Just before going to “Leadership qualities in Hinduism (Narada advice to Yudhishthira) | How does Hinduism view leadership? | What type of leadership is Hinduism? | What were Narada’s questions to Yudhisthira?“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

Yudhishthira parents names are : King Pandu (father) and Kunti (Pritha) (Mother). | Yudhishthira weapon name is : Spear (शूलम्). | Yudhishthira spouse (wives) names are : Draupadi and Devika. |

Yudhishthira brothers names are : Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva. | Yudhishthira children names are : Prativindhya (son) and Suthanu (daughter) by Draupadi, and Yaudheya by Devika. |

Narada parents names are : Lord Sri Brahma Deva (father). Narada Maharshi was born as the Manasa Putra (born from mind). | Narada symbols : He always carries a veena called Mahati with him. He is best among all the Rishis and Maharishis. |

Now, let’s know about “Leadership qualities in Hinduism (Narada advice to Yudhishthira)” | “How does Hinduism view leadership?” | “What type of leadership is Hinduism?” as given below:

Narada Maharshi is highly regarded as a great bhakta (devotee) of Lord Sri Vishnu / Lord Sri Rama / Lord Sri Krishna / Lord Sri Narayana / Lord Sri Hari.

[(Meaning of the name Narada : Naram is Gnyaanam (knownledge). He is the one who gives Gnyanam / knowledge to all.]

For many great Bhaktas (devotees), Yogis, Maharshis Narada Maharshi (Devarshi) is the Guru. E.g., Dhruva, Prahlada, Rishi Valmiki (the composer of Valmiki Ramaya), etc.

It is well known that with Devarshi Narada’s blessings one can easily get the divine bhakti (devotion) about Lord Sri Vishnu or any of this different avatar(s).

Maharshi Narda was the Guru of ‘Adi Kavi Valmiki’, Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa (remember that Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa is svayam (directly) an avatar of Lord Sri Vishnu, just like Lord like Lord Sri Krishna.]

[Just like Maharshi Vashishtha was Guru to Lord Sri Rama, Maharshi Sandipani was Guru of Lord Sri Krishna, similarly Narada Maharshi was Guru of Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa].

Also, Devarshi Narada was Guru many divine people like Dhruva, Prahlada, Haryashwas & Shabalashwas, children of Dakshaprajapati, Chitraketu, etc. (the list goes on…)

Narada Maharshi did ‘divya-upadeshams’ (Divine advice / preaching) to Goddess Sri Savitri Devi, Yudhishthira (Dharmaraja), Rishi Durvasa (He is an avatar of Lord Shiva), Sanata-kumaras etc.

It is because of Narada Maharshi we today know about ‘Satyanarayana Vratam’, which is the easiest way to attain both Iham (material) and Param (Lord Sri Vishnu) in Kali Yuga also.

Narada Maharshi also gave us ‘Narada-smruti’, ‘Narada Bhakti-sutras’ to the welfare of the ordinary humans. Narada Mahashi is the ‘pravartaka’ (teacher and singer) of ‘Mahabharata’ in higher planets like Svarga Loka, etc.

Narada Maharshi’s one darshanam (divine view) in Mahabharata happens in ‘Sabha-parvam’. Narada Maharshi came to see the ‘Rajyabhishekam’ of Yudhishthira (Dharmaraaja) in Maya-sabha.

Yudhishthira went and received Narada Maharshi and did ‘Atithi-seva’ (Serving the Guest).

Narada Maharshi gave His blessings to Yudhishthira and said “O Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira)! I am happy to see the ‘abhishekam’ of the Dharma-Devata in human form (Yudhishthira, the avatar of Yamadharmaraja / Lord Sri Yama Deva).

Will you follow all the ways which your ancestors and elders followed and did Dharma-sthapana (Dharma establishment)? Will you look after all the people in your nation with ‘Samaana-drushti’ (with eauality)?

I am sure you are not having ‘dhana-lobham’ (money avidity) and treating some with ‘Prema’ (love and care) and the others with ‘Dvesham’ (enmity).

If such a thing is done then it will lead to ‘anarthas’ (great problems). And ultimately this will destroy the King and Kingdom itself.

A Raja (King) must be a ‘Marga-darshi’ (guide Guru) for the subjects / people). ‘Dhana-kanksha’ (greed towards money) will lead to ‘Sarva-nashanam’ (compelte destruction). Sleeping in the day, staying awake in the night leads to ‘anarogyam’ (illness).

Your ministers must be duty oriented, have ‘nirmala-manas’ (clear mindset), have ‘Kushagra-buddhi’ (sharp mind), have no ‘Svaartham’ (selfishness).

You must test the ‘Vidya’ (education), ‘Vivekam’ (sanity / wiseness) and ‘Shiila-svabhavam’ (character / nature) of people and recruit them as ‘rajya mantris’ (Government officials).

You must never give ‘Unnata-padavi’ (higher level jobs) to ‘adhamas’ (unrighteous people) and ‘madhyamas’ (middle level); and for ‘uttamas’ (highly wise and educated) never give ‘alpa-padavi’ (lower level jobs).

Because of this, the people who get ‘Unnata-padavi’ (higher level jobs) will not know how to do the job, the people who get ‘alpa-padavi’ will face ‘avamanam’ (shame) and may try to spoil the nation out of frustration.

You must do your own ‘dharma’ (duty); if you hand it over to your sub-ordinates, then your respect will decrease and will lead to your downfall. The ‘rajya sevakas’ (government officials) must be paid good salaries.

You must be extra careful with the people who do ‘prana-tyagam’ (give life for the nation) and save the Kingdom. You must very carefully look after their families.

Else, no one in future will voluntarily come forward for ‘Desha-rakshanam’ (protecting the nation). ‘Desha-rakshana’ will thus be destroyed. It is the most important duty of you to look after them well.

Of the Government servants some will be very bright. They perform there duties very well. You must recognise them and keep promoting them only to higher posts.

Else these bright people will loose ‘Utsaham’ (zeal of work) and this will destroy your nation and will also cause ‘apakhyaati’ (ignominy) to you.

Similarly, you must do ‘ghana-sanmanam’ (respect) to people who do ‘sahasa-karyas’ (adventurous work) and people who are ‘Panditas’ (learnt people).

Always remember, there will be very few people who will be ‘Panditas’ (learnt people) and have ‘Pratibha’ (talent). The very presence of such people in your nation will increase your Kingdom’s glory.

Your Kingdom will have two kinds of calamities: One is natural (due to storms, floods etc.);

The other because of people who don’t have ‘Samskaram’ (dharmic moral) and are ‘mudhas’ (fool) will have the beastliness.

(Since they are mudhas they don’t listen to wife and good people, thinking that whatever they do is good and correct).

If King is a ‘dhishali’ (brave, wise and rich), then these people will lead their life in some corner. If not, these people only will do ‘himsa’ (violence) and loot the people and Kingdom.

Additionally if the King has ‘dhana-lobham’ (greediness), these people will rob the people in King’s name. A King must always see that the number of such ‘murkhas’ (fools), mudhas (beastliness people) doesn’t increase.

Immediately you must punish the people who deserve to be punished according to the ‘Danda-neeti-shastram’ (one of the Shastras of Sanatana Dharma relating to Dharma, that is, with respect to punishment).

Whatever may happen you must never leave them unpunished. Else robbery, murders, everything will increase. There is no bigger foolishness than leaving such people freely.

King must ensure that subjects / people don’t have ‘agni-pramadam’ (problems causing due to fire) etc. King must provide heath-care to all and ensure everybody gets clean water.

It is the duty of the King to protect ‘Anathas’ (less blessed / orphan), handicapped etc. King must appoint Tax collectors with utmost care. King must not appoint murkhas (fools) who cut ‘Sandal-wood’ trees for wood.

Tax collectors must collect tax carefully like how a garland-maker carefully makes the garland without spoiling the flowers.

Many foreign business people come to your Kingdome. You must not burden them with heavy taxes. Else they will never come again. In the same way you must ensure that they pay taxes very promptly.

You must look after your health properly and eat food which is prepared with ‘Parishubhrata’ (clean and prepared in a way as recommended by our Shastras).

Along with physical health if the King needs to maintain mental health he must spend some time in ‘Sat-kalakshepam’ (Godly / spirutual works) with ‘Sat-purushas’ (dharmic / divine people) and ‘Panditas’ (learnt people).

O Dharmanandana (Dharmaraya / Yudhisthira)! I know that you know all these. However it is my vidhi (duty) to tell you all these.”

Every line in this story (post) shows things which even recent Kings like Sri Krishnadevaraya and Chhatrapati Shivaji firmly followed. (and exactly the things not at all followed by many Kings / Politicians today??).

This is the difference between the Dharmic and Adharmic people. Never-ever give respect to Adharmic people.
