Just before going to know about “Is Dattatreya confluence of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh | Lord Dattatreya has 3 faces or 1 face“, let us know few basic points of Lord Dattatreya.

Lord Dattatreya is an avatar of Lord Vishnu himself and there is no difference between Lord Vishnu and Lord Dattatreya.

Lord Dattatreya parents names are Maharishi Atri (father) and Anasuya (mother). His two brothers are Rishi Durvasa and Chandra.

Now, let us understand, “Does Lord Dattatreya has 3 faces or 1 face” with the below explanation.

As per our Puranas, the Atri Maharshi and Anasuya Devi are the parents of the Lord Dattatreya as said above.

The main point to be noted here is that, Atri Maharishi and Anasuya Devi couple had three children namely:

Lord Dattatreya (he is an avatar of Lord Vishnu), Durvasa Muni (he is avatar of Lord Shiva) and Chandra

(Since Lord Brahma Deva doesn’t take avatar on this earth, he becomes part of Chandra Deva and thus the name Chandra).

Meaning of the name Dattatreya:

The name Dattatreya meaning is, Lord Vishnu gives himself as a Datta (donates himself) to Atri Maharishi and also since Lord Vishnu (Dattatreya) is the son of Atri Maharshi, he becomes the Atreya, that is, son of Atri Maharishi.

Here Dattatreya = Datta + Atreya = Donates himself + To Atri (Son of Atri). Here Atreya means son of Atri and not three (tri).

Just like Anjaneya is the son of Mother Anjana. Similarly, Dattatreya is the son of Atri.

Here Anjaneya = Anjana + Neya = Son of Anjana Devi. Similarly, Dattatreya is the son of Atri Maharishi.

Dattatreya is avatar of only Lord Vishnu and he doesn’t has 3 faces.

In fact, the other two, that is, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma (as part of Chandra Deva) takes two different forms.

That is, the two others are Lord Shiva (Durvasa Rishi) and Lord Brahma (as part of Chandra Deva).

As said above, Lord Shiva takes the avatar of Durvasa Rishi and similarly Lord Brahma (as part of Chandra Deva) takes the avatar of Chandra.

It is only gossip and misinterpretation that, Lord Dattatreya has 3 faces.

This is absolutely incorrect as per our Hindu Puranas. No where in our Puranas it is mentioned that Lord Dattatreya has 3 faces.

Yes, Lord Dattatreya has only 1 face and other two are Lord Shiva as Durvasa Rishi and Lord Brahma (as part of Chandra Deva) as Chandra.

Here all 3 are different. That is, Lord Vishnu is Lord Dattatreya, Lord Brahma is Chandra and Lord Shiva is Durvasa Muni. And all these 3 have their own different and unique bodies.

All have their own and unique faces and all are different. That is, Lord Dattatreya is different, Chandra is different and Durvasa Muni is different.

We usually hear about Durvasa Muni in different situations like in the story of Ambarisha Maharaja.

Also, during the exile period of Pancha Pandavas. Here Duryodhana sends Durvasa Muni to meet Pancha Pandavas in the forest.

Final explanation : Lord Dattatreya has only 1 face and other two are his brothers, that is, one is Durvasa Rishi (Lord Shiva avatar) and another is Chandra (Lord Brahma – as part of Chandra Deva).
