’ (ancestors rituals).

Seeing all these, Madhava also followed them, took bath, vapana, punaha (again) bath etc. Madhava took bath in ‘Kapila Tirtha’, and gave pinda made of mud and did pinda pradhana.

By doing so, Madhava lost all the old sins (bad Karmas. Those who do ‘Pitru Shraaddha’, pinda pradhana in Kapila Tirtha in Sheshachala or Sheshadri will get moksha (place in Vaikuntha).

Madhava Brahmana did so in Vaikuntha hill by giving pinda pradhana. Next day, this Madhava Brahmana climbed the Sheshachala hill (today’s Tirumala) by walking following those King’s men.

Wherever these King’s men were going, they used to do the kathana (telling the stories) of Lord Sri Vishnu in Garudadri, Anjanadri, etc.

As soon as Madhava Brahmana entered Venkatadri (today’s Tirumala), by touch itself his Kuntala’s ‘sahavaasa paapa phala’ (fruits of companionship with Kuntala),

‘Maatru-Pita-patni tyaaga paapa phala’ (mother-father-wife’s sacrifice fruits), ‘maamsa bhakshana’ (meat eating), ‘Madya paana papa’ (sin of drinking alcohol) all were burnt by the agni (fire) born in his body itself through vomiting.

(Please remember that, all these didn’t happened in one or two days, but it took very time. Sins are easy to perform, but very hard to get rid of it.)

Then, Lord Sri Brahma Deva came near Madhava Brahmana and asked him to take bath in ‘Svami Pushkarini’ and do namaskaram to Lord Sri BhuVaraha (Varaha) and finally Madhava Brahmana die.

Lord Sri Brahma Deva also told him that Madhava Brahmana will born as a king as the son of Sudharma, by a name called ‘Akasha Raja’ to become the king of ‘Tonda Desha’ (A place called Tonda) and have Narayanapura as his capital.

Lord Sri Brahma Deva also told Madhava Brahmana that ‘Saakshaat’ (directly) Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi will born as his daughter (Padmavati Devi) and Lord Sri Vishnu (Lord Sri Srinivasa) will be his son-in-law.

In this way, Lord Sri Brahma Deva gave the boon to Madhava Brahmana, that by sparsha (touch) of the Venkatadri (today’s Tirumala) hill, all his ‘paapaa karmas’ (bad sins) are removed.

Thus, Sheshadri or Anjanadri or Vrushabadri came to be called as  Venkatachalam or Venkatachala or Venkatadri. Here “Ven / वें = all paapaas (sins), kata / कटते – to cut down or burn down, dri = hill.

Thus, all the Devatas (Demigods) called it as Venkatachala or Venkatachalam or Venkatadri (Today’s Tirumala / Tirupati 7 hills).

One who does the smarana (meditation) of Venkatachala hill in the morning will have all the punya (good deeds) of Sahasraavarti (thousand times bath) at Ganges river and Setu yatra (Rameshwaram – Setu Bandana).

Venkatachala hill removes all our paapaas / sins. That is why it is called as ‘Venkatachala’, that is, ‘remover of all the sins / egos / pride’.

This is the place where Lord Sri Brahma Deva gave a boon to Madhava Brahmana and with the sparsha (soft touch) all his sins were removed.

Darshanam of Venkatachala hill gives great punya (good deeds) more than 1,000 times than Kashi and Rameshvaram.

Information about the vaibhava (glory) of Venkatadri or Venkatachalam or Venkatachal is as given below:

For the varnana (praise) of Venkatadri, even Lord Sri Adishesha Naaga who has 1,000 heads, 6 headed Shanmukha (Kartikeya), 6 headed Lord Shiva, 4 headed Lord Sri Brahma Deva also not fully capable.

guru strī gamanāścandrō ahalyā saṅgatō hari: | Surāpānāśca śukrastu suvarṇa hariṇādbali: |

In this same Venkatadri hill (Today’s Tirumala), Devatas (Demigods) like Lord Sri Surya Deva, Lord Sri Chandra Deva, Lord Sri Indra Deva and others got the parihara (relief) of their paapaas (sins) of gurudhaaraabhigamana (गुरुधाराभीगमन ) and other paapaas.

Sukrachaarya was freed of his paapaa (sins) of drinking surapaana (alcohol).

In Venkatachala hill (today’s Tirumala), Lord Sri Varaha Svami (Varaha or BhuVaraha) is there with Dharaadevi (Bhudevi / mother earth), that is why it is called as “Varaha kshetram” (A place which belongs to Lord Sri Varaha).

For the Jnaanis (knowledgeable people), this parvata / hill looks like golden hill, so it is called as Kanakadri (kanaka in Sanskrit means gold).

Why Tirupati hills (Tirumala) is called as Narayanachalam or Narayanachala or Narayanadri:

A Brahmana (Brahmin) named Narayana did the tapas (penance) here, so it is called as Narayanadri or Narayanachalam or Narayanachala.

Why Tirupati hills (Tirumala) is called as Vaikunthadri or Garudadri:

Venkatadri (Tirumala hills) is brought directly from Vaikuntha by svayam (directly) Lord Sri Garuda Deva, so it is Vaikunthadri or Garudadri.

Why Tirupati hills (Tirumala) is called as Naarasimhadri or Simhadri:

For the ‘samrakshanam’ (safeguarding) of Prahlada, Lord Sri Narasimha appeared here itself and thus is called as Naarasimhadri or Simhadri.

Why Tirupati hills (Tirumala) is called as Anjanadri:

Sri Anjana Devi, the mother of Sri Hanuman, did the tapas here, so it is known as Anjanadri.

Why Tirupati hills (Tirumala) is called as Neeladri:

Neela (Ramayana period Nala-Neela’s Neela) named monkey was staying here and so it is called as Neelaadri.

Kalau tō bhārata varṣē mānuṣaṁ janma durlabhaṁ | tatō vēṅkaṭa yātrā ca durlabhā sukr̥taṁ vināḥ ||

Meaning of this shloka : During Kali Yuga getting Manushya janma (human life) is itself is very very rare and difficult and in that Venkatadri parvata yaatra (pilgrimage to Venkatadri / Tirumala / Tirupati hills) is highly rare.

Note : If we do not have ‘poorva janma punya vishesha’ (good deeds of our earlier lives), it is not possible at all. Thus try to do more and more good Karmas.
