Children – Dattatreya (Lord Vishnu avatar), Chandra (Lord Brahma born in a Devata called Chandra, as Lord Brahma has no birth on earth) and Durvasa (Lord Shiva avatar).

Jamadagni Maharishi (जमदग्नि महर्षि) (jamadagni maharṣi) : Parents – Rishi Ruchika (Descendant of Sage Bhrigu, son of Lord Sri Brahma),

Wife – Renuka Devi, Children – Vasu, Vishwa Vasu, Brihudyanu, Brutwakanwa and Parashurama (Lord Vishnu avatar).

Gautama Maharishi (गौतम महर्षि) (gautama maharṣi) : Parents – Unknown, Wife – Ahalya Devi,

Children – Shatananda [He was the Guru of Seeradhwaja (Janaka Maharaja – Father of Goddess Sri Sita Devi) and others.

Gautama Maharishi is one of the Saptarishis (One among the Seven Great Sages).

Bharadvaja Maharishi (भारद्वाज महर्षि) (bhāradvāja maharṣi) : Parents – Brihaspati (father), Siblings – Kacha, Kesari,

Wife – Susheela Devi, Children – Garga, Drona (He was an avatar of his own father Brihaspati) and Ilavida.

Kashyapa Maharishi (कश्यप महर्षि) (kaśyapa maharṣi) : Parents – Marichi (father) and Kalā (mother),

Wives (13) – Aditi, Diti, Kadru, Danu, Arishta, Surasa, Surabhi, Vinata, Tamra, Krodhavasha, Ira, Kadru, Vishwa and Muni.

Kashyapa Maharishi children names

Vashishtha Maharishi (वशिष्ठ महर्षि) (vaśiṣṭha maharṣi) : Parents – Lord Sri Brahma, Wife – Arundhati,

Children – Shakti, Citraketu, Surocis, Virajas, Mitra, Ulbana, Vasubhrdyana and Dyumat (from Arundhati), Asmaka (Niyoga child for Kalmashapada).

Vashishtha Maharishi is the Guru of all the Suryavansh (Suryavamsha) (Solar Dynasty) (Lord Sri Rama lineage) Kings starting from Ikshvaku.

Agastya Maharishi (अगस्त्य महर्षि) (agastya maharṣi) : Parents – Pulastya (father) and Havirbhoo (mother), Wife – Lopamudra, Children – Dridhasyu.

Bhrigu Maharishi (बृगु महर्षि) (bhr̥gu maharṣi) : Parents – Brahma (father), Wives – Khyati, Kavyamata and Puloma,

Children – Dhata, Vidhata, Bhargavi (from Khyati), Shukracharya (from Kavyamata), Chyavana (from Puloma).

Bhrigu Maharishi is the one who kicks Lord Vishnu on his ‘vakshasthala’ (Chest part of Lord Sri Vishnu).

For this reason we got Lord Sri Srinivasa (Venkatesha) (Balaji) temple in Tirupati and Sri Mahalakshmi temple at Kolhapur.

Durvasa Muni (दुर्वास मुनि) (dūrvāsa muni) : Parents – Atri (father) and Anasuya (mother),

Siblings – Dattatreya (Brother – An avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu), Chandra (Brother – Lord Brahma born in a Devata called Chandra, as Lord Brahma has no birth on earth), Wife – Kandali.

Durvasa Muni plays a vital role in King Ambarisha’s story of Suryavansh (Suryavamsha) (Solar Dynasty) lineage.

Kapila Maharishi (कपिल महर्षि) (kapila maharṣi) : Parents – Devahuti (mother) and Kardama (father),

Siblings (Sisters) – Kala, Anusuya, Sraddha, Havirbhu, Gati, Kriya, Khyati, Arundhati and Shanti,

Brother-in-laws – Marici, Atri, Angiras, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Bhrigu, Vashistha, and Atharvan.

Maharishi (Lord) Sri Kapila Maharishi  is an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu.

Rishyashringa Maharishi (ऋश्य श्रुंगमहर्षि) (r̥ṣyaśr̥ṅga maharṣi) : He is also known as – Shringi Rishi, Ekashringa (He had one horn on his head and thus he is called by this name).

Shringi = He had Deer’s one horn and thus he is known as Shringi.

Ekashringa = Eka + Shringa = One + Horn = Born with one horn (Deer) and thus he is called as Ekashringa.

Parents – Vibhandaka (father), Wife – Shanta (She is the daughter of Dasharatha Maharaja).

Rishyashringa Maharishi plays an important role in the ‘Putra Kameshti‘ yagna performed by Dasharatha Maharaja.

In this divine ‘Putra Kameshti’ yagna, even the great Maharishi Vashishtha was also present.

Parashara Maharishi (पराशर महर्षि) (parāśara maharṣi) : Parents – Shakti Maharishi (father) and Adrushyanti (mother),

Wife – Satyavati, Children – Vyasa (Vedavyasa) (An avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu) (From Satyavati).

Vedavyasa Maharishi (वेदव्यास महर्षि) (vēdavyāsa maharṣi) : He is an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu.

Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa Ji childhood name is Krishna Dvaipayana.

Krishna Dvaipayana = Krishna + Dvaipayana = Dark colored + Born on an island.

Parents – Parashara (Father) and Satyavati (Mother), Wife – Vatikā, Children (from Vatikā) – Shukacharya (son) (He is an avatar of Lord Shiva),

Children through Niyoga – Dhritarashtra (from Ambika), Pandu (from Ambalika), Vidura (from Parishrami).

Markandeya Maharishi (मार्कण्डेय महर्षि) (mārkaṇḍēya maharṣi) : Parents – Sage Mrikanda (father) and Marudmati (mother), Born in the clan of : Bhrigu Maharishi

Markandeya Maharishi is one among the Chiranjivi (Will live very long on this earth).

Chiranjivi names : Lord (Sage) Vedavyasa Ji, Hanuman, Lord Parashurama, Vibhishana, Ashwatthama, Mahabali (Bali Chakravarti), Kripacharya, Markandeya Maharishi, etc.

Lord Shiva is called as ‘Mrityunjaya‘, as he saved Markandeya from Lord Yama. Mrityu is another name of Lord Yama.

Since Lord Shiva fights against Lord Yama and wins the battle, Shiva is called as ‘Mrityunjaya‘ [(Mrityu + Jaya = Winning over Mrityu (Yama)].

Dadhichi Maharishi (दधीचि महर्षि) (dadhīci maharṣi) : Parents – Atharvan (father) and Chiti (Mother), Wife – Suvarchas, Children (Son) – Pippalada.

Lord Sri Indra Deva gets his ‘Vajrayudha‘ from this great Maharishi Dadhichi’s backbone (Spinal cord).

Using this ‘Vajrayudha‘, Lord Sri Indra Deva against Rakshasas (Demons).

Kanva Maharishi (कण्व महर्षि) (kaṇva maharṣi) : Children (Son) – Medhatithi.

Yagnavalkya Maharishi (याज्ञवल्क्य महर्षि) (yājñavalkya maharṣi) : Wives : Maitreyi, Katyayani

Chyavana Maharishi (च्यवन महर्षि) (cyavana maharṣi) : Parents – Bhrigu (father) and Puloma (mother),

Wife – Sukanya, Children – Aurava, Apnavana, Dadhicha, Pramati, Sumana and Harita.

Satyakama Jabala Maharishi (सत्यकाम जाबाल) (satyakāma jābāla maharṣi) : He is also known as Satyakama Jabali Maharishi.

Parents – Jabala (Mother), Guru (Teacher) – Haridrumata Gautama .

Kacha Maharishi (कच महर्षि) (kaca maharṣi) : Parents – Brihaspati (father) and Tara (mother), Siblings – Bharadvaja, Kesari

Guru (Teacher) – Shukracharya. Kacha Maharishi had learned Mrita Sanjivini Vidya (A hymn for bringing back the dead to back to life) from his Guru Shukracharya.

Kacha Maharishi disregards Devayani‘s (Shukracharya daughter) proposal of marriage, as he believed that Guru’s daughter is like a sister as per Dharma.

Pulastya Maharishi (पुलस्त्य महर्षि) (pulastya maharṣi) : Parents – Lord Sri Brahma (A manasa putra, born from the mind of Lord Sri Brahma),

Wife – Havirbhu (Sage Kardama’s daughter), Children – Maharishi Agastya, Rishi Vishrava

Vishwamitra Maharishi (विश्वामित्र महर्षि) (viśvāmitra maharṣi) : His childhood name is called as ‘Kaushika‘.

Parents – Gadhi (गाधी / gādhi) (Father), Wife – Menaka (An Apsara), Children – Madhuchhanda, Ashtaka, Shunahshepa, Sushruta and Shakuntala.

This great Vishwamitra Maharishi is the one who re-initiated the great ‘Gayatri Mantra‘ to the world.

The name “Kaushika” literally means “descended from Kusha“. In Sanskrit Kusha means grass.

Vishwamitra precisely means, ‘friend of the universe‘.

Nachiketa Maharishi (नचिकेत महर्षि) (nacikēta maharṣi) : Parents – Vajashravas (वाजश्रवस् / vājaśravas).

Name Nachiketa (नचिकेत) meaning – न + चि + केतृ (केतु) (Na + Chi + Ketru / Keta). Here न (na) means ‘no’ / negation,

चि (chi) means चैतन्य, that is, unending divine energy and केत (केतस् / केतन् / केतु) means continuous revolving action.

Therefore, Nachiketa literally means “The one who does not let his energy be wasted in an unwanted cycle or loop“.

Nachiketa as a very young boy goes to Yama Loka with material body itself and learns ‘Atma Vidya‘ from Lord Sri Yama Deva.

Kaushika Maharishi (कौशिक महर्षि) (kauśika maharṣi) : Kaushika is an another name of Vishwamitra Maharishi.

The name “Kaushika” literally means “descended from Kusha“. In Sanskrit Kusha means grass.

Jaratkaru Maharishi (जरत्कारु महर्षि) (jaratkāru maharṣi) : Lineage : Jaratkaru was born in the lineage of the Yayavara Brahmanas.

Wife – Manasa (A serpent Goddess and sister of Vasuki Serpent), Children – Astika.

Angirasa Maharishi (अंगीरस महर्षि) (aṅgīrasa maharṣi) : Parents – Lord Sri Brahma Deva (Father),

Wife – Surūpa, Children – Utathya, Brihaspati and other children.

Utathya Maharishi (उतथ्य महर्षि) (Utathya) : Parents – Angirasa Maharishi (Father), 

Wife – Mamata, Children – Bharadwaj and Deerghatamasa

Dirghatamasa Maharishi (दीर्घतमस महर्षि) (dīrghatamasa maharṣi) : Parents – Utathya (Father) and Mamata (Mother),

Uncle – Brihaspati, Grandfather – Angirasa Maharishi, Wife – Pradeshwari, Sudeshna,

Children – Gautama and others (From Pradeshwari), Kakshivat and eleven sons (From a Shudra woman) and Anga, Vanga, Kalinga, Pundra, Cumbha (From Sudeshna).

Sandipani Rishi (सांदीपनि ऋषि) (sāndīpani r̥ṣi) : He was the Guru of Lord Krishna, Balarama, Sudama, etc.

Sandipani son was rescued by Lord Krishna from the clutches of a demon called as ‘Shankhasura‘ (शंखासुर / śaṅkhāsura).

Garga Rishi (गर्ग ऋषि) (garga r̥ṣi) : Parents – Bhardvaja (Father) and Susheela (Mother),

Half Brother – Dronacharya (Guru of Pandavas and Kauravas), Half Sister – Devavarnini (Lord Kubera’s mother).

Garga Rishi was the ancestral teacher of Yadavas (Lord Krishna) and Gopas. Also he is the ‘Kula-Guru‘ (Family Guru) of Lord Krishna family.

It was Garga Rishi who made the ‘nama karna‘ (naming ceremony) of both Krishna and Rama (Balarama) names.

Maitreya Maharishi (मैत्रेय r̥ṣi) (maitrēya r̥ṣi) : Parents – Kauṣārava or Tuṣārava (Father) and Mitrā (Mother).

Note : On hearing that the Pandavas were told to go to forest exile, Maitraya Rishi advises Dhritarashtra to make peace with Pandavas.

Whereas, Duryodhana patted his own thighs out of arrogance and this enraged the Maitreya Rishi who cursed him to die due to broken thighs.

Shandilya Maharishi (शांडिल्य महर्षि) (śāṇḍilya) : He is also called as ‘Udara Śāṇḍilya‘. Parents – Devala (Father),

Grandfather – Kashyapa Maharishi, Gurus (Teachers) – Atidhanvān Śaunaka, Kaushika, Gautama Maharishi, Kaishorya Kaapya, Vatsya Vaijavap, and Kushri.

Disciples (Students) – Kaundinya, Agnivesha, Vatsya Vamakakshayan, Vaishthapureya, and Bharadwaja.

Shunahashepa Maharishi (शुनःशेप महर्षि) (ಶುನಃಶೇಪ ಮಹರ್ಷಿ) : He was an adopted son of the great Vishwamitra Maharishi.

Jaimini Rishi (जैमिनी ऋषि) (jaiminī r̥ṣi) : He is a disciple of Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa Ji.

Sharabhanga Rishi (शरभंग ऋषि) (śarabhaṅga r̥ṣi) : He is a Treta Yuga Rishi. During Lord Rama’s forest exile, Lord Rama visited Sharabhanga Rishi.

Kautsya Rishi (कौत्स ऋषि) (kautsya r̥ṣi) : He name is also pronounced as Kautsa Rishi. Parents – Devadatta (Father).

Shuka Muni (शुक मुनि) (śuka muni) : He is also called as Shukacharya. He is an avatar of Lord Shiva.

Parents – Lord (Sage) Sri Veda Vyasa (father) and Vatikā (or Pinjalā) (mother),

Wife – Pivari, Children (Sons) – Krishnagaura, Shambhu, etc. (Sons), Daughters – Kritti.

Shuka Muni (Shukacharya) is the one who preached the divine ‘Srimad Bhagavatam‘ to King Parikshita (Parishit).

Shvetaketu Rishi (श्वेतकेतु महर्षि) (śvētakētu r̥ṣi) : Parents – Uddalaka (or Aruni) (Father).

Mandavya Rishi (माण्डव्य ऋषि) (māṇḍavya r̥ṣi) : He belongs to ‘Bhargava‘ gotra (lineage).

Mandavya is also called as ‘Ani-Mandavya‘ (Mandavya with a stake within), as he was kept on ‘Sooli‘ (stake).

Mandakarni (माण्डकर्णि ऋषि) (māṇḍakarṇi r̥ṣi) : He comes in the Ramayana and he did tapas (penance) for 10k years.
