Just before going to “Dronacharya information, birth, Drona meaning, family, facts, full details“, let us have some brief information.

Dronacharya by birth is known as Drona. Later be came the acharya (teacher) and thus he got the name Dronacharya.

Dronacharya parents name : Maharishi Bharadvaja (father).

Dronacharya wife name : Kripi – She is the sister of Kripacharya and thus Dronacharya is the brother-in-law of Kripacharya.

Dronacharya children name : Ashwatthama (son), an avatar of Lord Shiva.

Dronacharya original avatar : He is an avatar of Brihaspati, the Guru of the Demigods.

Dronacharya ashram (hermitage) location : The only Dronacharya Temple which is dedicated to Dronacharya, that is, the guru of the Pandavas and Kauravas is located in Bhim Nagar Village, Gurugram, Haryana, India.

Dronacharya different names : Parshuramashishya (परशुरामशिष्य) as he was the disciple of Lord Parashurama and Bharadwajputra (भार्दवाजपुत्र) as he was the son of Maharishi Bharadwaja.

Maharishi Bharadwaja, the son of Brihaspati, begot Drona through Ghritachi.

He was called Drona because he was born in a type of vessel known as Drona. He was an avatar of Brihaspati himself, and Brahma’s amsha (ansh) (part) was also present in him.

Here the point to be noted is that, Maharishi Bharadwaja is the son of Devatas’ Guru Brihaspati. From him again, Brihaspati (Drona) is born as the son of Maharishi Bharadwaja.

Means – Brihaspati —> son —> Braradwaja —> son —> Brihaspati (Drona).

At about the same time Kripa was born. Maharishi Bharadvaja himself taught him the Vedas and the weapons.

At about this time Prishata, the king of Panchala, begot the son Drupada. He was the divine singer Hoohoo’s avatar. Avaha Maruta was also present in him as an amsha (ansh) (part).

Drupada studied the weapons from Bharadwaja along with Dronacharya.

Drupada once told Drona, “Let us enjoy kingdom together”.

Drona married Kripi. They lived near Hastinapur.

The King Virata was the same age as Dronacharya and Kripacharya.

King Virata was the divine singer Haha’s avatar, and Maruta Vivaha was present in him as amsha (ansh) (part).

Here the point to be noted is that, we as the Sanatana Dharma people, we were knowing the technique of begetting the children without the womb of a woman.

But kindly don’t think that Dronacharya was the first child to be born like this. We have several examples like this and others on how to get the children other than the normal way.

When other country’s people were even not knowing to count ‘one’ or hot to cook the food in the vessels, we as Sanatana Dharma people had mastered various technologies since unknown ages.

We should be highly proud of been born in this Great Bharata Varsha / Bharata Bhoomi / India.

Information about Dronacharya weapons is as given below:

Dronacharya received the Brahmastra from Lord Sri Parashurama, an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu.

Lord Sri Parashurama gave Dronacharya the knowledge of celestial weapons along with the invocation and withdrawal mantras.

Drona had various weapons like Brahmastra, Brahmashirastra, Narayanastra, Rudrastra, Agneyastra, Vajrastra etc.

Dronacharya also held the invincible sword of Lord Sri Brahma. Once Bhishma told the story of this sword to the Pandava prince Nakula, as he himself was a great swordsman.

In the past, this sword was a primordial weapon created by Devatas (Demigods) to destroy asuras, rakshasas, i.e. anyone who were against Sanatana Dharma.

The name of the sword is Asi, the personification and primal power behind all weapons ever created, but it had lesser strength when compared to the swords of Lord Sri Vishnu and Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi.

According to Bhishma, the constellation in which the sword is born is called Krittika, Agni is its Abhimani Devata (presiding deity), Rohini is its gotra, Rudra is its high preceptor, and whoever wields this weapon is sure of victory.

Nakula, the 4th Pandava received this sword from his Guru Dronacharya.

Dronacharya received Brahmashira from his Guru Agnivesha and he was also the student of Sage (Maharishi) Bharadwaja.

Drona teaching weaponry to Pandavas & Kauravas

Bhima (He is an avatar of Lord Sri Vayu Deva), Arjuna (He is an avatar of Lord Sri Indra Deva).

And similarly Sahadeva (He is an avatar of Ashwini Kumar) stayed with Lord Sri Krishna for some time and then returned to Hastinapura.

Vishoka, Lord Sri Krishna’s son through Trivakra (Same divine lady who was staying at Mathura with the humpback / Kubja), also came with them. He became Bhima’s charioteer.

The Pandavas received education in the spiritual lore from Lord (Sage) Sri Veda Vyasa (He is an avatar of Bhagavan Sri Vishnu).

Drona (He is an avatar of Devatas’ Guru Brihaspati) used to live a life without gathering any resources from anybody and with minimum need.

Therefore, Drona’s wife was not able to give milk to her son Ashwatthama (He is an avatar of Lord Shiva). She used to give him water mixed with flour instead.

Once, Ashwatthama drank milk at the Kaurava camp. He then started crying for milk at home also.

Therefore, Drona went to Lord Sri Parashurama to get a cow.

Lord Sri Parashurama thought that Drona should be used to kill the supporters of the Pandavas.

The supporters of Pandavas were deities. They had taken human form to assist Bhagavan’s (God’s) plan to destroy the demons born on the Kauravas’ side.

In turn someone who was quiet strong was required to fight these from Kauravas side.

Lord Sri Parshurama though of utilizing Drona and his son Ashwathama for this purpose. Therefore he told Drona that he had no cows but could teach him the scriptures and the weapons.

Drona studied under him for twelve years and then went to Drupada.

Drupada had studied with Drona under Drona’s father Maharishi Bharadvaja. He had promised Drona half of his kingdom earlier.

However, Drupada insulted him by asking how a poor Brahmana (Brahmin) could be a friend of a king.

Drona was upset and decided to teach him a lesson.

Drona went to Hastinapura with the intention of taking the Pandavas and Kauravas as his disciples.

When he went there, they were playing outside the city.

In the course of their play, their ball and a ring fell into the well. They were not able to lift them out.

Bhima offered to jump into the well and bring it.

In the meanwhile, Drona told them that they were Kshatriyas and that they should have been able to retrieve them by using their weapons.

The boys asked Drona himself to do so.

Drona brought the ball and the ring out of the well and asked the Pandavas and Kauravas to arrange for his livelihood, to which Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira) agreed.

They asked Drona who he was, and Drona told them to ask their grandfather Bhishma.

Bhishma came to the spot and asked Drona to teach the boys astra-vidya (weaponry).

Drona told the boys that whoever first agreed to satisfy his needs would become the best among the bow wielders.

Arjuna promised first.

Bhima did not come forward to make the promise since he did not want to fight against elders like Bhishma.

Moreover, he would not seek any favors from anyone other than Bhagavan (Krishna / Vishnu).

Arjuna and all the others learned astra-vidya (weaponry) from Drona.

Karna goes to Parashurama

Karna and Ekalavya also approached Drona for astra-vidya (weaponry).

However, Drona did not agree to teach them.

Karna then went to Lord Sri Parashurama. He told Lord Sri Parashurama that he was a Brahmana (Brahmin) and learned from him for four years.

Once when Lord Sri Parashurama was sleeping on Karna’s lap, an insect called Alarka pierced through his thigh.

Karna started bleeding. He did not want to disturb his Guru (Lord Sri Parashurama), so he endured the pain.

When Lord Sri Parashurama got up he said “no Brahmana (Brahmin) could withstand that much injury and that Karna should reveal his true self”.

Karna told him that he was a suta (chatioteer).

Lord Sri Parashurama cursed Karna that he could use his weapon when he was not in combat, but in combat, he would forget all that he had learned.

Ekalavya’s devotion to Drona

Ekalavya had great devotion towards Drona. He had prepared a mud image of Drona and used to worship him.

Ekalavya was very skilled in wielding the bow. Once, he showered arrows into the mouth of a dog without hurting it and stopped its barking.

When Drona was informed of this, he asked Ekalavya to cut his thumb and give it as Guru-dakshina (divine fee to the teacher).

As a result of this, he would not be able to wield the bow on par with Arjuna.
