Just before moving towards to know about “What is Krishna Janmashtami (Gokulashtami) (Vedic) meaning | Lord Krishna birthday meaning and other information“, let us know few basic information.

In this post (article), let us know the meaning of the following:

What is Krishnarghya (Krishna Arghya)? | What happens if we are not observing Upavasam (fasting) on Sri Krishna Ashtami (Sri Krishna Janmashtami)? |

What is the meaning of Sri Krishnashtami? | What is the meaning of Sri Krishna Jayanti? | What is the meaning of Gokulashtami (Gokula Ashtami)? | What is the meaning of Janmashtami?

What is Sri Krishnarghya (Krishna Arghya) : If we give Arghya on Sri Krishnastami (Krishna Ashtami) day or on Krishna Jayanti day, we will get the punya (good deeds).

This punya (good deeds) will be equal to Samarpana of ‘samasta bhoomandalam’ as per Bhavishyottara purana (Bhavishya Purana). That is – We will get punya (good deeds) if we donate the whole of the earth. This is as per Bhavishyottara Purana (Bhavishya Purana).

Sri Krishnashtami vrata (vrat) (Sri Krishna Ashtami vrat) is also called as Haridina (Haridin) and this is similar to the divine Ekadashi (fasting). But the importance of performing one Sri Krishnashtami (Sri Krishna Ashtami) is equal to 20 crore Ekadashis.

We should not leave Sri Krishnashtami (Sri Krishna Ashtami), saying that – since we are doing Ekadashi fasting, if we don’t do Sri Krishna Ashtami fasting, then it’s okay“. No, we can’t do that.

We should do Ekadashi and similarly we must not leave Sri Krishnashtami (Sri Krishna Ashtami). If we do one Ekadashi, the fruits (phala) we get is less. But if we do one Sri Krishnashtami (Sri Krishna Ashtami), the the fruits is doing 20 crore Ekadashis.

This is a great and divine opportunity to all the real Vaishnavas (followers of Lord Vishnu / Krishna or any of his avatars) and should always perform both Ekadashi and Sri Krishnashtami (Sri Krishna Ashtami).

Why we are giving more importance to Sri Krishnashtami? or Why not to Ramanavami? or Why not to Buddha jayanthi?

Let’s know it’s inner and correct meaning as per Hindu Shastras as given below:

We should always remember that, there is no difference between any of the Lord Vishnu’s avatars. It may be Matsya avatar or Narasimha avatar or Varaha avatar or Kurma avatar or Vamana avatar or Parashurama avatar or Sri Rama avatar or Sri Krishna avatar or Buddha avatar or Kalki avatar or any other avatars.

All these avatars are of Lord Vishnu and there is no difference between Lord Vishnu or his all the avatars. We should never ever think there is difference in Lord Vishnu or his avatars or forms or roopas.

Since, the time frame Lord Krishna’s avatar is nearest to Kaliyuga, we should perform Sri Krishnashtami (Sri Krishna Ashtami). Only on this day that we have to do upavasam (fasting) and not on other Lord Vishnu Jayanti days.

Yes, you may ask, “But Lord Buddha is the nearest avatar to Kali Yuga, then why we are not performing on Buddha jayanti and why we are doing on Sri Krishnashtami (Sri Krishna Ashtami) day”?

Answer is like this : Yes, you are right! Buddha avatar is most nearer to us than Lord Krishna avatar. Even though Buddha avatar is nearest to us, it was only for a short period that Lord Vishnu took the avatar of Buddha.

And also we should know it’s inner meaning as given here: Lord Vishnu took the avatar of Buddha for “daitya mohaka roopa“. Here daitya mohaka roopa” means – Lord Vishnu took the avatar to show the incorrect path to the rakshasas (demons).

Lord Vishnu took the Buddha avatar, so that the rakshasas (demons) won’t get the Vedas to them. Lord Vishnu took the Buddha avatar, so that they won’t understand the real inner meaning of the Vedas.

This is similar to the today’s terrorism. If today’s terrorists get the nuclear power to them, then it will be disastrous to the humankind. Similarly, if Vedas goes in the hands of rakshasas (Demons), it will be disastrous to the mankind.

Whereas Lord Sri Krishna avatar is ‘gnana roopaka‘ (ज्ञान रूपक / ಜ್ಞಾನ ರೂಪಕ / jñāna rūpaka). That is, Lord Sri Krishna took the avatar to spread the correct knowledge to his real devotees.

And also, Lord Krishna took the avatar to completely annihilate the rakshasas (demons). For this reason, we have to do upavasam (fasting) on Sri Krishna Ashtami (Sri Krishna janmashtami / Sri Krishna Jayanti) only.

What happens if we are not observing Upavasam (fasting) on Sri Krishna Ashtami (Sri Krishna Janmashtami)?

As per Sri Bhavishya Purana (Bhavishyottara Purana), if we are not observing Sri Krishnashtami (Sri Krishna Ashtami) fasting, we will become ‘Brahma Rakshasa‘.

And that person will be born as Snake or tiger or similar kind of animal. We will get papam (sin) – (पाप / ಪಾಪ / pāpa) which will be similar to eating meat, if we not observing upavasam (fasting) as per smruti.

What is Ahneeka Karma (अह्नीक कर्म / ಅಹ್ನೀಕ ಕರ್ಮಾ / ahnīka karmā)?

Following are the rituals pertaining to the ‘ahneeka karma’:

Remaining 16,100 wives in their earlier lives were the children of Lord Agni Deva (Fire God). Lord Krishna had from each of his 16,108 consorts had 10 male and 1 female children. Lord Krishna in total had 16,108 * 10 = 1,61,080 male children and 16,108 * 1 = 16,108 female children.

Lord Krishna totally had three mothers as given below:

All the below named three mothers had done great and divine penance to get Lord Krishna as their children.

1. Sri Devaki Devi became the mother by giving birth to Lord Krishna. | 2. Sri Yashoda Devi became Lord Krishna mother by feeding her breast milk. | 3. Sri Rohini Devi became Lord Krishna mother by virtue of Lord Krishna being born in Rohini Nakshatra.

What is Sri Krishnashtmi (Sri Krishna Ashtami) and what is Krishna Jayanti?

As per Hindu shastras, the Lord Krishna Janmashtami is observed on the day when the ashtami tithi (8th day) occurs at midnight. If the ashtami tithi (8th day) and the Rohini nakshatra occur on the same day, then the observance is considered to be doubly sacred.

Otherwise the observance is held on the day on which the ashtami prevails at midnight. Shravana masam, Krishna paksha, Ashtami it is Sri Krishnashtami (Sri Krishna Ashtami). On that day if there is Rohini Nakshatra it is termed as Sri Krishna Jayanti.

It is the sacred day for all the real Vaishnavas. This is because, as it is on this day that Lord Krishna, who is not having the ‘Prakrita shareeram’ (प्राकृति शरीरम् / ಪ್ರಾಕೃತಿ ಶರೀರಂ / prākr̥ti śarīraṁ) was born as a child of mother Sri Devaki Devi.

Here Prakrita Shareeram means – Body depends on the nature. But Lord Vishnu (Krishna) is not at all dependent on the nature. Thus Lord Vishnu (Krishna) is not having a ‘Prakrita Shareeram’.

Lord Vishnu (Krishna) body is called as ‘Aprakrita Shareeram’, that is, he is not at all dependent on nature like others.

What is the Gokulashtami (Gokula Ashtami)? : Gokulashtami (Gokul Ashtami) is another name of Sri Krishnashtami (Krishna Ashtami).

What is the meaning of Janmashtami? : Janmashtami is also another name of Sri Krishnashtami (Krishna Ashtami).

As per Hindu Shastra, we have to do the pooja (worship) of the following gods on this day :

Sri Krishna, Sri Rukmini Devi, Sri Satyabhama Devi, Sri Jambavati Devi, Sri Mitravinda Devi, Sri Nagnajiti Devi, Sri Lakshana Devi, Sri Bhadra Devi, Sri Kalindi Devi, Balarama, Vasudeva (वसुदेव), Sri Devaki, Nandagopa, Sri Yashoda Devi and Sri Subhadra Devi.

Note : After this Kali Yuga completes and from the avatar of Lord Kalki (Lord Vishnu 10th avatar), at that time, Kalki Jayanti has to be performed. Reason is same, that is, at that time Lord Kalki’s avatar will be the nearest and thus Kalki Jayanti has to be celebrated at that time.
