Just before going to “What are Pitru Devatas and Dwadasha (12) Pitru names (information)“, let us know a brief, basic and very important information.

Meaning of Dwadasha, Pitru and Devatas is as given below:

In Sanskrit Dwadasha means Twelve (12), Pitru means our ancestors (forefathers) (progenitors) and Devatas means Demigods.

Difference between Pitrus and Pitru Devatas is as given below:

Pitrus – Pitrus (English way of pronunciation) or in Sanskrit it is pronounced as Pitarah (पितरः / pitaraḥ) are the one who are our ancestors (forefathers), and who are either living or died.

E.g., Father side – Father, Grandfather (paternal), great-grandfather (paternal), mother, grandmother (paternal), great-grandmother (paternal).

E.g., Mother side – Mother’s father, Mother’s Grandfather (paternal), Mother’s Great-Grandfather (paternal), Mother’s mother, Mother’s Grandfather (maternal), Mother’s Great-Grandmother (maternal).

These above mentioned 12 ancestors are our immediate pitrus (forefathers).

All these above mentioned ancestors (forefathers) are (were) living beings like us (humans).

Pitru Devatas : After they (above mentioned) die, they won’t be having the capability to come to son’s house and accept the Shraddha rituals.

But Lord Sri Vishnu has assigned a group of Devatas (Demigods) who will bring all our dead ancestors (forefathers) to son’s house to accept the Shraddha rituals.

These group of Devatas (Demigods) are known as Pitru Devatas.

There are three main types of Pitru Devatas (Demigods) as given below:
