Just before going to “How Markandeya became immortal (chiranjivi) | Why Lord Shiva is called as Mrityunjaya“, let us have some brief information.

Markandeya parents names are : Sage Mrikanda or Mrikandu (father), Marudmati (mother).

Who is Markandeya Maharishi : Maharshi Markandeya is a very pious and learned Maharishi who is known for his eternal youthful state. He is blessed by Lord Sri Vishnu as Chiranjeevi (very long lived).

Maharshi Markandeya was born in the clan of Maharshi Bhrigu and was known for his devotion to Lord Sri Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

The significance of Maharishi Markandeya is mentioned in Srimad Bhagavatam (purana) and he is considered as one of the revered and ancient sages of Sanatana Dharma.

Birth of Markandeya : Markandeya was born to the great Sage (Rishi) Mrikandu and his wife Marudmati, and as the saintly couple wished, Lord Shiva blessed them to give birth to a learned and divine child.

But as per the astrological predictions of Markandeya, he is supposed to die at his young age of 16 years itself.

Although Sage (Rishi) Mrikandu was very upset about the short life span of his son Markandeya, he firmly believed that Lord Sri Vishnu and Shiva would protect and deliver his son from Lord Sri Yama (God of Death) and will bless his son with long life.

Information about Markandeya praying to Lord Sri Vishnu to know about Pralaya is as given below:

Once Markandeya did the aradhana (आराधन) (ārādhana), that is, pooja, worship, tapas of Lord Sri Vishnu and asked Lord Sri Vishnu to show “how the ‘Pralaya’ (End of Universes) will be?

Lord Sri Vishnu agreed and showed him the Pralaya (End of Universes), wherein he saw the raudra-nartana (रौद्र नर्तन) (raudra nartana) (Great Tribulation phase) of the pralaya.

Then, Goddess Sri Parvati Devi told Lord Shiva that the bhaktas (devotees) will ask for boon of  “Never to die”.

But, Lord Shiva told that all the bhaktas (devotees) will not ask such a boon.

To test Markandeya both Goddess Sri Parvati Devi and Lord Shiva came in front of Markandeya and asked him as to what boon he wanted?

Bhakta (Devotee) Markandeya told as below:

“भगवत्युच्युतां भक्तिं तत्परेषु तथा त्वयी” | “ಭಗವತ್ಯುಚ್ಯುತಾಂ ಭಕ್ತಿಮ್ ತತ್ಪರೇಷು ತಥಾ ತ್ವಯೀ” | “bhagavatyucyutāṁ bhaktim tatparēṣu tathā tvayī” | “bhagavatyuchyutaam bhaktim tatparEShu tathaa tvayi”

Meaning is here: always give me pure bhakti (devotion) in you and Lord Sri Vishnu“.

Pleased with Markandeya bhakti (devotion), Lord Shiva gave him a boon that he will be Charanjeevi. Thus, Markandeya got the boon of Chiranjeevi (very very long life).

Also, since during this process, Lord Shiva fights with Lord Sri Yama Deva and wins over Lord Sri Yama Deva (Lord Sri Yama Deva is called Mrityu / मृत्यु / mr̥tyu).

Thus since then, Lord Shiva is called as Lord Sri Mrityunjaya, as Lord Shiva wins over Mrityu Deva, that is, Lord Sri Yama Deva.

This may look like a small story. But here there are many points to be noted:

1. Firstly, we need to have pure bhakti (devotion) towards Lord Sri Vishnu and all the other Devatas / Demigods.

2. If we have pure bhakti (devotion) towards Lord Sri Vishnu and all the other Devatas (Demigods),

we will definitely get all the ashirvadam (Blessings) from both Lord Sri Vishnu and from all the Devatas / Demigods (Including material and spiritual).

3. On the contrary, if we ask for the ashirvadam (Blessings) like rakshasa / demonic people ask, we may get the ashirvadam (Blessings) for that also. But, that won’t last long and it won’t be satvika (divine).

4. Such asuras (demons) like Hiranyakashipu, Ravana, Duryodhana, Bakasura, Bhasmasura, Shishupala, Naraksura etc. etc. etc. are not living on this earth.

Even their families are not living on this earth today. Lord Sri Vishnu and other Devatas (Demigods) show no mercy on these rakshasas (demons) and will definitely destroy completely.

5. Even today, we are seeing people trying to show the terrorism on the innocent people all over the world.

Yes, definitely these people will also be destroyed without any mercy one or the other day as per their Karmas.

6. On the other side, if we have real bhakti (devotion) towards Lord Sri Vishnu and all the other Devatas / Demigods, we will definitely get the ashirvadam (Blessings) as per our bhakti (devotion) and Karmas.
