Just before going to “Narada Maharishi Information, Facts (Previous life, birthday) (Priyavrata story) | What is the story of Narada Muni? | Who is Narada in Hinduism? | Who gave curse to Narada Muni? | How powerful is Narad Muni?“, let us have a brief some brief information.

Some of the other questions people want to know about Maharshi Narada are : Narad muni wife | Narada muni instrument name | Narada muni story | Narada muni veena name | Narad muni father | Narad muni brother | Narada god | Is narad muni avatar of vishnu

Narada name meaning : नारं ददातीति नारदः || ನಾರಂ ದದಾತೀತಿ ನಾರದ: || nāraṁ dadātīti nārada: || Here, नारं / ನಾರಂ / nāraṁ = Knowledge || ददातीति / ದದಾತೀತಿ / dadātīti = Giver (Privider). Thus, Narada is someone who gives knowledge to the followers of Dharma (righteousness).

Sage or Devarshi or Maharshi Narada is a highly knowledgeable, great and powerful Rishi. He is is one of the 12 Prajapatis of Lord Sri Brahma. He is one of the ‘manasaputra’ (born from the mind) of Lord Sri Brahma, that is, he is son by thought of Lord Sri Brahma.

Among all the Rishis (Sages), Maharishis, Devarishis, Brahmarishi etc. Maharshi or Devarshi Narada is regarded as the best of the ‘Rishis’ (Sages) and thus Maharshi Narada holds a very special place amongst the Rishis.

Devarshi Naradar is in the 14th Kakshya in taratamya (heirarchy) and he is more senior than Maharshi Bhrigu, Lord Sri Agni. Maharshi Narada requested Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa to write Srimad Bhagavatam.

Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa, after writing 17 Puranas, was thinking that he was still not satisfied with all his works, then Sage Narada came and requested Lord Sri Vedavyasa to write Srimad Bhagavatam, thus He (Sage / Lord Vedavyasa) wrote Srimad Bhagavatam.

Maharshi Narada’s story as given in Srimad Bhagavatam is as given below:

Maharshi / Devarshi / Brahmarshi Narada’s story as explained by Lord (Sage) Sri Vedavyasa is available in Srimad Bhagavatam Prathama Skanda, Adhyaya 5, Sloka 23-31 (i.e.,1.5, 23-31; and again in Prathama Skanda, Adhyaya 6, Sloka 1.6, 5-36).

Story of Maharshi Narada – In the past, a Gandharva king had no sons due to earlier sinful karma. Then he performed “penance” at Pushkar Tirtha and got blessed with progeny by Lord Sri Rudra (Shiva).

There Narada (past life of Narada) was born and he was called as “Upabarhana / उपबर्हण” by Maharishi Vasishtha. When Upabarhana (Narada) was young, he was very beautiful and handsome.

After seeing Upabarhana (Narada), other Gandharva wives were attracted by his beauty and wanted to marry Upabarhana (Narada) and they all died intending to marry him and were reborn as 50 daughters of Chitraratha.

Upabarhana (Narada) married them all and was very happy. Once Upabarhana was invited to sing at Lord Sri Brahma’s assembly. Upabarhana (Narada) started singing and Rambha, the Apsara was dancing.

While the apsara Rambha was dancing, Upabarhana (Narada) could not control himself, he became attracted to her (with lust), he stopped singing.

Lord Sri Brahma got angry and cursed him to be born as a ‘Shudra’ and then after a certain period with Vaishnava people’s contact he would be reborn again as a Brahma Manasaputra (born from the mind), that is, as Maharshi Narada.

Then Narada was born as the son of lady named Kalavati i.e. as the son of a Shudra. Even when he was 5 years old, whenever he got a chance, he used to listen to the stories of Lord Sri Krishna. Once the 4 sages, that is, Sanatkumara and others came to the house of a Brahmin on Chaturmasya.

There the young Shudra Narada’s mother (Here, the name of Narada is not mentioned in Srimad Bhagavatam) and young Narada were serving those Brahmins. Being a Shudra, Narada ate the leftovers of those Brahmins with their permission.

As he was always with those Brahmins the young Shudra Narada used to hear many Vairagya and Bhagavat stories (Lord Sri Vishnu stories) from the sages. After consuming them with devotion, the young Shudra Narada attained ‘Great knowledge with devotion’, putting aside his Rajoguna and Tamoguna.

After some time, young shudra Narada’s mother Kalavati died of snakebite. Young shudra Narada by this time knew very well that Lord Sri Vishnu was supreme and he always meditated on Lord Sri Vishnu, circumambulating all parts of Bharata Kanda (India).

Then after some time, young shudra Narada died while meditating upon Lord Sri Vishnu. Then finally He was born from the knee of Lord Sri Brahma as a ‘Brahma Manasaputra’. By the grace of the Supreme Lord Sri Vishnu and with celibacy, Maharshi Narada roamed all the three worlds (Upper planets, Earth and Lower planets).

The veena carried by Maharshi Narada is called “Mahati (महती)”. Mention of the great Maharshi or Devarshi or Brahmarshi Narada is found in almost every Purana and in all yugas.

Sage Valmiki, also known as Adikavi, the first poet of the modern world, wrote the great epic called “Valmiki Ramayana” on the advice of Narada Muni (Sage). A robber by profession, Valmiki became a poet after he started chanting Lord Sri Rama’s taraka mantra ‘Rama or Sri Rama’ name.

Narada preached Ashtakshari Mantra “Om Namo Narayanaya” and “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” (Dvadashakshari Mantra) to young Dhruva, son of King Uttanapada, while he was going to do penance.

Narada taught Bhagavata Tattva (True and Divine Knowledge of Lord Sri Vishnu) to the devotee Prahlada, son of the demon king Hiranyakashipu. This was done when Lord Sri Indra was thinking that a child born from Kayadu would harm him and other deities.

But, Maharshi Narada advised Lord Sri Indra that the child to be born from Kayadu will be none other than “Parama / Great Vaishnava”. Thus, Lor Sri Indra blessed the child and left to his Swarga Loka.

Misconception about Maharshi Narada : People think that Maharshi Narada likes to create differences (conflict), but, this is completely wrong. Devarshi Narada was the one who brought together “Nara” and “Narayana”. He worked for the attainment of bliss and the complete elimination of suffering.

It is the blessing and order of Lord Sri Vishnu that Maharshi Narada should show the dharmic path to the pious people and the wrong path to the irreligious people.

As instructed by Lord Sri Vishnu, we pray to Lord Ganesha before praying to Lord Sri Vishnu, similarly Devarshi Narada is appointed by Lord Sri Vishnu to show the wrong path to the demonic people.

Maharshi Narada has got the habit of revealing secrets to both demigods and demons. Demigods and demons, eventually, hated each other. Narada’s actions often caused trouble and conflict between the gods, demons and humans, and such conflict eventually led to war.

Hence Narada, from his notorious mischief, acquired the name of Kalaha-priya or lover of quarrels. Narada told Kamsa that Lord Sri Krishna could be any one of the eight children and he forced Kamsa to kill the first six children of Vasudeva-Devaki.

It is also a work of God (Devata Karya / Lord Sri Vishnu’s works). Vasudeva’s first six sons were the sons of Kalanemi in their earlier birth, and as a curse they were killed by Kamsa. Thus, Maharshi Narada did this this to Kamsa.

Maharshi Narada described Ahalya’s beauty to Lord Sri Indra, who began lusting after Aharya Devi, which caused Gautama Muni to curse both Ahalya Devi and Lord Sri Indra, so that Gautama’s excessive penance would subside.

Devarshi Narada praised Ravana as superior to all the gods and Ravana felt so. Thus, Ravana was over confident of not been killed by humans and monkeys. But we all know what happened to Ravana. He was killed by Lord Sri Rama, who came in the human form.

Why does Narada always roams or tour the three worlds (wandering like a nomad / vagabond) – Daksha Prajapati once said to his sons “O my sons! Follow austerities and you will gain strength and spiritual glory. Then you should get married and live a contented life.”

In response to the father’s command, the children went to the Himalayas and began austere penance. Maharshi Narada went there and them like this:

Why are you doing penance like this? And then later get married? Maharshi Narada said that there is no happiness in married life. Devotion should be developed in Lord Sri Vishnu. Your aim should be to escape the misery of family life. Do you have to do penance only to get stuck in misery? Practice renunciation, yearn for liberation (Moksha).

Saying this, Devarshi Narada advised the sons of Daksha to take the path of asceticism and left. Maharshi Narada’s advice had a tremendous impact on the minds of Daksha’s sons.

Daksha’s sons vowed not to marry. This news upset Daksha. His anger knew no bounds. Daksha Prajapati cursed Devarshi Narada to be a wanderer forever! Narada was not disturbed by this curse.

“All good! I will spend my whole life wandering and preaching the best to the devotees of Lord Sri Vishnu,” Maharshi Narada decided. Thus, Devarshi Narada is shown as a wandering seer always on a journey, as he is reprimanded by Daksha to lead a wandering life without staying in one place.

Let’s know more information about Maharshi (Devarshi) Narada as given below:

Narada Maharishi (Devarishi) is the son of Lord Brahma Deva. While Lord Brahma Deva is the son of Lord Sri Vishnu himself. Narada Maharishi (Devarishi) is the only one personality, to whom Lord Sri Vishnu has blessed to travel anywhere without any vehicle(s).

Once Lord Sri Varaha Svami (Lord Sri Vishnu avatar), who is also known as Lord Sri BhuVaraha Swami, describes the incident which enabled King Priyavrata to attain to heaven from Prithvi (Mother Earth) or Bhuloka.

“Swayambhuva Manu lived during the first Kalpa. He had two sons – Priyavrata (Priyavrat) and Uttanapada (Uttanapad). Priyavrata was extremely virtuous by nature.

In course of time, he relinquished his throne and after distributing his kingdom among his sons went to Badrikashrama (Badrikashram – Today’s Badrinath Dham) to do penance. Once sage Narada Maharishi paid a visit to Priyavrata hermitage (ashram).

Priyavrata received his esteemed guest with all the respect which made Narada Maharishi extremely pleased. Priyavrata, then requested Narada Maharshi to narrate about some interesting incident which had occurred in his life.

Narada Maharishi narrated about an interesting incident which had happened while he was on his way to meet Priyavrata –

I experienced an amazing incident yesterday while I was passing by a lake in Shwetadweepa. I saw a divinely beautiful woman who was standing alone at the bank of that lake.

I was surprised to find such a beautiful woman at such a lonely place. For a moment, I became so infatuated by her beauty that I lost all control over my senses. My lust had made me devoid of all my knowledge and learning.

Now, I became very worried and ashamed of my conduct – but the damage had already been made. I immediately realized that she was not an ordinary woman.

To my surprise, I saw a form of a divine person visible clearly within her body. Within next few moments two other male forms revealed themselves.

Suddenly, all three of them disappeared leaving behind just that divine lady. I was dumb struck by this amazing incident. I asked her as to who she was.

The divine lady disclosed to me that she was none other then Goddess Savitri Devi, that is:

The mother of all the Vedas and since I was unable to recognize her therefore all the knowledge had vanished from my memory.

She also revealed to me that – the three divine men which had manifested themselves within her body were in fact the three Vedas, that is, Rigveda, Samaveda and Yajurveda.

After revealing these amazing facts to me, Goddess Savitri Devi assured me that by taking a bath in that lake I will not only regain my memory of the Vedas, but also of all my previous births.

I eulogized Goddess Savitri Devi and thanked her for the blessings showered on me. I then bathed in that lake and to my pleasant surprise, I now remembered everything of my past births as had been prophesized by Goddess Savitri Devi.”

Priyavrata was very surprised and requested Narada Maharishi to describe some interesting incident related with his past birth. Narada Maharshi narrated the following incident to him.

List of Narada Maharishi unknown facts are as given below:

Narada was Saraswata in Satya Yuga (Krita Yuga) : “In Satya Yuga, I was born in a brahmin family and was named Saraswata by my parents.

Narada a renowned scholar : I was very studious and grew up to become a renowned scholar. The almighty Bhagavan (Lord) Sri Vishnu had blessed me with immense riches and I never experienced scarcity of any kind in my life.

Narada wanted more spiritual knowledge : But, very soon I got bored of my monotonous and routine life. It had become clear to me that there was more to life than just worrying about the gains and losses.

Narada did penance for Moksha : So, I decided to do penance to attain Moksha (Divine salvation).

Narada distributed his wealth to his sons : I distributed all my wealth among my sons and went to the bank of river Saraswati. Here I first performed the rituals of shraddha in the name of my ancestors and then performed yagyas.

Narada donated wealth to poor and needy : I also donated lot of wealth to poor people. Being satisfied, I then went to Pushkara teertha and did penance at the bank of river Saraswati.

Narada chanted Om Namo Narayanaya : I continuously chanting the sacred mantra: ॐ नमो नारायणाय / ಓಂ ನಮೋ ನಾರಾಯಣಾಯ / ōṁ namō nārāyaṇāya / om namo narayanayaand Para Brahma stotram.

Lord Sri Narayana became pleased : Ultimately, Lord Sri Narayana (Vishnu) became pleased and appeared before me.

Narada wanted Moksha : Lord Sri Hari (Vishnu) asked me of my wish and I express my desire to get a place in Vaikuntha by getting Moksha (Divine Salvation).

World needs Narada : But, Lord Sri Narayana told me that, the world needed me and so this desire of mine could not be fulfilled.

Got name Narada : He blessed me and gave me my name ‘Narada’. I got this name because, I had ‘donated’ water (naar) to my ancestors during the course of performing shraddha rituals.

Narada saw divine form of Vishnu : Although my wish of uniting with the divine form of Sri Hari had remain unfulfilled. But still there was a consolation as I had been fortunate enough to see his divine form (darshan) with my mortal eyes.

Attained Brahma Loka : Thereafter, I devoted my life to the worship of Sri Hari. After my death, I attained to Brahma Loka. I had been adequately rewarded for my devotion toward Lord Sri Hari.

Manifested as Manasputra : Later on, I manifested as one of the ten manasputras of Sri Brahma Deva when he commenced his creation. In this life also, I again got the same name Narada.

Narada became Loka Guru : It was only because of the blessings of Lord Sri Hari, that I came to be regarded as ‘Loka Guru’ by the masses.

So Priyavrata, if you desire of attaining salvation then you should follow my example and devote your life in the name of Lord Sri Hari (Vishnu).”

Prithvi, who was listening to the tales narrated by Lord Sri Varaha Swami with rapt attention – asked him whether it was possible for anybody to see Lord Srimann Narayana (Vishnu) with his/her mortal eyes.

Lord Sri Varaha replied – “Lord Sri Narayana has taken ten incarnations in various forms such as Varaha (boar), Narasimha (half human and half lion),

Matsya (fish), Kachchapa or Kurma (tortoise), Vamana (dwarf), Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha and Kalki.

The last incarnation – Kalki is yet to take place. A man can realize Lord Srimann Narayana by having total devotion in any one of the ten incarnations. Even the deities are incapable of this divine experience – what to say about humans.

Sri Brahma Deva is the manifestation of all the three qualities of Sri Hari and actually:

It is He (Lord Sri Hari / Vishnu) who creates Lord Sri Brahma Deva. Thus, Lord Vishnu is called as Lord Padmanabha.

Here Padmanabha = Padma + Nabha = Lotus flower + Navel. Here Lord Vishnu gives birth to Lord Brahma from his navel.

It is He (Lord Sri Hari) who creates various natural commodities like earth, water, fire, air and sky. It is He (Lord Sri Hari) who creates various abstract qualities like consciousness. He (Lord Sri Hari) is omnipresent and the whole universe is pervaded by him.

Prithvi was anxious to know whether Narada Maharishi’s sermons had any effect on Priyavrata and asked Lord Sri Varaha regarding this.

Lord Sri Varaha replied – Priyavrata was so impressed by Narada Maharishi’s discourses that he relinquished his throne and went to do penance after equally distributing his kingdom among his sons.

Ultimately, he did manage to attain to the abode Vaikuntha of Lord Sri Hari (Vishnu) by the virtue of his total devotion.

PS: This is taken from Varaha Purana.

We should always remember that, we are just a tiny, tinier, tiniest particle on this earth. We don’t know anything and everything. We just think that, we know everything.

But in reality our knowledge is a BIGGGGG ZEROOOOOOO. If we need to know, we need to find a correct Guru and under his guidance we need to learn about Lord Sri Hari (Vishnu).

Only learning about Lord Sri Maha Vishnu, we can get anything and everything according to our yogyata (merits and capabilities). Let’s learn and teach the Great Sanatana Dharma from today and now itself.
