Goddess Sri Saraswati Devi (Sanskrit: श्री सरस्वती देवी) is the goddess of ‘vaak’ (vocal), that is, anything related to vocal like art, music, knowledge, speech, wisdom, studies etc. She is a part of the Tri Devis, that is, first is Sri Maha Lakshmi Devi, second is Sri Saraswati Devi and third is Sri Parvati Devi.

The earliest mention of Saraswati as a Bhagavati (Divine goddess) is in the Rigveda. She has remained significant as a goddess from the Vedic period through modern times of Hindu traditions.

Sri Sarasvati Devi is usually will be having four arms, holds the Vedas, a maala (rosary), a water pot and a musical instrument Veena. Each of these items have symbolic meaning in Hinduism.

Now, let us move to the “Saraswati Namastubhyam shloka in Sanskrit (Hindi), Kannada, English”:

Saraswati Namastubhyam (Stotram) and other Stotrams with lyrics (Education, Knowledge etc.) in Sanskrit (Hindi) is as given below:

1. || सरस्वती देवी स्तोत्रं ||

सरस्वति नमस्तुभ्यं वरदे कामरूपिणि |
विद्यारम्भं करिष्यामि सिद्धिर्भवतु मे सदा || (Meaning given below)

2. || सरस्वती देवी स्तोत्रं ||

या कुंदेंदु तुषारहार धवला या शुभ्र वस्त्रावृता |
या वीणावरदंड मंडितकरा या श्वेतपद्मासना ||

या ब्रह्माच्युत शंकर प्रभृतिभिः देवैः सदा पूजिता |
सा मां पातु सरस्वती भगवती निःशेष जाड्यापहा || (Meaning given below)

3. || अथा महा सरस्वती ध्यानं ||

श्रीरस्तु || अष्टबाहुं शुभ्रवर्णं सृष्टिकार्यधुरंधरां

ಶೂಲಾಧ್ಯಯುಧಸಂಯುಕ್ತಾಂ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚೈತನ್ಯರೂಪಿಣೀಂ

vidyārambhaṁ kariṣyāmi sid’dhirbhavatu mē sadā || (Meaning given below)

2. || sarasvati dēvi stōtraṁ ||

yā kundēndu tuṣārahāra dhavalā yā śubhra vastrāvr̥tā |
yā vīṇāvaradaṇḍa maṇḍitakarā yā śvētapadmāsanā ||

yā brahmācyuta śaṅkara prabhrr̥tibhiḥ dēvai: Sadā pūjitā |
sā māṁ pātu sarasvatī bhagavatī niḥśēṣa jāḍyāpahā || (Meaning given below)

3. || athā mahā sarasvati dēvi dhyānaṁ ||

śrīrastu || aṣṭabāhuṁ śubhravarṇaṁ sr̥ṣṭikāryadhurandharāṁ
śūlādhyayudhasanyuktāṁ brahmacaitan’yarūpiṇīṁ
śuklamālyāmbaradharāṁ sarvadēvanamaskr̥tāṁ
mahāsarasvatīṁ devīṁ bhaktyā tāṁ praṇamāmyahaṁ ||

sarasvati namastubhyaṁ sarva dēvi namō namaḥ
śānta rūpē śaśidharē sarva yōgē namō namaḥ || (Meaning given below)

Meaning for “सरस्वति नमस्तुभ्यं वरदे कामरूपिणि” shloka: Saraswati: Bhagavati Sri Saraswati, you are the Goddess who rules the realm of intelligence; Namastubhyam: I do Namaste (Salutations) to you;

Varade: You are the giver of boons; Kama-Roopini: You are the one who convert our desires into fruition; Vidyarambham = Beginning of education; Kariṣyāmi = To start; Siddhir = Accomplishment; Bhavatu = Be it so. mē sadā = Always

Meaning : “O Goddess Saraswati, you are the Goddess who rules over the realm of the intelligence. I do namaste to you. You are the giver of boons. You are the one who convert our desires into fruits.

I am starting my education and thus I need your blessings to accomplishment it. You always bless me to complete my education.”

Meaning foryā kundēndu tuṣārahāra dhavalā yā śubhra vastrāvr̥tā” shloka:

Namaste (Divine salutations) to Sri Saraswati Devi, Who is pure white like Jasmine flower, you are having the coolness of Moon, you have the brightness of Snow and has the shine like the garland of Pearls.

You are covered with pure divine white garments, your hands are adorned with Veena (a stringed musical instrument) and the boon-giving staff.

You are seated on pure white Lotus. You are always adored by Sri Brahma Deva, Bhagavan Sri Achyuta (Bhagavan Sri Vishnu), Lord Shankara and other Devatas. O Sri Saraswati Devi, please protect me and remove my ignorance completely.

Sri Saraswati Devi is highly important to all and especially for someone who is doing jobs in relation to ‘vaak’ (vocal) like a writer, a student, a journalist, a poet, a preacher, an analyst, an astrologer, a musician, a singer, philosopher, etc.

This is because so that he / she to become more proficient and also to excel in their particular field(s). The divine blessings and grace of ‘vaak devi’ (Vocal Goddess) is very much essential for everyone.

Sri Saraswati Devi’s pooja / divine worship is 100% necessary for spiritual enlightenment for all humanbeings on earth. Without her blessings we can’t do anything related to vocal (vaak) works.

More information about Goddess Sri Saraswati Devi is as given below:

1. Sri Saraswati Devi is the divine consort of Sri Brahma Deva.

2. Sri Saraswati Devi is the ‘Veda Abhimani Devata’ (Controlling deity of the Vedas) without whose (She is also called as Brahmani) blessings it is impossible to get the ‘yathartha gnyaana’ (Correct knowledge) of Vedas.

3. Sri Saraswati Devi as a ‘Veda Abhimani Devata’, is placed in 4th ‘Kakshya’ (In hierarchy) along with Sri Bharati Devi (She is the consort of Sri Vayu Deva) as per Dvaita Siddhanta.

4. In the divine ‘Vayu Stuti’ written by Sri Trivikrama Panditacharya (A divine teacher of the Dvaita Siddhanta), he is making a reference and adoration to Sri Saraswati (Vaak Devi) who is also known as ‘Sharada Devi’ along with Bhagavan Sri Vishnu, Sri Maha Lakshmi Devi, and Sri Brahma Deva.

This indicates that, one should always offer ‘namaste’ (Divine salutations) to these ‘chatur devas’ (Divine quartet) before commencing any work like literary work or making any stotra, parayana, pravachana etc.

[Salutations has to be done in this order: Highest salutations to Bhagavan Sri Vishnu, second to Sri Maha Lakshmi Devi, third to Sri Brahma Devi (or Sri Vayu Deva – He is the next Sri Brahma Deva) and fourth to Sri Saraswati Devi (or Sri Bharati Devi – She is the divine consort of Sri Vayu Deva and is the next Sri Saraswati Devi.)]

We should always remember that, anything that we gain in the form of knowledge will never ever perish and will be an eternal asset for any human being living on this earth.

(We may have heard that suddenly a 3 year old child starts singing with utmost perfectness. This happens only because of her earlier lives hard work. She / He would had done all the hard work in her / his earlier lives and thus in this life it become easy for that child).

When a person can acquire divine ‘vaak vidya’ (Vocal related divine and material education):

1. Only when he / she is will have vinaya / divine humility. | 2. Only when he / she get the knowledge in the way of neeti (right way). |

3. If is no ‘vinaya and neeti’ is not present, then he / she even though highly educated is considered as 100% illiterate. | 4. In such illiterate (Even though educated) person ‘Sri Vidya Lakshmi’ will never ever reside.

Significance of Sri Saraswati Devi pooja is as given below:

1. Saraswati pooja is one of the common festival in India. | 2. It is celebrated in Ashvayuja Masa Shukla Paksha.

3. In India and especially in South India (Karnataka and A.P.), people have a system called golu (Display of dolls) for all the nine days during the Navarati and they invite their relatives, friends and family for arishina kumkuma (To take the divine turmeric and saffron).

4. Do the Saraswathy Avaahana on the moola nakshathra day.

5. According to ‘Chandramana panchanga’ (Divine Indian Lunar calendar), it has to be celebrated in the first nine days of Sharad Ritu (Indian Autumn season). Thus it is also called as Sharad-Navaratri.

6. In ‘Ashvayuja Maasam (month)’ greatness of ‘Bhavishya Purana’ is preached by Bhagavan Sri Vishnu to Sri Narada Devarshi.

7. Starting from the day one of Ashvayuja maasam (month) and till the tenth day, one should observe Navaratri divine custom to please Sri Maha Lakshmi in form of Nava (9) Durgas.

8. The Bhavishya Purana eulogizes that Sri Maha Lakshmi Devi will fulfill all her devotees’ wishes by taking various forms like Jayanti, Mangala, Kali, Swadha, Swaha, Kapalini, Durga, Kshama, Shivaa, Dhatree.

9. In South India (People who follow Dvaita Siddhanta), it is very common to recite ‘Sri Srinivasa Kalyana’, ‘Lakshmi shobhana’, ‘Sundara Kandam’ etc. by ladies all the days and all the men have the practice of doing ‘Sri Madhwa Vijaya’ parayana (reading, hearing, teaching) on all the nine days and also do the samarpana on Vijayadasami day (i.e., on Madhwa Jayanti).

10. One has to chant Sri Sarawati Devo shlokas and songs as much as possible on all the nine days of the Navaratri.
