Just before going to “How to avoid going to Hell (Naraka / Narak) | How to not go to Narak (Naraka) (Hell) – Hinduism“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

Maitreya, once asked Maharshi Parashara (Parashar) that “How to avoid going to Yamaloka and Naraka (Narak) or How to not go to Narak (Naraka) after death”.

For this, Maharshi Parashara (Parashar) said to Maitreya, that once Nakula (one of the Five Pandavas) had asked his great grandfather Bhishma the same question.

On this Bhishma had said that, he had a Brahmana (Brahmin) friend called Kalinga and he had learnt the way to avoid (or not to go) going to Yamaloka and Naraka (Narak) by praying the Supreme Bhagavan Lord Sri Vishnu from a Jatismara Rishi.

(Note : Jatismara are the people who can easily remember about their earlier lives. Here Jati – means earlier lives and smara – smaranam or remembering. Thus the meaning of Jatismara is someone who can easily remember about his / her earlier lives).

Jatismara Rishi (a type of rishi who can remember of his earlier lives’ happenings) had explained to Kalinga of the conversation that took place between Lord Sri Yama Deva and his colleague (or minister) Chitragupta.

Lord Sri Yama Deva informed to his Chitragupta that, “No Yamadoota (Yama’s soldiers) should touch the bhakta (devotee) of Bhagavan Lord Sri Vishnu. I am just a follower of what Bhagavan Srimann Narayana (Vishnu).”

“Even Devatas (Demigods) like Lord Sri Indra Deva and all the Demigods are Bhaktas (devotees) and followers of Lord Sri Hari (Vishnu). Lord Sri Brahma Deva and Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Shiva) will always be chanting the naamam (names) of Bhagavan Lord Sri Narayana (Vishnu).”

“Lord Sri Brahma Deva and Lord Sri Rudra Deva (Shiva) will always be praying and they both do the naama-smaranam (chanting of names) of Bhagavan Lord Sri Narayana (Vishnu)”.

Lord Sri Yama Deva continued, “I need to follow the instructions given by Bhagavan Lord Sri Vishnu, without which I cannot even move a darbam (grass)”, that is the shakti (power) of Bhagavan Lord Sri Narayana (Vishnu).

Lord Sri Yama Deva again continued, “whoever chants ‘OM NAMO NARAYANAYA’ or any name of Lord Sri Hari (Vishnu), will be a great bhakta (devotee) of swayam Bhagavan Sri Narayana (Vishnu). So no Yamadoota (Lord Yama’s soldiers) should touch any bhakta (devotee) of Bhagavan Lord Sri Vishnu”.

On this Chitra Gupta asked to Lord Sri Yama Deva, “How can we distinguish between a bhakta (devotee) of Bhagavan Lord Sri Vishnu and others?”

For this Lord Sri Yama Deva replied, “one who always chants the different names of Bhagavan Lord Sri Vishnu, one who always make the naama smaranam of Bhagavan Srimann Narayana (Vishnu), one who follows the path of Dharma,”

“one who’s heart is pure, one who makes Gau (Go) (cow) daanam (donation), one who makes pooja of Lord Sri Hari (Vishnu) daily, one who thinks his both friend and enemy as one & the same, one who is non-violent, one who is not depressed, one who is not overly happy, one who controls his anxiety & doesn’t harm anybody by intention,”

“these are some of the characteristics of followers of Bhagavan Srimann Narayana. Swayam Srimann Narayana (Vishnu) stays in the hearts of his nija Bhakta (real devotee). So don’t dare to touch a real Bhakta (devotee),”

“as Bhagavan Lord Sri Vishnu’s Sudarshana Chakra on the orders of his master can destroy anything and anyone. So be aware of all these things and don’t go near a nija Bhakta (real devotee) of Lord Sri Vishnu).”

The greatness of chanting of Lord Sri Hari’s (Vishnu / Rama / Krishna or any avatars of Lord Sri Vishnu) different names are explained in various granthas (Hindu divine books) in the Sanatana Dharma Shastras (Hindu Texts).

Few of the names of Lord Sri Vishnu (Hari / Narayana / Rama / Krishna) are as given below which will avoid us by going to Yamaloka or Naraka (please remember that Yamaloka is different and Naraka is different):

Sri Krishnaaya Namaha (श्री कृष्णाय नमः) (śrī kr̥ṣṇāya namaḥ) | Sri Vishnuve Namaha (श्री विष्णुवे नमः) (śrī viṣṇuvē namaḥ) | Sri Hariye Namaha (श्री हरिये नमः) (śrī hariyē namaḥ) | Sri Bhagavate Vaasudevaya Namaha (श्री भगवते वासुदेवाय नमः) (śrī bhagavatē vāsudēvāya namaḥ) |

Sri Raamaya Namaha (श्री रामाय नमः) (śrī rāmāya namaḥ) | Sri Vaasudevaaya Namaha (श्री वासुदेवाय नमः) (śrī vāsudēvāya namaḥ) | Sri Aniruddhaaya Namaha (श्री अनिरुद्धाय नमः) (Śrī anirud’dhāya namaḥ) |

Sri Padmanaabhaaya Namaha (श्री पद्मनाभाय नमः) (śrī padmanābhāya namaḥ) | Sri Hrishikeshaya Namaha (श्री हृषीकेशाय नमः) (śrī hr̥ṣīkēśāya namaḥ) | Sri Trivikramaaya Namaha (श्री त्रिविक्रमाय नमः) (śrī trivikramāya namaḥ) |

Sri Madhusudanaaya Namaha (श्री मधुसूदनाय नमः) (śrī madhusūdanāya namaḥ) | Sri Venkateshaaya Namaha (श्री वेन्कटेशाय नमः) (śrī veṅkaṭēśāya namaḥ) | Sri Vitthalaaya Namaha (श्री विठलाय नमः) (śrī viṭhalāya namaḥ) |

Sri Rangaaya Namaha (श्री रन्गाय नमः) (śrī raṅgāya namaḥ) | Sri Badrinaathaaya Namaha (श्री बद्रिनाथाय नमः) (śrī badrināthāya namaḥ) | An many many more…

The above legend is taken from Vishnu Purana.

PS: Even today the only way to get the mukti / moksha (divine liberation) is to do Bhagavan Sriman Narayana (Vishnu) naama smaranam, that is “OM NAMO NARAYANAYA (ॐ नमो नारायणाय) (ಓಂ ನಮೋ ನಾರಾಯಣಾಯ)”

or any of Lord Sri Vishnu’s name is the only way and in fact the best way to avoid Yamaloka (And Naraka / Hell) and, to get directly into Swarga Loka (Heaven) or higher planets and if a person is really lovable and is indeed a real Bhakta (devotee) of Bhagavan Lord Sri Vishnu,

then that person even may get the sthaanam (place) in Vaikuntha, in the abode of Bhagavan Srimann Narayana (Vishnu).

So despite whatever sins you have committed, you can still get to the divine place as long as you chant the names?

Is your past considered along with chanting?

    • This is not as easy as you think. But, once you start chanting the names of Lord Vishnu, you will automatically and completely stop doing any new and fresh sin(s).
In Kali Yuga, chanting Lord Vishnu’s different names is the best way to get Lord Vishnu and Vaikuntha.
      Shubhamastu!
