Just before going to “Bharadvaja Maharshi information (facts, details, story, Ramayana, Mahabharata) | Who is the wife of Rishi Bhardwaj? | Who is Bharadwaj Muni? | How was Bhardwaj Rishi born? | What is the Speciality of Bharadwaj gotra?“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

Generally Maharishi Bharadvaja is pronounced as भरद्वाज (bharadvāja) or Bharadwaj or Bharadvaj or Bhardwaj or Bhardvaj or Bharadwaja, etc.

In Sanskrit Maharishi Bharadvaja is written as : भरद्वाज (bharadvāja). | Maharishi Bharadvaja parents names are : Brihaspati (father) and Mamata (mother). | Maharishi Bharadvaja wife name is : Susheela (consort). |

Maharishi Bharadvaja children names are : Garga, Drona and Ilavida. | Maharishi Bharadvaja siblings names are : Kacha, Revati, KesariMaharshi Bharadwaja was brought up by Bharata (Bharat) Chakravarti (भरत चक्रवर्ती) (son of King Dushyanta and Shakuntala).

Maharishi Bharadwaja’s full name in Vedic texts is called as ‘Bharadwaja Barhaspatya‘, the last name refers to his father and Guru of the Devatas (Demigods) Guru Brihaspati.

Few important points about Maharshi Bharadwaja is as given below:

1. Lord Sri Rama Chandra Prabhu had stayed in Maharshi Bharadwaja’s ashrama (hermitage) during his vanavasa (forest exile). 2. In the vamsha / vansh / family of Maharshi Bharadwaja, there are many Veda drashtaara Rishis (Learnt Vedic Sages).

3. In the Pancharatra, there is one grantha (text) named Bharadwaja samhita (sanhita). 4. There is ‘Bharadwaja Smriti’ in the ‘Padma Purana’ as given below:

भरध्वाज नमस्तुभ्यं सदा ध्यानपरायण ।
महाजटिलधर्मात्मन् पापं संहर मे सदा ।

ಭರಧ್ವಾಜ ನಮಸ್ತುಭ್ಯಂ ಸದಾ ಧ್ಯಾನಪರಾಯಣ |
ಮಹಾಜಟಿಲಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮನ್ ಪಾಪಂ ಸಂಹರ ಮೇ ಸದಾ |

bharadhvāja namastubhyaṁ sadā dhyānaparāyaṇa |
mahājaṭiladharmātman pāpaṁ sanhara mē sadā |

Maharshi Bharadwaja was born as the son of Guru Sri Brihaspati (Guru of Devatas / Demigods). Later Guru Sri Brihaspati himself was born as the son of Maharshi Bharadwaja with the name ‘Dronacharya’ (Guru for Pandavas and Kauravas).

After Maharshi Bharadwaja’s birth, his mother Sri Mamata Devi refused to take care of her child. Also, Maharshi Bharadwaja’s father Guru Sri Brihaspati refused to take care of his child. Thus, the ‘Marud Gana’ came forward to take care of Maharshi Bharadwaja’s and was handed over to Bharata (Bharat) Chakravarti.

Bharata (Bharat) Chakravarti had three wives and all had one child each. But none was so smart as Bharata (Bharat) Chakravarti. But to ensure that Bharata (Bharat) Chakravarti is not angry at them, they (three wives) killed their children.

Bharata (Bharat) Chakravarti was completely clueless about this and he was worried that who would be his successor. Then the Devatas (Demigods) gave the child Maharshi Bharadwaja to the king (Bharata Chakravarti).

This child was brought up nicely by the Bharata (Bharat) Chakravarti himself as his own son and finally Maharshi Bharadwaja was declared as Bharata Chakravarti’s successor. On the other hand, Maharshi Bharadwaja was not at all interested in the political affairs.

Maharshi Bharadwaja instructed the king Bharata (Bharat) Chakravarti to do several yajna and yagas and thus Bharata (Bharat) Chakravarti got one more son by the name Brumanyu. Thus, this Brumanyu was made the king and Maharshi Bharadwaja left for penance to the forest.

More information about Maharishi Bharadwaja is as given below:

Maharishi Bharadvaja was one of the greatest and divine Hindu Maharishis (Sages) descendant of Maharishi Angirasa (Angiras). Maharishi Bharadwja’s accomplishments are very proudly given in the different Puranas, Mahabharata, Ramayana, etc.

Maharishi Bharadvaja is one of the Saptarishis (Saptarshis), that is, one among the ‘Seven Great and Divine Sages’ in the present Manvantara. Others being Maharishi Atri, Maharishi Vasishtha, Maharishi Vishvamitra, Maharishi Gautama, Maharishi Jamadagni and Maharishi Kashyapa.

Maharishi Bhardwaj was a Rishi (Sage) of the ancient Vedic times. Maharishi Bharadvaj was the son of Devatas’ (Demigods) Guru Brihaspati (He is Guru for the Devatas starting from Lord Sri Indra Deva, Lord Sri Surya Deva, etc.)

Maharishi Bharadwaja attained extraordinary scholarship during the ancient Vedic times itself. Maharishi Bharadwaj had the great power of meditation. He is also the author of Ayurveda (आयुर्वेद) (āyurvēda).

Maharishi Bharadwaja’s ashram (hermitage) still exists at the holy Prayag (Prayagraj) in Uttar Pradesh. As said above, Maharishi Bharadwaja was the son of Guru Brihaspati. Guru Brihaspati was the son of Maharishi Angirasa (Angiras).

These 3 Rishis (Maharishi Bharadwaja, Guru Brihaspati and Maharishi Angirasa) are called the ‘Traya Rishis’, that is, three Sages of the Bharadwaja Gotra.

Guru Dronacharya, the royal Guru of both Pandavas and Kauravas in the epic Mahabharata was the son of this same Maharishi (Sage) Bharadwaja. Guru Dronacharya was a master of advanced military arts, including the Devastras (Demigod’s weapons).

Maharishi Bharadwaja married Susheela and had a son called Garga (later was called as Gargacharya). Maharishi Bharadwaja’s son Dronacharya (Drona) was born as a result of his attraction to an Apsara Ghritachi.

Maharishi Bharadwaja trained Drona in all types of weaponry. Drona also learnt the use of weapons from Agnivesha, Lord Parasurama’s student and also from Lord Parasurama himself too. After sometime, Dronacharya went on to teach the weaponry to the Pandavas and Kauravas.

Dronacharya has a son called Ashwatthama who could wield weapons, but not withdraw them as he had insufficient self control over those weapons. (Note : Ashwatthama is an avatar of Lord Shiva himself.)

Maharishi Bharadwaja had a daughter called ‘Devavarnini‘. Rishi Yajnavalkya, the author of the ‘Satapatha Brahmana‘ was a descendant of Maharishi Bharadwaja. The second wife of Yajnavalkya, that is, Katyayani was the daughter of Maharishi Bharadwaja himself.

Information about Maharishi Bharadwaja achievements and contributions is as given below:

Maharishi Bharadwaja’s Vedic mantras were placed in the sixth Mandala of the Rig Veda by Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa. [Note : Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa Ji is an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu.] Dharmasutra and Srautasutra were written by Maharishi Bharadwaja.

The manuscript of the latter was in ‘Pandu‘ script and is available with the Vishvavidyalaya of Mumbai even today.

Maharishi Bharadwaja was a great grammarian. As per the Rktantra, pratisakhya of the Samaveda, Lord Sri Brahma taught grammar to Guru Brihaspati who taught it to Lord Sri Indra Deva, who in turn taught it to Maharishi Bharadwaja.

Panini, Rkpratisakhya and Taittiriya have quoted and discussed about Maharishi Bharadwaja about grammar. Kautilya (Chanakya) has quoted Maharishi Bharadwaja on politics in his treatise ‘Kautilya Arthasastra‘.

Maharishi Bharadwaja had an unquenchable thirst for the knowledge of the Vedas and in addition to his studies, did tapas (penance) for Lord Sri Indra Deva for long life for more knowledge. Maharishi Bharadwaja also did tapas (penance) upon Lord Shiva and Goddess Sri Parvati Devi for more Vedic knowledge.

Maharishi Bharadwaja was a disciple of Maharishi Gautama and also as well as of Maharishi Valmiki. Maharishi Bharadwaja was a first hand witness to the incident of the Krauncha birds, where Valmiki uttered his first shloka (sloka) (hymn) of the epic Ramayana.

Maharishi Bharadwaja had zero-ego. He spent a major part of his life spreading Vedic knowledge as per a command of Lord Sri Indra Deva. Among all the seven gotras Bharadvaja is the longest chain. Bharadvāja gotra has more than 1400 sub-branches.

Information about Maharishi Bharadwaja in Ramayana is as given below:

In Ramayaṇa, Lord Sri Rama along with Goddess Sri Sita Devi and Lakshmana went on forest exile on own for maintaining the dharma / words of his father Dasharatha.

Lord Sri Rama along with Goddess Sri Sita Devi and Lakshmana went through many forest regions starting from crossing river Ganga with help of Guha (head clansman) and a friend of Lord Sri Rama.

As Lord Sri Rama traveled, he visited many Maharishi’s Ashrams (hermitages) and met many Maharishis and Rishis (Sages) including Maharishi Agastya, Maharishi Gautama, Maharishi Bharadwaja, etc.

Lord Sri Rama and others rested in Maharishi Bharadwaja’s ashram (hermitage) when they were crossing Prayag (Prayagraj) and accepted his offerings as great sages knew that: Lord Sri Rama is an avatar Lord Sri Vishnu, Goddess Sri Sita Devi is an avatar of Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi and Lakshmana is an avatar of Lord Sri Adishesha Naga.

Maharishi Bharadwaja and Bharata (Lord Sri Rama’s brother) meeting in the forest during Lord Sri Rama’s forest exile:

Bharata (Bharat) (Lord Sri Rama’s brother) after completing the 13 days rituals of his father Dasharatha (death ceremonies) comes to meet Lord Sri Rama.

Along with Bharata (Bharat), his three mothers Kausalya Devi, Sumitra Devi & Kaikeyi Devi, brother Shatrughna and lakhs of people, thousands of horses, elephants, chariots, etc. also were accompanied, so that, they can try to persuade and request Lord Sri Rama to come back home (to Ayodhya).

On the way, all these people and others enter the ashrama (hermitage) of Maharishi Bharadwaja.

Maharishi Bharadwaja with his great and divine power, calls upon many Devatas (Demigods) to arrange for all the required things like: food, shelter, water, clothes, jewelry, etc. for these lakhs of people and others.

As per the wishes of Maharishi Bharadwaja, all the Devatas (Demigods) arrange the required things to these lakhs of people and others. In the meanwhile, Maharishi Bharadwaja does ‘sashtanga namaskara‘ to Maharishi Vasishtha, as Maharishi Bharadwaja was much junior compared to Maharishi Vasishtha.

Earlier Kaikeyi Devi had not listened to the words of Maharishi Vasishtha and other elderly people about Lord Sri Rama’s forest exile.

Seeing all these greatness of Maharishi Vasishtha and Maharishi Bharadwaja, Kaikeyi Devi feels ashamed and guilty of her earlier works and asks for forgiveness to all the elderly and learnt people.

Maharishi Bharadvaja Stotram (hymn) is as given below:

जटिलं तपसा सिद्धं यग्न सूत्राक्षधारीनं |
कुमंडलुधरं सत्यं भरद्वाजं नतोस्म्यहं |

ಜಟಿಲಂ ತಪಸಾ ಸಿದ್ಧಂ ಯಜ್ಞಸೂತ್ರಾಕ್ಷಧಾರಿಣಂ |

  • Virender Maurya

Some of the information is not correct like Sage Bharadwaj is Sage Valmiki as Mahabharat happens in Dwapur yuga and Ramayan in Treta yugya. Valmik is from Treta yugya and Bharadwaj is from Dwapar

    • Dear Virender Maurya Ji,
Thanks for your comments. Rishi Valmiki was also present during the Dvapara Yuga too. Even at the early Kali Yuga Rishi Valmiki are present when Janamejaya asks questions about Lord Krishna and Pandavas to Rishi Vaishampayana.
      Subhamastu!
