Just before going to “Krishna and Rukmini marriage story (correct) (Srimad Bhagavatam) | Why did Lord Krishna marry Rukmini not Radha?“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

Rukmini place of birth : Lord Sri Krishna’s wife Rukmini was from Vidarbha. Similarly, Nala’s wife Damayanti was a princess of Vidarbha. Sage Agastya’s wife Lopamudra was also a princess of Vidarbha.

Indumati, grandmother of Lord Sri Rama and mother of King Dasharatha was also a princess of Vidarbha kingdom. Its capital was Kundinapuri, identified as Kaundinyapur in today’s eastern Maharashtra.

Rumkini birth name is Ruchiranana : Rukmini, the only daughter of King Bhishmaka, was very beautiful. Thus, she was known as Ruchiranana (रुचिरानना) (Rucirānanā), which means “one with a beautiful face stretched out like a divine and auspicious lotus flower.

King Bhishmaka (भीष्मक) (bhīṣmaka) was the Raja (King) of the Kingdom Kundina (Kundinapuri) (Vidarbha). Kundina or Kundinapuri was the capital of Vidarbha. The King Bhismaka was highly qualified. Bhishmaka had five sons and only one daughter.

King Bhishmaka first son was known as Rukmī (रुक्मी), the second son name was Rukmaratha (रुक्मरथा), the third son name is Rukmabāhu (रुक्मबाहु), the fourth son name is Rukmakeśa (रुक्मकेश) and the fifth son name is Rukmamālī (रुक्ममाली).

King Bhishmaka had one daughter known as Rukmiṇī (रुक्मिणी) (Sri Rukmini Devi). Rukmini Devi was highly beautiful and chaste and was meant to be married to Lord Sri Krishna.

Many saintly persons and sages like Devarishi (Sage) Narara Muni used to visit the palace of King Bhīṣmaka.

Thus and naturally Rukmini had a chance to talk with them including Devarishi (Sage) Narada and in this way she obtained information about Lord Sri Krishna from him.

Rukmini Devi was informed about the six opulences of Lord Sri Krishna, and simply by hearing about Him she desired to surrender herself to His lotus feet and become His consort.

As said above, King Bhishmaka had several children and among that one son named Rukmi and one daughter named Rukmini (Goddess Sri Rukmini Devi) were his prominent children.

(Lord Sri Krishna is an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu and Sri Rukmini Devi is an avatar of Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi.)

Both Lord Sri Krishna and Rukmini Devi were liking each other and they wanted to marry (Vivah).

But Rukmini Devi’s brother Rukmi didn’t like Lord Sri Krishna, and thus he was a wall between Lord Sri Krishna and Rukmini Devi. King Bhishmaka was also a friend of Raja (King) Jarasandha.

So, King Bhishmaka was also supporting both Rukmi and Jarasandha.

Rukmi decided to marry Rukmini Devi with Shishupala (Shishupal), and also all the arrangements for the marriage was also taking place.

[Shishupala (Shishupal) was an incarnation of the Lord Sri Vishnu (abode of Vaikuntha) gatekeeper named Jaya.]

[Shishupala (Shishupal) was same as Hiranyakashipu (Hiranyakashyap) during Satya Yuga and Ravana during the Treta Yuga.]

All the friends of Jarasandha went to Kundina to witness the marriage of Rukmini Devi and Shishupala (Shishupal).

Meanwhile, even many of the Yadavas also went to Kundina including Lord Sri Krishna and Balarama.

(Balarama was an avatar of Lord Sri Adishesha Naga, the bed of Lord Sri Vishnu. He is same as Lakshmana during the Treta Yuga.)

But one day before the marriage, Lord Sri Krishna made apaharanam (kidnap / abduction) of the Rukmini Devi as per the wish and will of Rukmini Devi.

Soon after, many Kings like Paundraka (Paundraka Vasudeva), Dantavakra, Viduratha, Shishupala (Shishupal), Jarasandha and Shalva all attacked the Yadavas, so that they can kill Lord Sri Krishna.

But, who can even touch Lord Sri Krishna in this unlimited Universes (Multiverse), without his (Lord Sri Krishna) permission.

On the other hand Balarama and other Yadavas defeated all these Kings with highest ease and in no time.

While Rukmi, made sankalpam (firm decision) that he won’t enter the Kundina, until he kills Lord Sri Krishna, an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu.

Rukmi, followed Lord Sri Krishna with many ashwas (horses), gajas (elephants), rathams (chariots), sainikas (soldiers), but he was not even able to touch Lord Sri Krishna.

Lord Sri Krishna easily defeated Rukmi and his soldiers and friends with highest serenity.

After Rukmi got defeated by Lord Sri Krishna, Rukmi was enraged with Lord Sri Krishna and thus Rukmi told to his sister Rukmini Devi, that she won’t be able to stay with Lord Sri Krishna for a long time.

Hearing these words Lord Sri Krishna was wanting to kill Rukmi, but Rukmini Devi requested Lord Sri Krishna that she is very fond of her brother and she don’t want to see his brother been killed.

So Lord Sri Krishna cut off half portion of Rukmi’s hairs (head) and half of the moustache of the Rukmi and sent Rukmi with humiliation.

Doing this type of humiliation means, almost killing somebody according to our Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism).

Thus, Rukmi was not able to go to Kundina, as he had taken sankalpam (firm decision) of not entering Kundina without killing Lord Sri Krishna.

For this Rukmi built a new city (place) known as Bhojataka and started to live in this place.

Lord Sri Krishna, then later brought Rukmini Devi to Dvaraka and got married with her and started to live happily.

They had a son called Pradyumnya and another nine sons and one daughter.

The names of the other ten sons of Rukmini Devi and Lord Sri Krishna are as given below:

PS: Here it should be noted that without the sankalpam (wish) of Lord Sri Krishna (Vishnu), nothing can happen.

How much ever we humans may try, but if Lord Sri Krishna doesn’t wishes, then all of our prayatnas (try) will be in vain.

But if we are doing something good, then we should try our best, the phalas (fruits) and pratiphalas (rewards) are left to Lord Sri Krishna.
