Just before going to “First sloka (quote, hymn) of Bhagavad Gita with meaning | What is the meaning of Dharmakshetre Kurukshetre slokas?“, let us have a brief some brief information.
Left: Arjuna is completely agonized before the war of Kurukshetra in front of Bhagavan Sri Krishna. Right: Dhritarashtra (blind) and Sanjaya (with divine sight given by Bhagavan Veda Vyasa Ji).
What is the meaning of the word ‘Bhagavad Gita’ : Bhagavad = Bhagavan’s (God’s) + Gita (divine song). Bhagavad Gita was explained in the form a divine song.
Who said Bhagavad Gita : Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna | To whom Bhagavad Gita was said : To Arjuna – To be more accurate: The divine Bhagavan Gita is for everyone starting from Sri Brahma Deva to the last living being in the ‘Brahmanda’ (Universe).
Where was the Bhagavad Gita preached (upadesha) : At a divine place called Kurukshetra (Today’s Haryana). | When was this upadesha (preaching) was given : Approximately before 3137 B.C |
What can we learn by the study of Srimad Bhagavad-Gita : Accurate, fundamental knowledge about Bhagavan, the ultimate truth, creation, birth & death, the results of actions, the eternal soul, liberation and the purpose as well as the goal of human existence.
What is the first shloka of Bhagavad Gita (The first shloka is as given below):
dhr̥tarāṣṭra uvāca || dharma kṣētre kurukṣētrē samavētā yuyutsavah | māmakāh pāṇḍavāścaiva kimakurvatu san̄jaya ||
King Dhritarastra asks Sanjaya: dharma kṣētre = A place where only “Dharma” is followed; kurukṣētrē = A place called Kurukshetra (Kuru’s place); samavētā = Assembled;
yuyutsavah = desiring to fight; māmakāh = my party (my sons); pāndavah = the sons of Pandu; ca = and; eva = certainly; kim = what; akurvata = did they do; san̄jaya = O Sanjaya.
Just before the start of the divine war of Kurukshetra (Mahabharata war), Dhritarashtra asks Sanjaya: After having assembled at the holy Kurukshetra, what are my sons and Pandu’s sons are doing?
On the other side in the battle ground: Arjuna was completely confused whether to fight or not against his Pitamaha Bhishma (Great great grand father), Guru Drona, Brothers like Duryodhana and others, and also other elder Kauravas in Kurukshetra.
Arjuna decided not to fight and asked suggestion from Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna. Then, Lord Sri Krishna showed Arjuna ‘Vishnuroopa Darshanam / Vishwaroopa Darshanam’ (divine form of Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna).
And gave a divine explanation of Srimad Bhagavad Gita. Every moment a confused Arjuna (this means we all) opens the divine Bhagavad Gita to take the advice of Lord Sri Krishna.
And through the divine Bhagavad Gita, Lord Sri Krishna has been explaining and giving solutions to the various problems faced by the confused Arjunas (today’s people) for centuries and will continue to do the same forever…
