In Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma) demons or asuras or rakshasas are present since the creation of this Brahmanda (Universe).

And will surely stay on this earth until the ‘ananta kalam’ (unknown infinite time frame).

Now, you may ask the question, “why do Lord Vishnu allow demons to take birth on this earth?“.

Answer is : Demons or asuras or rakshasas are those kind of living creatures, who follow Adharma (against Dharma).

If and only if Adharma is present on this earth, people will be able to understand the difference between Dharma and Adharma.

Especially in this present Yuga of Kali Yuga, 99.99 % of people are Adharmis.

Few may be doing little Adharma, few may be doing average amount of Adharma, and few may be doing lots of Adharma.

The percentage may vary, but in Kali Yuga Adharmis (people who are against Dharma) are more, when compared to Dharmis (people who Dharma).

Now, let us know a list of demons or asuras or rakshasas names with their basis information asper Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma).

I urge people not to use the word mythology when it comes to Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma).

As this word was given to us by Europeans to spread the false information about Sanatana Dharma.

First let us know the names of the demons and later let us know a brief information about those demons with images.

List of the demons (asuras / rakshasas) in Hinduism (Hindu mythology) are as given below:

Hidimba

Hiranyakashipu

Prahasta

Hiranyaksha

Holika or Sinhika

Devamba

Ravana

Tataka

Indrajita (Meghanatha)

Shurpanakha

And many more are as given below…

Basic information about the demons (asuras / rakshasas) in Hinduism (Hindu mythology) are as given below:

Hiranyakashipu – He was slayed down by Lord Narasimha. He is the son of Kashyapa and Diti.

Hiranyaksha – He was slayed down by Lord Varaha. He is the son of Kashyapa and Diti.

Holika or Sinhika – She herself got eliminated when trying to kill Prahlada in fire. She is the daughter of Kashyapa and Diti.

Prahlada – Even though born in the demons lineage, he was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu.

He is the son of Hiranyakashipu and Kayadhu. His wife name is Dhriti.

Virochana – He is the son of Prahlada & Dhriti (mother) and father of Bali Chakravarti (Mahabali).

Virochana was also an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, similarly to his father Prahlada.

Devamba – She is the mother of Bali Chakravarti.

Bali Chakravarti (Mahabali) – He is the son of Virochana & Devamba and grandson of Prahlada.

He was pushed to Patala Loka by Lord Vamana.

Balic Chakravarti (Mahabali) was also an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, similarly to his father Virochana and grandfather Prahlada.

Bali Chakravarti, even today is the king of the Patala Loka (Under world).

Bali Chakravarti will be in the next Lord Indra in the next Manvantara.

Banasura (Vanasura) – He is the son of Bali Chakravarti and great-grandson of Prahlada.

Once in the war Banasura was spared by Lord Krishna as he belongs to Prahlada lineage. He had 1000 hands.

Lord Krishna spares Banasura, because Lord Narasimha (Lord Vishnu) had promised Prahlada, that He (Lord Vishnu) will not kill any of his (Prahlada) family members.

Ravana – He is the son of Vishrava and Kaikesi.

He was slayed down by Lord Rama. He was half brother of Kubera.

Ravana had 10 heads and thus he was also known as ‘dashanana’ (Dashanana – Dasha = 10 and Nana = Heads).

Akshayakumara – He is the youngest son of Ravana and Mandodari.

He was eliminated by Lord Hanuman.

Lord Hanuman kills this demon when Lord Hanuman enters the Lanka in search of Goddess Sita Devi.

Atikaya – He was the son of Ravana & Mandodari in Ramayana epic.

Atikaya’s wife name was Dhanyamalini in the Ramayana epic.

Indrajita (Meghanatha) – He was the prince of Lanka and a conqueror of Indra Loka (Thus Indrajita).

He is the son of king Ravana and Mandodari. He was slayed down by Lakshmana.

This same Indrajita takes birth as Dushasana during the Mahabharata period.

Since this cruel minded Dushasana had disrobed Draupadi Devi, the great and mighty Bhima kills this Dushasana during the Mahabharata war.

Kumbhakarna – He is the second son of Vishrava (father) and Kaikesi (mother).

He is the brother of Ravana. He was eliminated by Lord Rama.

He used to sleep half of the year. He had a huge body.

Since his ears were in the shape of a pot, he is called as Kumbhakarna.

Kumbhakarna = Kumbha + Karna = Pot + Ears = Pot shaped ears.

Mandodari – She was the queen of Lanka and consort of Ravana.

Her parents are Mayasura (father) and Hema (mother).

Mayayi and Dundubhi – They both are the brothers of Mandodari.

Maricha – He was the maternal uncle of Ravana, who aided (as golden deer) in the abduction of Goddess Sita Devi.

His parents are Sunda (father) and Tataka (mother). His brother was Subahu.

Kumbha and Nikumbha – They are the Lord of the Pisachas and sons of Kumbhakarna (father) and Vajrajwala (mother).

Prahasta – He was the chief commander of Ravana’s army of Lanka and was also a son of Ravana.

Shurpanakha – She was the youngest sister of Ravana, King of Lanka.

Her husband name is called as Vidyutjiva.

Here Shurpanakaha = Shurpa + Nakha = Very sharp + Nails. Someone who has very sharp nails.

Subahu – He is the son of Tataka (mother) and Sunda (father). His brother name is Maricha.

Tataka – She is the mother of Subahu and Maricha. She was slayed down by Lord Rama.

Lord Rama slayed down Tataka as per the request of the great Maharishi Vishwamitra.

Vibhishana – Even though he was born in the demon lineage, he was great devotee of Lord Rama.

He is the second brother of Ravana. His wife name was Sarama and daughter name is Trijata.

Hidimba – He is the brother of demoness Hidimbi and a forest dweller.

Hidimbi – She is the wife of great and mighty Bhima and mother of Ghatotkacha in the Mahābhārata.
