Just before going to “Lord Rama and Lord Krishna difference? | Who was more handsome Rama or Krishna | Lord Rama vs Lord Krishna who is more powerful | Why is Krishna more popular than Rama | Ram and Krishna are same?“, let us have a brief some brief information.

Mahabharata (Krishna) and Ramayana (Rama) are the two greatest epics of the Hinduism. In Ramayana, Bhagavan Lord Sri Rama’s greatness has been explained, whereas in Mahabharata, Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna’s greatness has been explained.

In this post (article) you will know the difference in the different pastimes of both Lord Sri Rama and Lord Sri Krishna as per the Hindu Scriptures like Ramayana, Mahabharata, Srimad Bhagavatam, etc.

We should always remember that there is no difference between Lord Sri Vishnu or any of his avatars starting from Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Kalki etc. But, we can find difference in their pastimes.

The way Lord Sri Matsya shows his pastimes, same pastimes are not present in Lord Parashurama avatar, same pastimes can’t be found in any other avatars too. Lord Sri Vishnu takes avatar on this earth as per his own wish and will and no one can order him. He is his own BOSS 😎

List of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna difference (pastimes) is as given below:

Killing demons – Lord Sri Rama himself went to the asuras (demons) and other ill-minded people and killed all of them. E.g., Lord Sri Rama went to Vali’s place and killed him, went to Ravana’s place and killed him etc.

The asuras (demons) themselves came near Lord Sri Krishna and got killed. E.g., Putana, Shakatasura, Trinavarta, etc. etc. etc. all came to Lord Sri Krishna and got killed.

Even during the killing of Kamsa, Lord Sri Krishna didn’t went to Mathura, but instead he was asked by Kamsa to come there. In Shishupala, Dantavakra’s case also they themselves came to attack him, but instead got killed.

Serious or Mischievous : All though Lord Sri Rama always had the calm mind, in this avatar Lord Sri Rama was a little serious kind of person. Here serious doesn’t mean he was a tough kind of person, but he was talking less. He was less social.

In the Lord Sri Krishna avatar, he was more friendly, mischievous and playful with others including wives, relatives, his subjects etc. Lord Sri Krishna showed in his avatar that he is more social personality. In both the avatars (Rama and Krishna) he was keeping a beautiful smile on his face.

Marriage : Lord Sri Rama married only once, that is, to Goddess Sri Sita Devi and she is an avatar of Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi. Sita Devi has other names like Janaki, Vaidehi, Maithili, Bhumija, etc.

Whereas, Lord Sri Krishna married 16,108 divine women. In that Goddess Sri Rukmini Devi and Goddess Sri Satyabhama Devi are both avatars of Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi.

And also we should know that the other 16,106 divine women were also having the sannidhana (divine presence) of Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi. For example Jambavati Devi is an avatar of Tulasi Devi and she had the sannidhana of Goddess Lakshmi.

Without the sannidhana (divine presence) of Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi, Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna (Vishnu) will never ever marry anyone. Lord Sri Vishnu (Krishna) is the ‘vairagya murthy’. He can easily live without anything or anyone, but others can’t live without Lord Sri Vishnu.

To know the real secret of this story, click this link post: How Krishna killed Narakasur and married 16,100 women

Brother relationship : During Lord Sri Rama Avatar, Lord Sri Adishesha Naga (Bed of Lord Sri Vishnu), that is, Lakshmana never went against the wishes of Lord Sri Rama.

But, during Lord Sri Krishna Avatar, Lord Sri Adishesha Naga, that is, Balarama went against the wishes of Lord Sri Krishna in few instances.

For example, Balarama teaches ‘Gada Yuddha’ (mace fighting) to Duryodhana. Thus, Balarama loses his ‘punya karma’ (part of good Karmas) which he had accomplished during the Lakshmana avatar.

Vayu Avatar : In Lord Sri Rama avatar Lord Sri Vayu Deva took the avatar of Lord Sri Hanuman and served Bhagavan Lord Sri Rama in the Treta Yuga. Lord Sri Hanuman single handedly and sometimes without any weapon killed millions of Ravana’s soldiers.

In Lord Sri Krishna avatar Lord Sri Vayu Deva took the avatar of Bhima and served Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna. Bhima killed maximum number of Kaurava soldiers single handedly. Sometimes just his roar was killing many animals and soldiers in Mahabharata war.

Wedding : In the avatar, Lord Sri Rama was called as ‘Eka Patni Vratastha’ (to marry only one divine woman in the whole life). He never married any other woman and more importantly he never wished to wed any other woman.

In the avatar of Lord Sri Krishna, he married 16,108 divine women. All these divine women (other than Sri Rukmini Devi and Sri Satyabhama Devi) in their earlier lives had done difficult tapasya (austerity) to Lord Sri Vishnu to get married.

Thus Bhagavan Lord Sri Vishnu had promised all of those women that in the Lord Sri Krishna avatar he will definitely fulfill the wishes of all these divine women. There is nothing that Bhagavan Lord Sri Vishnu will get from these divine women.

But instead, these divine women got all the divine and material things from Lord Vishnu. This is not easy for ordinary people to understand. This needs lots of ‘jnana’ (divine knowledge) and ‘bhakti’ (divine devotion).

Cruel relatives : In the avatar of Lord Sri Rama, there was no one who was a ‘kruri’ (cruel), demon etc. in his own family or relatives. (Kaikeyi can’t be called as cruel since it was Rama’s wish to go to forest, otherwise he could had not killed Ravana.)

In the Lord Sri Krishna avatar, there were many who were ‘kruri’ (cruel), demons etc. in his own family and relatives. E.g., Kamsa, Duryodhana, Shishupala, Dantavakra, Shrigala Vasudeva, Paundraka Vasudeva, etc.

Children : In Lord Sri Rama avatar, he had only two children, that is, Kusha (elder) and Lava. Lava was an avatar of Lord Sri Indra (King of all the Demigods) and Kusha was an avatar of Lord Sri Agni (Fire God).

In Lord Sri Krishna avatar, he had 10 male children and 1 female child from each of his divine consorts starting from Goddess Sri Rukmini Devi, Goddess Sri Satyabhama Devi, Sri Jambavati Devi, etc.

Birth (Avatar) : Lord Sri Rama was born (took avatar) after the ‘putra kameshti yagna’ by King Dasharatha and his wives, that is, Kausalya Devi, Sumitra Devi and Kaikeyi Devi. Lord Sri Rama’s mother name is Kausalya Devi.

Lord Sri Krishna was born (took avatar) as the earlier lives’ ‘punya karma’ (divine Karmas as per the earlier lives) from Devaki Devi and Vasudeva. Devaki Devi is an avatar of Aditi Devi and Vasudeva is an avatar of Maharishi Kashyapa.

Becoming King : Lord Sri Rama after the war of Lanka, became the King of Ayodhya (Also of the whole world). He ruled the whole world for more than 11,000 years. This period was known as ‘Ramarajya’. During this period, there was no problems at all in the whole world.

Lord Sri Krishna was never the King of any place even though he could had become the King of Mathura, Hastinapur, Dwarka etc. But still, everyone were listening to the words of Lord Sri Krishna starting from Balarama, Ugrasena, Five Pandavas, Dhritarashtra etc.

Going to exile : During the Lord Sri Rama avatar, Lord Sri Rama went to forest exile for 14 years as per the wishes of his step-mother Kaikeyi. But, we need to remember that during this period of forest exile Lord Sri Rama, Goddess Sita Devi and Lakshmana never faced any problems at all.

Only the foolish people think that Lord Sri Rama, Goddess Sita and Lakshmana faced terrible problems. Don’t forget that they are avatars of Lord Sri Vishnu, Goddess Sri Lakshmi Devi and Lord Sri Adishesha Naga, and not mere humans like you and me.

Lord Sri Krishna never went to any forest exile, but in-fact Lord Sri Krishna helped the Five Pandavas who went to forest exile for 13 years, that is, 12 years as the forest exile (Vanavas) and 1 year as the incognito exile (Agyatvas).

Avatar period : Lord Sri Rama was physically present for over 11,000 years on this earth. During the Treta Yuga period the average lifespan of the humans was 10,000+ years. Even his father King Dasharatha lived for over 9,000+ years.

Similarly, Lord Sri Krishna was also physically present on this earth for 106.6 years. No one can order Lord Sri Vishnu or any of his avatars to perform anything. But, Lord Sri Vishnu and his avatars can do anything and everything as per his own wish and will.

Respect for parents : In both the avatars of Lord Sri Rama and Lord Sri Krishna, they gave full respect to their parents and their words. In the Lord Sri Rama avatar his step-mother Kaikeyi Devi wished that he should go to forest exile for 14 years and he completely admired that.

In Lord Sri Krishna avatar, though he never went to any exile, but he always respected his parents words. His mother Devaki Devi wished to see her other 6 children. Lord Sri Krishna went to Yama Loka and brought all the dead 6 children (Krishna’s elder brothers) to his mother.

Parents avatars : Lord Sri Rama’s parents, that is, King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya were the avatars of Swayambhu Manu and Shatarupa Devi. Lord Sri Krishna’s parents, that is, Devaki Devi and Vasudeva were the avatars of Aditi Devi and Maharishi Kashyapa.

Death (Immortal) : We should always remember that Lord Sri Vishnu or any of his avatars has no birth or death. He is unborn and immortal. Lord Sri Rama ends his avatar period by entering the Sarayu river. Sarayu river is a stream of the Mansarovar (Manasa-Sarovara).

Similarly, Lord Sri Krishna acts as if an arrow pierced his lotus foot (which was shot by a hunter called Jara). Here Lord Sri Krishna never dies. He creates a portrait (replica) of his own and shows that he is dead. But, Lord Sri Krishna never-ever dies.

Childhood : Lord Sri Rama spends his enter childhood in Ayodhya and surrounding places, that is, mostly in the ‘nagara / nagar’ (city). Lord Sri Krishna spends his childhood in different places like Gokula (village), Vrindavana (Vrindavan) (village), Mathura (city) etc.

Childhood living style and friends : Lord Sri Rama spends his entire childhood in the royal palace of Ayodhya (Kosala), without much of friends. One of the childhood friend of Lord Sri Rama is Guha, a fisherman.

Lord Sri Krishna spends his childhood in the villages like Gukula and Vrindavana (Vrindavan) with many friends like Sridhama, Sudama, Vasudama, Kinkini, Bhadrasena, Amshu, Stoka-Krishna, Pundarika, Vitankaksa, Kalavinka, and Priyankara. They were almost the same age as that of Krishna and are very dear to Him.

Close friendship : In Lord Sri Rama avatar, he gave more importance to Lord Sri Hanuman. Lord Sri Rama took the help of Lord Sri Hanuman and other Vanaras (Monkeys) only to showcase their greatness. Other great Vanaras who helped Lord Sri Rama are Sugriva, Angada, Nala, Neela etc.

In Lord Sri Krishna avatar, he gave more importance to Arjuna. Lord Sri Krishna himself became the charioteer for Arjuna in the battle of Kurukshetra (Mahabharata). Other close people to Lord Sri Krishna are Bhima, Yudhishthira, Nakula, Sahadeva etc.

Main weapons : Although Lord Sri Vishnu has unlimited weapons, in Lord Sri Rama avatar he showcases the bow, arrow and sword. His bow name is Sharanga (Also called Kodanda), sword name is Nandaka. He had multiple and highly powerful arrows like Vaishnavastra, Brahmastra, etc.

In Lord Sri Krishna avatar he showcases almost all the weapons of Lord Sri Vishnu. The different weapons used by Lord Sri Krishna are Sudarshana Chakra (disc), Nandaka Sword, Kaumudaki Gada (Mace), and unlimited number of arrows like Vaishnavastra, Brahmastra, Vayuastra, Mohiniastra, Garudastra, etc.

Rules and regulations (Dharma) : Lord Sri Rama always showed that the Dharma written in Hindu Texts has to be followed by each and everyone, and he himself always followed all the Dharma’s rules and regulations.

Lord Sri Rama never-ever deviated against the Dharma. Lord Sri Krishna too followed Dharma but with a twist. As the Vedas says Lord Sri Vishnu himself is Dharma.

Whatever Lord Sri Vishnu does and wishes will automatically becomes Dharma (rules and regulations). Lord Krishna instructed Bhima to kill Duryodhana by hitting his thighs.

Although hitting the thighs in the gada yuddha (mace battle) is against the rules, but since Duryodhana had made the heinous mistake of telling his sister-in-law Draupadi to “come and sit on my thigh” turned curse to Duryodhana. Dharma says ‘Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah’.

Most popularity in Kali Yuga : Lord Sri Rama was most popular during the Treta Yuga and also until the end of Dvapara Yuga. That time it was Lord Sri Rama who was the latest avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu. Thus, Lord Sri Rama was more popular during that period.

In Kali Yuga Lord Sri Krishna is more popular since Lord Sri Vishnu took the avatar of Lord Sri Krishna at the end of Dvapara Yuga. In the whole of the Kali Yuga Lord Sri Krishna will be most popular than any other avatars of Lord Sri Vishnu.

Similarly, at the end of Kali Yuga Lord Sri Vishnu takes the avatar of Lord Sri Kalki. From that time, Lord Sri Vishnu’s Lord Sri Kalki avatar will be most popular than Lord Sri Rama and Lord Sri Krishna’s avatars. This is happening according to the will and wish of Lord Sri Vishnu himself.

Peace messenger : During Ramayana period (Treta Yuga), Lord Sri Rama sent Hanuman and Angada as the ‘peace ambassadors’ to Lanka before the Ramayana war. Both Hanuman and Angada very politely asked Ravana to return Sita Devi, which Ravana flatly refused to do so.

During Mahabharata period (Dvapara Yuga), Lord Sri Krishna himself went to Kauravas (Hastinapur) as the ‘peace messenger’. Lord Sri Krishna asked Duryodhan to give at least 5 small villages to 5 Pandavas, which was abruptly rejected by Duryodhana.

Original avatars : Lord Sri Rama is an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu’s another form called Lord Sri Vasudeva (वासुदेव). It is this form of Lord Sri Vishnu who give the Moksha (Final Liberation) to his devotees.

After the Moksha people will go to Vaikuntha or Anantasana or Shwetadvipa. Lord Sri Krishna is an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu’s ‘Krishna Kesha’ (Black hair), that is, one hair of Lord Sri Vishnu’s black hair.

But, we should always remember that there is no difference between Lord Sri Vishnu and his any of the body parts. Lord Sri Vishnu can do anything from any part of his body part, e.g., He can give birth from any part of his body.

Other avatars presence : During Lord Sri Rama avatar, Lord Sri Parashurama (Another avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu) was also present. Lord Sri Parashurama came to earth to annihilate all the ill-minded Kshatriyas, that is, in simple words to wipe out all the bad Kshatriyas.

Lord Sri Rama came to earth to destroy all the asuras (demons), especially the demon King Ravana. Also, Lord Sri Rama established ‘Ramarajya’ on the earth. Whereas during Lord Sri Krishna avatar, Lord Sri Parashurama and Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa were also present at the same time.

Texts composers : Lord Sri Vishnu’s another form of Lord Sri Hayagriva composed the ‘Moola (Original) Ramayana’. This was preached to Lord Sri Brahma by Lord Sri Hayagriya. Lord Sri Brahma preached the same to Devarishi Narada.

Devarishi Narada preached the same Moola Ramayana to Rishi Valmiki. Later, as per the instructions of Lord Sri Brahma and preaching’s of Maharishi Narada, Rishi Valmiki composed ‘Valmiki Ramayana’. Moola Ramayana has 100 Crore slokas, while Valmiki Ramayana has 24,000 slokas.

Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa who is also an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu composed the present available ‘Mahabharata’ which has 1,00,000 slokas. Mahabharata was composed before the real Mahabharata happened, that is, Lord Sri Vedavyasa composed it around 600 years before itself.

Note : We should always remember that, there is no difference between the avatars of Bhagavan Lord Sri Rama and Bhagavan Lord Sri Krishna. They both are one and the same and both are the avatars of Lord Sri Vishnu himself.

In Lord Sri Rama avatar, he shows us the path of Dharma in one way. Whereas the Lord Sri Krishna is also an avatar Vishnu, he shows us the path of Dharma in another way.

Lord Sri Rama and / or Lord Sri Krishna can never ever be two different entities. What they teach will automatically becomes Dharma.
