There are totally 10 Indriyas (Sensory Organs). There names are as given here :

Five pancha jnana Indriyas (Sensory Organs) – srothra (ear), thvak (skin), chaksu (eye), jihva (tongue) and aakrAna (nose).

Five pancha karma Indriyas (Sensory Organs) – vAk (mouth), pAni (hand), pAdha (legs), pAyu (anus) and upastha (genital).

Similarly, he had won over all the ‘dashadiks’, that is, he had won over all the ten directions of the world. The names of the ten diks (directions) are:

Uttara (North), Purva (East), Dakshina (South), Paschima (West), Eshanya (North-East), Agneya (South-East), Nairutya (South-West), Vayuvya (North-West).

18. Birth name of Dasharatha : The birth and original name of Dasharatha is Nemi.

Information about King Dasharatha early life is as given here: As per Valmiki Ramayana and Moola Ramayana, King Dasharatha was an avatar (incarnation) of Svayambhuva Manu, the son of the creator god Lord Sri Brahma.

King Dasharatha was the son of King Aja of Kosala and Indumati of Vidarbha. Kosala is present day Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha is present day Maharashtra). King Dasharatha by birth was originally named Nemi.

Later, King Dasharatha acquired the name ‘Dasharatha’ as his chariot could move in all ten directions, fly, and return to earth as per his own wish and will, and similarly, he could fight with ease in all of these directions. Similarly, King Dasharatha was the King of all the ten directions.

King Dasharatha became the ruler of Kosala (Capital was Ayodhya) after the death of his father King Aja. King Dasharatha was a great warrior who subjugated many of the kingdoms of the world with his prowess and slew many demons and demonic kings in battle.

According to the Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa of the Valmiki Ramayana (in chapter 34, verses 10–13), King Dasharatha had around 350 wives. Among these, three of whom were his favorite queens namely Kausalya Devi (chief queen), while Sumitra Devi and Kaikeyi Devi the second and third favorite consorts.

Kausalya Devi hailed from the kingdom of Dakshina Kosala, Sumitra Devi came from Kashi (Varanasi), and similarly, Kaikeyi Devi came from the Kekeya Kingdom.

Birth of Bhagavan Sri Rama (Yagna to begot sons) – Dasharatha Maharaja of Suryavamsha, did not had male child with his wives.

Thus at this juncture, Vashishtha Maharshi directs King Dasharatha Maharaja, to do the ‘Putra Kamesthi Yagna’ under the pourohitya (priest administration) of ‘Rishyashringa’ (He is the son-in-law of King Dasharatha Maharaja).

Then Yagna purusha deva came with the golden vessel carrying the prasadam of the homa. King Dasharatha distributed the same to his wives.

First half of the prasadam Dasharatha gave it to Kausalya Devi, half of the remaining, he gave it to Sumitra Devi. Then out of the remaining quarter portion, he distributed to Sumitra Devi and Kaikeyi Devi.

As such, Kausalya Devi and Kaikeyi Devi got one portion of the paayasam (kheer), whereas Sumitra got two portions. Bhagavan Lord Sri Rama was born (appeared) with chakra, shankha, gada and padma, wearing pitambara (This is the original form).

Also, Bhagavan Lord Sri Ramachandra was wearing kireeta (crown), kundala (earrings). As soon as Kausalya saw Bhagavan Lord Sri Rama, he appeared as a small baby. Sumitra got Lakshmana and Shatrughna in Ashlesha nakshatra (Two separate years).

Bharata (Bharat) was born to Kaikeyi in Pushya nakshatra. Here Bhagavan Lord Sri Ramachandra is saakshat paramatma (An avatar of Bhagavan Lord Sri Vishnu). Lord Sri Adishesha came as Lakshmana for the seva (to serve) Bhagavan Lord Sri Rama.

Shankha Panchajanya (Conch) and Sudarshana Chakra (disc) of Bhagavan Lord Sri Vishnu were born as Bharata (Bharat) and Shatrughna respectively.

Dasharatha boons to Kaikeyi : Manthara a deceitful woman and maidservant of Queen Kaikeyi, convinced her (Kaikeyi) that the throne belonged to her own son Bharata and her stepson Lord Sri Rama should be sent to forest exile for 14 years.

Manthare, an old and ugly maidservant, reminded Queen Kaikeyi of the promise that King Dasharatha had made to her (Kaikeyi) when Kaikeyi had saved King Dasharatha in the great war against the demons, that she (Kaikeyi) was promised with 2 boons with which she could make Bharata, the king of Kosala (Ayodhya).

After this heated exchange of words, Kaikeyi reminded King Dasharatha about two more boons to be fulfilled by him to her. She remembered the time when she had saved him from the demons during the celestial battle against Sambasura, the enemy of both Lord Indra and King Dasaratha.

In a fierce battle between Sambasrua and Lord Indra (and Dasharatha), King Dasharatha’s chariot wheel broke and Sambasura’s arrow pierced the king’s shield and lodged in his chest.

Kaikeyi, acting as King Dasharatha’s charioteer, quickly repaired the broken wheel and then drove the Dhasharatha’s chariot from the battlefield.

Kaikeyi nursed the injured King Dasharatha. Impressed by her courage and timely help and support, King Dasharatha said to Kaikeyi to ask for two boons from him. However, Kaikeyi decided to ask for those boons later and King Dasharatha was obliged to fulfill them.

Now in the present situation, Kaikeyi demanded that Bharata be crowned as the King of Kosala (Ayodhya) and Lord Sri Rama be sent to the forest (exile) for fourteen years. Hearing this, King Dasaratha immediately fainted and spent the night in a miserable condition in Kaikeyi’s palace.

Information about the killing of Shravana Kumara is as given here : After Lord Sri Rama went to the forest exile along with wife Goddess Sita Devi and brother Lakshmana, King Dasharatha went to Queen Kausalya’s palace.

King Dasharatha suddenly remembered an incident that had happened in his past. King Dasharatha explained to Queen Kausalya that he had accidentally killed a young man named Shravana Kumara, mistaking him for a deer.

King Dasharatha, who was then the prince of Kosala (Ayodhya), had gone to the banks of the river Sarayu to hunt for the animals who were causing problems to his Kingdom’s subjects.

Nemi (Dasharatha) was adept at hunting by determining the direction of sound (Shabedavedhin Vidya) and heard the sound of an animal drinking water. Mistaking it for a deer, Nemi (Dasharatha) shot an arrow. He was saddened when he heard the cry of a human when the arrow found its target.

Nemi (Dasharatha) found a young Brahmin boy (Shravana Kumara) lying on the bank of the river with an arrow lodged in his chest. Nemi (Dasharatha) was distraught and apologized to young Shravana Kumara who was trying to revive and help him.

The young Brahmin boy forgave Nemi (Dasharatha) for the unintentional, unjust act and forced Nemi (Dasharatha) to pull out the arrow from his chest. Shravana Kumara told Nemi (Dasharatha) to take a pitcher of water to his blind parents who were waiting for him, thirsty from all the travel.

The young Brahmin boy died because of his injuries. Nemi (Dasharatha) approached the blind couple and told them about the unfortunate death of their son. The grieving parents cursed Prince Dasharatha (Nemi) like this:

“As we are suffering and dying due to the loss of our beloved Son Shravana Kumara, you too shall have the same fate.” Dasharatha ends the discussion with Queen Kausalya by saying that his end is near and the curse of Shravana Kumara’s parents has come true.

Vishwamitra Maharishi’s visit to Ayodhya – One day Maharshi Vishwamitra visited Ayodhya and met King Dasharatha. King Dasharatha gave all the respects to the great sage and asked him, “how can I serve you O great Maharishi Vishwamitra?”

Maharishi Vishwamitra told to King Dasharatha that demons like Maricha and Subahu are disturbing and spoiling the yajna kaaryaas of Rishis and that Lord Sri Rama and Lakshmana to be sent with him for the protection of all the Rishis.

King Dasharatha very politely questioned Maharishi Vishwamitra as to how these two young children could help Maharishi Vishwamitra in controlling the strong demons and told that he himself (Dasharatha) will come with him (Maharishi Vishwamitra).

Vishwamitra Maharishi said to King Dasharatha that he wanted Lord Sri Rama only. Then Maharishi Vasishtha advised King Dasharatha about the divine powers of Lord Sri Rama (An avatar of Lord Vishnu) and as per the advise of Sage Vasishtha, King Dasharatha allowed Lord Sri Rama to go with him.

(Note : At this time Lord Sri Rama’s age was 14 years and Lakshmana was one year younger to Lord Sri Rama, that is, Lakshmana’s age was 13 years.)

Information about how King Dhasharatha and others called Lord Sri Rama in Valmiki Ramayana is as given below:

King Dasharatha was calling Lord Sri Rama as ‘RĀMA’. Kausalya Devi was calling Lord Sri Rama as ‘RĀMABHADRA’. Kaikeyi Devi was calling Lord Sri Rama as ‘RAMACHANDRA’. Maharishi Vasishtha was calling Lord Sri Rama as ‘VEDASE’.

Other Rishis were calling Lord Sri Rama as ‘RAGHUNATHA’. Goddess Sri Sita Devi was calling Lord Sri Rama as ‘NATHA’. King Janaka (Seeradhwaja) was calling Lord Sri Rama as ‘SEETHAPATI’.  Sloka (Hymn) for this is as given below:

When King Dasharatha asked the citizens of Kosala (Ayodhya) about “to make Rama the king”, the reply was as given below:

In Ramayana when King Dasharatha tells his citizens of Kosala (Ayodhya) about his (Dasharatha) decision to make Lord Sri Rama the Yuvaraja (Prince) of Ayodhya, all of them in one voice hail the decision. They are overjoyed, jubilant and ecstatic to that news.

King Dasharatha seeing their enthusiasm was both happy and sad. King Dasharatha thought they (citizens) would say at-least once that, “King Dasharatha, you please continue as the King”.

Seeing their (citizens) eagerness in “getting rid of him”, King Dasharatha asks them why are they so eager for Lord Sri Rama.

For this, citizens first apologized to King Dasharatha and said that, “We have nothing against you O King Dasharatha, but in our lifetime we want to be under Lord Sri Rama’s rule. At-least once we want to be called Lord Sri Rama’s subjects. In our eagerness we didn’t even care about your feelings.”
